She's Leaving Home-Cover
https://soundcloud.com/aaudiomystiks/shes-leaving-home I thought this might be of interest to some. It's a bit of an experiment I've been working on. I've been trying to replicate the classic Beatles track She's Leaving Home, this includes the strings and varispeed vocals. It's not perfect, but it's a genuine attempt...I had trouble pitching the vocals because of the microphone, but this allowed me to perfect my melodyne technique lol. My assessment is it's about 90% there...a better microphone, would have helped and better strings too...although Notion 4s aren't bad...sometimes my string writing technique let me down slightly. Enjoy :) Ben

Pretty good effort Ben, your vocals are really nice on this. The strings that are placed to the left of the vocal are pretty harsh sounding to my ears, and are swamping your voice. They are quite static too, could maybe use some dynamics and softening down. Other than that, it sounds good.

Thanks lol...you wait till you hear whats coming. I'm working on a cover of George Harrison's I'll Still Love, never heard it...that's because he never finished it...Ringo Did, and George sued him over it. I'm combing George's idea's with Ringo's lol. People who know of the song, think it's one of George's finest composition...and unlike the vocals on She's Leaving Home...the vocals on I'll Still Love haven't been Melodyne...and I know how you like my high lennonesq vocals Yoropal ;). Although I've done some varispeed for the ringoish vocals lol. James, thanks for listening...it's not my best work...think of it as an experiment to test the limits...and I learn't so much, which I'm now applying in I'll Love You...which will be my best work :). Peace Ben

This is really great -- catches the spirit and dynamics of the original, especially the vocals. Nice job. I agree that the strings patch sounds 'wrong' in some parts, maybe about a third of the time. Maybe a quartet patch with reverb instead of a full orchestra? Tough to mess with it because it works most of the time.

i thought was well balanced Ben,vocals were great if a little distant at times but i guess that is the idea. not a Beatles fan so can't compare to the original but it sounded '60s' to me

Thanks, the issue is Notion 4s strings...if you use just the solo violin or Cello etc the strings are really harsh, but if you only use the section violin etc you get a swampy sound very fake, the other issue is my music theory is good...really good but there are simple things that I don't know because I'm self-taught. This is probably part of the issue. The vocals is all down to Varispeed, which I use Reaper for (all my mixing and everything is done in Sonar, it's the only DAW IMO). I really struggled to pitch too...I was using a really cheap 80 dollar Peavy mic, but what is really cool, is we can, with knowledge get very close to a Beatles sound with very inexpensive equipment. This is truly the most important discovery to come out of this experiment, that and all the extra production tricks I've learnt, which I'm now employing or have employed in my George Harrison/Ringo Starr cover of I'll Still Love You...which coincidentally I finished yesterday...about 4 days it took...She's Leaving Home took two months but that's because I had to interpret the score. Whilst, my assessment for She's Leaving Home is about 90% there, I'll Still Love You is about 96% there...I've gone a little too hard in the snare drum compression (I could fix it, but risk pulling apart the mix), and I was out of form guitar wise. Oh and thanks to Backwoods for listening and MGH Anyway Peace Ben

Sounds good, Ben. I don't think your vocals are an issue at all... in fact I think they carry the song. The strings are good but I agree with the comments above that they're masking your vocals to an extent. I'd have to listen to the original to see exactly why though... Having done a Beatles cover not too long ago I completely the desire to do these songs!

First off, you are to be commended for such an ambitious project. As a whole it works well, but it feels like the strings are just swamping the vocals sometimes... most times to my ears.

Thanks guys. Yes it was ambitious, but it was also about learning stuff. Understanding how to recreate Beatle sonic arts techniques is important. They took the proto-creative arts research of the historical avant gardes and help popularize these techniques. We need to do the same IMO, and as The Beatles did, create new ones. The Beatles or their engineers created ADT and Flanging. In fact on my newest cover of When Every Song Is Song, I've used Melyodyne as a doubler effect on guitar. First to fix a few inconsistencies, and to create a thicker tone, and I was surprised at how close to a full 60's guitar tone I got. Of course I used Guitar Rig, EQ and compressed before going into Guitar Rig, but still...a lot of guitar was double and even triple tracked in the 70s, and by blending a slighty imperfect guitar line with a 'fixed' one...you get closer to the idea of what was being done in regards to double tracking guitar in the 70s. Peace Ben

I must admit much to my embarrassment that the song name did not ring any bells but the second you started singing(with a pleasant voice) I recognized it. You did a great job imo here too. Mix was pleasant in my ears.

I love the vocal! Sounds like the original. I agree that the strings/brass/accordion patch seems a bit loud and harsh, but otherwise very good!!!

Hi, Ben, Fantastic job on this tasty remake of a deep Beatles classic! Excellent work on the vocals, and the authentic vintage sounding mix really captures the spirit and feel of the original. I haven't heard the original in many years, but this immediately spurred some good memories of listening to the Sgt. Pepper's album on my older sister's little green "suitcase" type record player when I was around 11 or 12 years old, so thanks for that! Dynamite job, Ben, have a good one, my friend! Bob
