Setting BFD3 outputs in Sonar X3

Hi,
Would anybody be able to explain the finer details of setting BFD3 outputs in Sonar please? Let me explain where I'm up to...

I load BFD3 up in Sonar as "All synth outputs Stereo" or "Mono" and program a few bars of rhythm. BFD plays through it's stereo master..I get that.
So I assign each of BFD's outputs by right clicking at the bottom of each BFD fader channel to either a mono output or a stereo output (for the OH's and Room mics). All good so far.

Where I can't get it is how this all clicks with Sonar's assigning of all the mono and stereo inputs in the dropdown list. In Sonar's console view, if you click the dropdown arrow next to the Input, and go to BFD, it shows all the inputs 1 Left Mono, 1 Right Mono, 1 Stereo etc for 8 stereo channels, and then 1 to 16 mono channels (or inputs - not sure which.) I'm afraid I don't understand this aspect of Sonar. Any help gratefully appreciated...
Cheers,
Dave

I think you are over thinking this.  You don't need to access the input of the tracks unless you wish to reassign them. For example you might want to have the mono outs first. However, it really is unnecessary to do so. What you may want to do and I do this is for the mono tracks I set them to mono interleave.

But then I may not understand your question.

Thanks John. I guess, what I'm finding difficult to understand is when I see the BFD tracks in the console view, how do I know (short of soloing and listening) which Sonar track corresponds to the particular BFD track. Which Sonar channel is kick direct, which is OH etc. Each channel in Sonar comes up with a name like "BFD3 1 BFD3s04: Stereo". I also seem to get a lot more Sonar channels in the console view than there are drum channels.

    Thanks for your reply

Rename the track strips according to the instrument assignment, there is no way for SONAR to know what assignments have been made in the plug-in. Once completed, select all the tracks and buses related to BFD and save it for future use as a track template.

Yes, it is all the flexibility you get with SONAR and assigning inputs....

    1) After I assign mic groups to OUTPUTS in BFD, I then name the SONAR tracks to meaningful names that match the BFD output channels... let's say you route the OHs in BFD to STEREO 1 and 2... I then assign the STEREO 1and2 as input to a track in SONAR that I would name OHs,  then do each of your output assignments the same way.

For my workflow, I end up with a stereo output for the OHs, Rooms and other ambient mics, MONO outputs for the KICK, SNARE and Hats, and another stereo output for the TOMs.... and I just mix in SONAR at this point to taste.

I hope that helps.  I still am trying to learn how to route stuff in BFD3.... I want separate outputs for the ROOM, OHs and other ambient mics.... I can't seem to get a separate track in BFD3 for each of these yet but I know I will figure it out for the ultimate flexibility.

BFD3 is now my leader for drum VSTi out there.  So much flexibility and so realistic.  You gotta love em.

One reason you get a lot more channels is they are duplicated to some extent. You have a set of stereo channels and a second set of mono channel. To know where things are routed to I listen to the kit. No need to solo just click on a kit piece. It will sound. You can figure out where things by knowing the the stereo channels are first and the mono ones come after.  Set your kick to mono 1 and when that sounds you will see the beginning of the mono tracks.

Also use Scook's advice abut naming.

Hi Scook. I've just followed your suggestion and am coming to terms with the correlation between Sonar and BFD. As I look at all the BFD tracks in Sonars track view, from the first track to the last, Sonar assigns them to (BFD) Masters first, then any Stereo outputs and finally Mono. I think I'm getting it! I'll definitely save it as a template when I've got it the way I want.

Thanks Guys - all a bit to get your head around, but with your help, I've got a better hold on it. Amazing software!
