Seven random quotes... (and some GK Chesterson quotes)
1: "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." Martin Mull 2: " Age considers; youth ventures." Rabindranth Tagore 3: "I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it." Robert E. Lee 4: "And I can do the rock clubs if I have to." Luther Allison 5: "A well-instructed people alone can be permanently a free people." James Madison 6: "I got tired of playing other people's songs." Gregg Allman 7: "I read somewhere that 77 per cent of all the mentally ill live in poverty. Actually, I'm more intrigued by the 23 per cent who are apparently doing quite well for themselves." Jerry Garcia G K Chesterson: (sorry, no way to only quote him seven times).... A room without books is like a body without a soul. All slang is metaphor, and all metaphor is poetry. Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried. Democracy means government by the uneducated, while aristocracy means government by the badly educated. I've searched all the parks in all the cities and found no statues of committees. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly. It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it. Man seems to be capable of great virtues but not of small virtues; capable of defying his torturer but not of keeping his temper. Marriage is an adventure, like going to war. Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist. Never invoke the gods unless you really want them to appear. It annoys them very much. One sees great things from the valley; only small things from the peak. People generally quarrel because they cannot argue. Science in the modern world has many uses; its chief use, however, is to provide long words to cover the errors of the rich. The Bible tells us to love our neighbors, and also to love our enemies; probably because generally they are the same people. The poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese. The purpose of Compulsory Education is to deprive the common people of their commonsense. The trouble with always trying to preserve the health of the body is that it is so difficult to do without destroying the health of the mind. There is a road from the eye to heart that does not go through the intellect. Without education we are in a horrible and deadly danger of taking educated people seriously. Julien .

I'm a huge fan of G K Chesterton and his writings....thanks Julien for sharing. Some more from G K 1) "Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car." 2) "If there were no God, there would be no atheists." 3) "There are those who hate Christianity and call their hatred an all-embracing love for all religions." 4) "We fear men so much, because we fear God so little. One fear cures another. When man's terror scares you, turn your thoughts to the wrath of God." 5) "Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable." 6) "These are the days when the Christian is expected to praise every creed except his own." 7) "When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing, they then become capable of believing in anything."

My own tastes lean more toward Steven Wright and Larry the Cable Guy, but here are some music-related quotes I like. "The room is the most important stop on the organ" - J.S. Bach, ahead of his time on the subject of acoustics "Room tuning is 70% speaker positioning, 25% acoustical control devices, and 5% EQ." - Contemporary acoustician Bob Hodas "There are two kinds of fools. One says-this is old and therefore good. The other says-this is new and therefore better." - Bob Katz, from the bible of mastering, Mastering Audio "Going back and forth between digital and analog is like pouring sand from one glass to another. The glass looks full, but why do I feel sand on the floor?" - Bruce A. Miller "Art is never finished, only abandoned" Leonardo Da Vinci, who could have been talking about my SONAR projects "If it's so critical about when and how to dither, how come no one can figure it out for themselves? People are always asking questions about it. If there's a big sonic difference between doing it right and doing it wrong, then how come people (engineers) can't even tell whether they're doing it right or wrong?" - Scott Massey "Our first album was recorded in a day, and our second album took even longer!" - George Harrison "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture" - Frank Zappa (repeated by Martin Mull) "Overproduction means throwing away what's right in a herculean effort to achieve a recording having nothing wrong." - Bob Olhsson "Life is a compromise. Fortunately, it's also a cereal." - Jessie Sammler

The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance. Robert R. Coveyou, Oak Ridge National Laboratory The United States is a nation of laws: badly written and randomly enforced. Frank Zappa (1940 - 1993) That which is static and repetitive is boring. That which is dynamic and random is confusing. In between lies art. John A. Locke Without the capacity to provide its own information, the mind drifts into randomness. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, 1990

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
