Shipping...
...charges have been an issue for me since I started building guitars. I did place orders for stuff before that. The problem is not one place has everything so I wind up with multiple orders and all with crazy charges. The last one was just a few days ago and a great example of what has me upset about the whole mess.... I won't say where because it doesn't feel right picking on just one..but they had some pickup rings that were @12 dollars for a set. I needed two sets. The shipping charges for 4 plastic pickup rings that cost @25 dollars, weigh nothing and are small was $15.00 and change !! I wrote them and told them that we both took a loss. Haven't heard from them...they don't care. Now that's the American way. $250.00 to ship a guitar and custom case 1000 miles. Both arrive on a Friday. The recipient gets the guitar but no custom case....it's been on the delivery truck for 4 days with each day having scheduled for delivery by end of day. Is there anything that is working right or working at all in good 'ol USA?

Well that's something. Anything else? Oh...thought I'd add... Cake support did get with me about the bug report question(s). I was given a link to a list of things to do on a procedure that was labeled no longer valid which directed me to find a file that wasn't there. So simply put....I would spend countless hours helping them get something that may or may not be of any use to anybody. Everything is working just has intended is my thought.

I'm trying to figure out how to get UPS to bring me my groceries. It'd cheaper than driving in to town... if I can just find someone to put them in a box for me. :-) Last week when Randy stopped by to drop off my microphone we spent some time talking about what a crazy job it is taking packages to strangers all day long. Randy got to pet GoGo when he settled down and we talked about dogs a bit. I think USA is still working pretty good. best, mike

If so, I think you're undependable and nuts.

Remember spacey, shipping (in today's parlance) actually means "shipping and handling". Shipping may be $4.37 for those $25 2oz. parts but the other $10.63 is for the shipping clerks time and the packaging ($0.63).

I haven't forgotten Bapu. They just don't care because they know there are plenty of idiots that will pay them that. They also know of one that isn't and that thinks they are the idiots. What they don't know is that I can build the rings and they are the ones that inspired me to do so. Mine won't be plastic either.

Most of the time when I pay for shipping, stuff is delivered on a truck. I paid for a ship, though. It's a bit of a letdown. I Am not working right today...

For Canadians shipping is an even bigger hassle. UPS is horrible and stacks on the charges. All my suppliers of parts have been narrowed to those that use the USPS. I like the post office in the US and Canada and do what I can to support them. If you think about it, the post office is a luxury we all take for granted because most people do everything with email. I would be in trouble if I had to pay UPS or Fedex to bring my transformers from Roswell NM, to Hamilton ON.

John I think the USPS is great too. BUT... I have to pay for a post office box. It's not much but still a yearly fee and I have to travel to the postal office to send or retrieve my mail. Now the strange thing about it is that there are folks living down the road and miles away that can stick a box by the road and the folks at the post office will get in vehicles and travel all the way to their homes and deliver or pickup their mail for free! Now that seems backwards to me but then again....I'm not a government employee.

I hate Phed-Ecks. I used to intentionally order something overnight, knowing that Phed-Ecks would never deliver it on time, then call the place I ordered it from and get a refund for the shipping. It was still faster than if I had ordered it regular delivery, but if it didn't show up by the time they guaranteed, that's not my problem. I'd pay for Next Day shipping by 5PM and I would never get it the next day. 3 days ... maybe. 12 days if I had stuff shipped regular. I hate Phed-Ecks. I think I already said that.

My USPS person is a contractor with a fourth hand automobile with left hand drive driving from the right. I find important mail addressed to me in the road side swale with regularity. I figure its different for everyone every where and there are no consistencies.

mike_mccue My USPS person is a contractor with a fourth hand automobile with left hand drive driving from the right. I find important mail addressed to me in the road side swale with regularity. I figure its different for everyone every where and there are no consistencies. My USPS person left a typed letter in my mailbox the other day (which is illegal BTW). It said something to the effect that my garbage cans were too close to the mail box and I had to move them to the other side of the road when I set them out on Fridays for garbage day. So ... I promptly threw the letter in the fireplace and left my garbage cans there all week. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if I wouldn't get my neighbors mail all the time. Plus I get mail all the time addressed to the people that lived here before we did. I contacted them and they said they had their mail forwarded months ago and didn't know why I kept getting it. These USPS people are all but out of a job. You'd think they'd **** a little less and maybe try to make people like them a little more before it's really too late. And it's not like they have the greatest reputation in the world either. I mean, there's a reason the phrase, "Going Postal" is a household saying now.

Well I'm probably all wet but let me just share my thoughts... I mailed two packages to go 1,000 miles for $250.00 The cubic ft. of both was less than 8 cu.ft. I don't know the size of a trailor but I'll say it's 8'wide x 8' high x 40' or 2,560 cu.ft. So 160 packages like mine could be sent....just give me that... Which comes out to $40,000.00 that the haul is making. For a trucker that's a 14-16 hour drive. I'm in the wrong business. If they can get us to pay that...and they can...then our packages should at least arrive with a dozen roses, a thank you we love you card, a free set of steak knives, a free subscription to a magazine of our choice, and no damage to the item delivered......oh...and a free case of smoked salmon variety pack from Alaska. INSTEAD... I get a tracking number that indicates my package has been traveling around on the deliver truck in the town for 4 days and each with the statement that it would be delivered by end of day!! I can't wait to hear the end of this story....if there is one. LOL

Shipping may sometimes represent "shipping and handling," but in many cases it just represents a misleading name for "markup." Many catalogs price "shipping" by a chart that is calculated from the quoted price. So a shipment totaling $50.00--$100.00 has a shipping charge of $8.95 for example regardless of what items are included in that order. Usually there is an additional special charge for "heavy or bulky items," which actually cost more to ship. Clearly such a system has no relation to the actual costs of either shipping or warehouse/packing costs for the particular items. That markup averaged across hundreds of orders may help offset those costs, but some of it may just go to profit. By quoting a low price and tacking on "shipping," the seller has a way to mislead the buyer into paying more to purchase from him, than from a competitor who charges true shipping costs.

Makes me wonder how companies like Thomann in Germany manage to survive. I ordered a guitar from them a while back - shipping was free and it was here within 3 days And before anyone says "it's included in the price" - I paid the same price as was being quoted by several other UK based companies who DID add shipping to the cost.

I have bought a few things off Thomann because they have been cheaper than any UK retailer even when shipping is taken into account. The last order, a couple of microphones was considerably cheaper and arrived very quickly. German VAT is 19% and UK is 20%, hardly enough to account for the differences.
