Share audio driver option gone

In Edit > Preferences there used to be an option to share the audio driver. I no longer see this option and now if I have Sonar open I can not play a file in any other software. I used to be able to. I am now having to close Sonar in order to check a rendered mix/master etc. My audio interface is a Focusrite Safire Pro 40. Where did this setting go?

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Craig and the team go to all the trouble to do up a pretty comprehensive document Tech + Music, detailing all the new features among many other interesting things, and folks don't even read it. Just a rant to kick off my day. But come on folks do you really need to be spoon fed.

Mudgel, I haven't had a chance to look at Tech + Music yet I'm in the middle of working on a project so calm down! It also seems I have to subscribe to yet another e-mag site to download it and I don't have time to do all that right now! I subscribed to one last month.

S.L.I.P, thanks I saw that in prefs and it's checked but doesn't seem to work for me.

You don't need to subscribe. Just follow the link provided, select full screen view by clicking on the icon in bottom right corner. This exposes a download arrow in the top left corner. Click it and in a few seconds you'll have a PDF document that you can save wherever you like.

While the feature has a change of name it works exactly as before. If you want a number of programs to simultaneously use the same driver as Sonar then don't tick the box. If you want to select which individual program gets to make a sound then check the box as this will allow the program with Windows focus o have exclusive access to the driver.

BTW as I said I was having a bit of a rant. You don't owe me an explanation.

You're welcome. It doesn't seem to be working for me either.  I had Sonar opened, and I minimized it, and I started Sound Forge, and it said "Warning. An error occurred while opening an audio device. The device specified is in use."

Not to "hijack" this thread, but when I follow your directions, I don't get a download link in the top left corner.  I only see an "i" in a circle (indicating "information").  When I click that, I get a "bubble" that has information about the Tech+Music issue.  No download link.

All other download links display the login (or register) page (which I don't really want to do).

Yes, the information seems to be incorrect. It looks like you have to register to download it. I registered to download last month's which was on another site. I don't like to register on sites I am never going to use again - chucking my information in databases all over the web isn't great for security, privacy or spam. However, I like to download the e-zines to read at my leisure when I have time. Update: someone posted a link to download it in the ezine thread https://app.box.com/v/tech-plus-music

You can enter a bogus email address and still be able to download the PDF. They're more concerned with you not being a spambot, so as long as you pass captcha, it doesn't matter what email address you use.

If you do register, you can uncheck all the notification boxes under preferences. Bottom line is you can have as much or as little interaction with issuu.com as you want. That's one of the reasons the eZine is posted there, in addition to allowing people who are not aware of its existence to discover it.

This is what I got also (Firefox).  I went ahead and signed up for Issu, but disabled notification.  Craig - why is the Tech + Music being hosted on Issu instead of being hosted on Cakewalk.com?
P.S. Never mind - just saw Alex's explanation. Carry on.

I do not have the current option enabled. Never had the old share option enable either. Never did on any PC using any version of SONAR. The only audio interface enabled on my current Win10 Creator PC is a Presonus 44VSL running an old driver with VSL support.  I have no problem running multiple programs that generate audio at the same time. Probably because only one app uses ASIO (SONAR), all the others use the regular Windows drivers and everything is set to the same sample rate and bit depth.

I know its not much help, but this proves to be true in my case as well (using ASIO for Sonar and WMP for other applications).
which programs are you using ?

OK I think my problem was sample rate. My projects are in higher sample rates than files I was trying to playback outside Sonar. Never mind. Feel free to hijack this thread again now

I don't know... I think something may have changed with the last update.

I tested by playing a media file that was 16/44.1 in Windows Media Player. The project I'm working on was 24/44.1. This is something I do all the time when I'm on the phone or playing a reference track.

Just now, I shut down Windows Media Player. I then shut down Sonar, and Sonar crashed on exit. This is something I've done 1000 x's and never had a crash on exit.

I sent the crash report.

Open up the Sound Settings in the Windows Control panel, go into the device playback properties and set the sample rate to agree with the setting in SONAR.

Restarted Sonar, and it works fine. I shut down, and all is normal.

If I play a video on Chrome (Youtube, Facebook), or use Windows Media Player, Sonar crashes on exit.

Yes, the information seems to be incorrect. It looks like you have to register to download it. I registered to download last month's which was on another site. I don't like to register on sites I am never going to use again - chucking my information in databases all over the web isn't great for security, privacy or spam. When I open the forum link and select full screen, I get a downward pointing arrow to the right of the Information circle and when I click that, the screen opens loading the PDF into the browser. I'm on an IPad (Safari) so I don't know if that makes a difference. Sorry if it doesn't work for you. I'll stop recommending folks do it that way seeing as it doesn't work for everyone.

Last month's Tech + Music was hosted on a different site. Maybe you are already registered to this site so it gives you the download. For everyone else, it requires you to register. Someone posted an alternative download link anyway so all sorted.

I checked and while it worked both last month and this month from my iPad it doesn't work on my PC with either Chrome, Edge or IE.

I don't have a login to the site used last week nor the one used this week. I'm invited to login or register, but as I explained by going to full screen I get a downward pointing arrow which loads the mag into the browser to be downloaded as a pdf.

Anyway seeing as it doesn't seem to work for others I'll stop recommending it as a shortcut to getting the pdf.

Hey Al,

I use a Presouns audiobox usb , everything is set to the same sample rate and bit depth, but if Sonar is open i cannot hear audio from any other source.
Videos wont even play in chrome or Edge.
I have the "suspend audio option" ticked , its so annoying as i have to close Sonar and then open a browser before i can hear any audio from the browser.
This needs some looking into as it is not working as intended (at least for me )

Re: Share audio driver option gone 2017/07/05 17:16:19 (permalink)
No, I take it back. It's stopped sharing the driver again. I just reopened the same 44k project where I was able to playback a mix in windows while Sonar was still running, and now I can't again. There does seem to be an issue. I never had this problem before 2006.05.

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.
