She's Divine

Spelling of Divine corrected 3/5/12
-----------------------------------------------

Hello All,

Here's the final on "She's Divine".  Babu did a great job on bass - thank you so much!  I hope you like the upbeat feel.  Let me know your comments.  I mixed this today and restarted many times.  I hope I got it right.

This is exceptional... The guitars, the bass, the drums, the vocals, the sax... Love those assets... I like the lead guitar that's there? But this song cries out for a lead guitarist... There are a few here? The mix is awesome. But with the right lead work, the lead should stand out a bit more. And I would make the lead vox a bit wetter, and add some delay? But I'm well know for liking it too wet... Or is it really? :-) Sometimes? Wetter is better dude :-)

Really enjoyed the song! Don't let my comments give any other impression, it was Yeoman's work...

I just listened again, really a good job here. Who's playing the Hammond? I would mix it up a bit, and maybe a different patch, but it's well played... A well played organ can really make a track shine!

I would "do things..." to your horn section though? But that's personal pref (different musicians see/hear things differently... I can feel those horns brother? And while they are there? They're not "THERE!" It's still really good though :-)

Hi bandontherun19, thanks for the first comment!  I played the lead and all but the bass (thanks Bapu!).  You are absolutely right about the lead guitar.  I am learning and don't mind putting myself out there but it would be great to hear a real guitarist do his/her thing.  I really appreciate your comments.  This was fun throughout.  I have to commute 30 miles each way to work and when I have a new song, I play the heck out of it to get ideas.  Today, after building the mix, I spent about 3 hours and called it done.  Life is good.  Creativity is essential for me.  Thanks for the listen.

EXCELLENT JOB!  I'm listening on cheap computer speakers and she is sounding great. If I had to NIT, I would bring the bass and the backing vocals up just a smidge.  I probably should leave the mix up to others listening on quality speakers. KUDOS GENTS!

Kev, thank you for the listen.  I kept playing with the bass, vocals, and sax and got into one of those things were one of them came up or down and then the guitars and lead vocal changed a bit, etc. so I had to do some comprimising for the overall.  I will look at the  mix again in a week to see if it still holds up.

PGShadow, much thanks.  In a life a long time ago, I found myself selling organs at the Organ Exchange in the Glendale Galleria (California) for commission only, six days a week.  Yikes!  It did help me learn some organ chops and did put a little food on the table for about a year.  Then I got signed to Warner Brother's Music with a song writer's publishing deal.

When I record, I usually play the organ parts really quickly live and then spend a while cleaning it all up in PRV.  I don't think I have received a comment about my organ playing like this in decades and it made me feel good.  Thanks again.

Nice swing to this, with good performances. Mix is nice and clear. That ride cymbal is just a titch too far away from center to me, but that's a minor nit. Nice work Jimmy.

Thanks Randy.  I always put the ride in context to looking at the kit from the audience perspective.  Also, as a studio drummer for many years, the stereo image in my cans was set up to mimic the kit from my perspective.  I got used to recording like that and then mixing from the audience perspective if they could get that close to the drums!  I also tend to like a wider stereo image of drums on recordings than more centered.

Nice, bluesly song with well played performances.  I, too, mix drums from the audience's perspective, as do most engineers.  I thought your lead guitar parts were just right for the song.  Sometimes less IS more.  Nice job.

Great number.  It sounds like the kind of stuff when the Blues was giving birth to soul music.  It has a very clean, minimalistic (is that a word??) sound, with very little clutter -- which to my mind is exactly how this type of music should sound.  The lead guitar work (again to my preference) is perfect -- it doesn't crowd out the song and fits perfectly without breaking the groove of the song.
And who is this Bapu -- he sho' 'nuff does good stuff on the bass  ;>)

Great tune! The mix/production and performances are fantastic. I'm listening on a laptop so I can't really hear much bass but I'm sure Bapu's part is perfect Well done!
