I really like this sound; it's punchy, wide, and well performed.  The drums sound very good with good dynamics.  Just out of curiosity how are they recorded?  The arrangement left left plenty of room for the fine vocals.  Kudos!

    All the best,
    Lynn

Thanks for the kind comments Lynn. Well, I'm the drummer so thanks! I play real drums (a 1982 ludwig set I purchased new!), I use SM57s on snare and small toms and a Sennheiser md21 on my floor tom. For kick I use an old RE20. And for overheads I use AKG C451s. I don't use room mics.

I then use audiosnap to trigger AD2 sounds for each of the close mics, which I blend with the real mics. The overheads are just produced and left in the mix for HiHat and Cymbals. The AD2 kit for that song is from the INDIE AdPak although I've modified the kit sounds quite a bit.

    thanks, gabo

    :) good one guys.

A weird David Bowie does country punk. Me likes.

Mix-wise, my very first thought was that this was mixed by the guitar player. True? I'd push the lead vocal up just a tad, and the bgv's need a bit of a boost as well, to my ears.

However, as the song progressed, I think the lead vocal got to shine more. The first half of the song could use a lowering of the power chord guitar which would leave some space for the lead voc.

Overall, vocal performances excellent, guitar work excellent, drum work excellent, and mix clarity excellent.

    cheers,
    -Tom

Wow, Tom beat me to it :)

Really nice mix, drums are right up front, so I differ with Tom's opinion on who mixed this. Great song!

Works well, I am hearing the Bowie inflection in the vocal too, thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. We're a democratic band, so we all have a hand in mixing it! So you're all right, the guitar player and the drummer mixed it.

Thanks for a number of comments, based on the input from various people I have tweaked it a bit. Background vocals are now a bit higher, guitar volume tweaked during vocal passages. Nothing major as in my opinion it's very close. Let me know what you guys think with these changes.

    Thanks, gabo

Catchy song!  I didn't hear the first version but this one sounds pretty good to me.   I think Lynn nailed it with the "punchy, wide, and well performed" comment.

So you're all right, the guitar player and the drummer mixed it.

And as usual, the bass player was left out in the cold.... :-D

Thanks for the compliments guys, and gabo's right, we all have a say in the mix, but he has the perfect combination of good ears, computer skills and anal retentiveness...err, attention to detail that makes for a good recording engineer!
