Several upgrades to make, any opinions on order?

Hello all,

3 kids in the last 39 months has put a major damper on my music-making efforts, but I'm trying to dip my toes back in the water.  I'm currently running Sonar X3 on a Sweetwater Creation Station 250, running Windows 7 Home Premium (Service pack 1) with 4 GB of RAM.  I'd like to upgrade to Windows 10 before the July 29 deadline to upgrade for free, add a couple of 8 GB chips into the 2 free memory slots on my machine to get me up to 20 GB, and of course upgrade to Sonar Platinum Lifetime (or whatever it's called) before July 31.  Is there any particular order I should do this in?  I figure the memory I could add at any time, but I wonder if it would be better to upgrade Windows before installing a new version of Sonar.  Or maybe it's vice-versa.  I should note that automatic Windows updates have been turned off since I got the computer in December 2013, so the machine has NEVER been updated (which I believe is why I don't currently see the option to upgrade to Windows 10 in the lower right corner of the desktop).  Any guidance any of you could give would be much appreciated.  I'm sure this is a common refrain, but I'm a "music guy" and not much of a "computer guy", so I really want to try to avoid any computer related issues before I begin this process.  Thanks in advance!

               Joel

Adding RAM can be done at any time. I'd do that first, just because you know you're starting with a stable system. Any weirdness that crops up will likely be due to a badly-seated or defective memory module. If you use a lot of sampled instruments, you can get the benefit of more RAM right away while you're working up the courage to proceed to the next step.

Windows 10 is going to expect your W7 to be up-to-date, so next I'd enable Automatic Updates and give it overnight to catch up with 3 years' worth of updates. After that, you should see the W10 update popup. All of this should be painless. Really.

I'd do the SONAR upgrade last. You can leave X3 installed, as the two versions will happily coexist. If you have any issues with Platinum, you won't be dead in the water while you make the transition.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Check to see what version of Windows 7 is on your machine. If you have only 4 GB of ram it is possible that you have only the 32 bit version of Win 7 installed. If you do the inplace upgrade, in that case, it is going to give you a free 32 bit version that will not be able to see most of your new ram. If you have the 32 bit installed, you would need to do a clean installation of the 64 bit version by downloading the free 64 bit Windows 10 iso in order to get the 64 bit version you will need. You can do the clean installation if you have a product key for your Win 7 version very simply, by just entering the Win 7 product key when first prompted during installation from the iso. The product key you use will determine whether you get a pro or home upgrade, but the iso you download determines the 32 vs 64 bit issue.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  I actually do have Windows 7 64 bit, but for some reason Sweetwater only installed 4 GB of memory even though it'll hold up to 32.  Looks like an overnight Windows Update-fest is in my future...

Im one of the sonar users who actually had a few issues with 10, and went back to 7 intentionally.

    I would suggest that you:

Determine the actual age of the hard drives installed in the current computer, as the older the drives are, the more exposure there potentially is for a hard drive failure to occur.

Determine the manufacturer's warranties on each of the hard drives - please note that warranty length can and does differ between manufacturers, as well as for different specific models of drive for any given drive manufacturer.  Please also note that Sweetwater may have its own warranty that would apply to the current computer, and that may well (and almost certainly will) differ from the warranties on individual components within that computer.  It would be good to know what those warranty terms are.

Evaluate your data backup process: Do you have one? It is being followed and reviewed? Does it adequately backup ALL personal data deemed required to be retained?  Is the age of any existing external drive used to hold backed up data to a point where the BACKUP drive is at risk of failing? (rendering it potentially useless for recovery purposes).

Evaluate the level of technology for the current computer, to see if it makes sense to put more money in, versus buying or building a brand new computer to get more current technological advantages.  IF the current computer has a lower end CPU or slower memory, it might be worth considering buying or building a new computer instead of shoring up one that may not last or might be annoyingly slow for the more demanding needs of more complex versions of Sonar.  It might well be worth $50-$80 for additional memory if the rest of the computer is likely to meet the needs for performance and for reliability for the next 2-3 years, for example.

I am not trying to be any sort of doom and gloom guy - I am only suggesting you factor the above into your decision making process, so that you maximize the bang for the buck, but that you also do that wisely.

I also concur with the other posts about making sure Windows maintenance is all up to date, and I would urge you to get any hardware issues/updates/upgrades resolved prior to jumping into Windows 10.  You are also going to need to make sure that whatever audio interface you are currently using will be supported in Windows 10, or you might need to factor in holding off on Windows 10 until you are in a spot to where you can pick up a newer audio interface that DOES have drivers for Win 10.

I know how you feel. When Windows 10 actually started being available via Windows update, I was reluctant to try it. When I finally did, I rolled back after a week. I purchased a new computer this year on a deal from Costco and it came with Windows 7. I managed to really screw thing up and need do a clean install, a gave Windows 10 a second chance. Turned it it worked better than Windows 7 did.... but, again, this was a brand new 2016 Dell XPS 8900, i7-6700, etc.

I waited for a while before I installed W10...definitely not an early adopter. That may be why I've been 100% satisfied with it.

You can speed up the process of getting Windows 7 up-to-date by downloading the "Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1" from Microsoft.  This bundles up all the updates up to April 2016 into a single download.
