She's on her way! :)

Thanks to my lovely lady.

I initially wanted a white one, but a few things made me change my mind.

1: I'm not sure how the white rubbed finish would have agreed w/ my supernaturally acid sweat.
2: I'm in a wood grain phase - I like finishes that let me see more of the wood grain.
3: Preferably, I wanted to buy from Sweetwater and they didn't have white ones any more.

I had started putting money aside for it by selling a few things I didn't need anymore but time was running and I think this particular model was a 2013 thing. I was seeing the stocks go down, and then the price dropped by $100... Since it was pretty much exactly what I wanted (50's neck, rubbed finish, no pickguard -and the black cover on the pickups means less aesthetic damage) I didn't want to miss the opportunity.

I don't like to order guitars but considering that no local store carried it, I would have had to order anyway. Might as well get it from Sweetwater, who'll put it through their 55 points inspection before sending it my way. :)

    Looks nice!

You and me both, Bill. I have had to fight to hang on to the ones I have. I would probably drop dead if I ever heard her even suggest I buy another.

I guess it helps that she's a musician. But honestly, not an hour goes by w/o me feeling absolutely blessed to have her in my life. I adore that woman - and not because she buys me stuff. She makes life magic.

What kind of pickups does it have?  Are they active pickups?

Passive, the black pickup covers are misleading. But if that prevents me from burning through the finish too quick, all the better.
    It's a 498R and a 490T.

The pickups are AlNiCo II for the neck and the bridge is a hotter pickup maybe a AlNiCo V with a 498T PU while a 490T would be more of a regular PU with a brighter midrange and hotter highs while the neck PU is more like a '57 Classic PU maybe I guess or whatever your opinion leads you to hear according to others while deciding what you hear yourself.

The PU are not ceramic but regular 2-wire PU while if you buy other ones from Gibson store those would be 4-wire PU's.
    Or so they say.

I sure whatever the PU's are there is the amp also to change the tone with those also.
    Who knows until you play!

    Cool.

A good friend of ours told me he had the same configuration on a Les Paul and didn't really like them. Personally, I think I may very well like them just fine.

I had to change the previous post a little because if you read enough and get enough opinions, I think the only way to determine how they sound is with your own set-up!

    Crazy as that sounds!

Neither of my ex's EVER bought me a musical instrument. They would not have known how to go about it secretly (and would have never just asked). The Lovely Lady justs listens to me talk about instruments and then one day says "Do you want that <insert the to die for at the moment desires> for your birthday?".

    :)

Yeah, I'm usually pretty flexible. I've played stock pick ups on Fender starts for the longest time. These days, I don't really like the way my start sounds, but that's not just the pick ups.

The ones on my Epiphones - well, the standard ones ain't bad and are actually useful for some things. The ones on my Traditional Pro I seem to like a bit better - they're designed to sound closer to classic Gibson pick ups. But for some things I revert to the Standard. Yet, if I didn't have the option, I'd make due w/ only one.

I'm thinking the ones on the SG will be at least as good as the ones on my Traditional Pro - maybe a bit tighter. From the reviews I've read, they're actually quite a good match for the guitar.

    Nice. I love SGs.
    And Les Pauls.
    And ES 335s.
    And Stratocasters.
Rumor has it that we'll be getting a big bonus this December. The money I don't have yet is already burning a hole in my pocket.

Did I mention I really like Sweetwater? :)

When you buy a guitar via the web site, they obviously take the picture gallery for that specific S/N you chose offline. What I found out this morning (there was a delay because I'd ordered my guitar at the end of their business day Saturday) is that they e-mail you the pics from that online gallery. :)

Nice little attention and exactly the kind of things which encouraged me to buy from them in the first place, even if I could probably get the instrument a bit earlier ordering form a store that's a bit closer.

I found the Gibson page that was linked interesting...in more ways than one...
I'd really like to see them get 50,000 wraps on a coil.
2-wire and 4-wire leads have nothing to do with the magnets used. FWIW.

Coincidence - on the very day my Vintage Burst shipped, Sweetwater announces that they'll soon receive white ones again. Well you know what? That's actually a good thing I think.

A rubbed white one would probably be rendered "dirty-public-bathroom-wall-white" in no time in my hands, no matter how careful I am and how often I wash my hands...
