Setup Problem/Question

Greetings everyone,
Just got done recording several Bach Inventions w/ a marimba sound from my Roland XV-3080 sound module. In case you are bored, it is great fun recording two separate tracks for R and L hand.

Playback sounds great, but the marimba sounds sounds very muted/funky while recording. I am sure there is something wrong in my Midi setup. I am using my integrated sound card while waiting for my new card to arrive. M-Audio USB midi interface.

Controller: Kurzweil PC88 Midi transmit set to Channel 1. Midi Out to sound card. Midi In from sound card back to controller. Midi Through from controller connected to Midi In of Roland XV-3080.

In Sonar, Track Properties as follows:
Input: USB Audio Device-Omni
Output: 1-USB Audio Device
Channel: 2

Thanks in advance.

Your MIDI setup sounds fine to me.

I think you're probably in Patch mode, playing and recording each hand separately via channel 1?

It might be a problem with your audio circuit, or the configuration of the patch, itself. What does the patch sound like when you press the preview button -- Good or bad?

If Bad, it's an audio problem (maybe).

If Good, then your Patch is not playing right -- maybe you have disabled the Effects? Push that Effects On/Off button on the front panel (I have one of these, also). Does that help?

My guess is that while recording, you're hearing both direct monitored signal throught the soundcard from the XV-3080 and the input echoed audio coming back out of SONAR with just enough latency to produce some phase cancellation. You need to figure out how to disable the driect monitoring in the soundcard's mixer. SoundBlaster calls it "What You Hear"; with other mixers, you may need to choose Line In, instead of "Stereo Mix", or terminology to that effect. Some onboard systems are hardwired to always send the input through to the output, as is the Realtek system in my laptop. If this is the case, and you're not monitoring with effects in SONAR, you can just turn off the input echo on the recording audio track and use the soundcard's direct signal.

The M-Audio interface will resolve this for you.

    KWGM,
Thanks for the suggestions. I probably should have been more clear in my original post. When I play back the MIDI information, the sound module sounds normal. The strange sound occurs only during recording.

    Brundlefly,
Thanks for the reply. See my reply to KWGM. I was not clear enough in my OP that I was recording MIDI Info, not audio.
