That's pretty melancholy... I like it!
Sounds like the strings do need a bit of CC11 work to smooth out the transitions between notes (you did say it was EW, yes?) but the composition is great and the choice of instruments it great.
Possibly it sounds a bit dry and could do with a bit more reverb but I'm listening on laptop speakers so perhaps not...

Terry - Thanks for the listen. I put alot of work into the midi controllers to try and make this smooth. EWSO CC11 volume and with Hollywood Strings I used CC1 Mod Wheel for the volume. I also mixed and matched some samples for several notes so I can get an 'attack' sample with a smooth sustain and legatto. I am always trying to improve and appreciate your feedback. I will revisit and see where I can imrove the flow of things.
I did keep it slightly on the dry side. I'm wondering if I mix in more of the surround mic instead of mid and close mics if that would fatten it up more without clouding things with more verb. Thanks again for the listen and thoughts.

I like the way that wav looks (i.e., it doesn't look like a condem...) I try to keep mine jagged too. Yeah this put the Mellon in melancholy. But music should convey emotion (IMO) So bravo!

Great job, Mike. I really enjoyed the melancholy nature of this tune. Very effective and to the point. I think I need to take some antidepressants now...

Tony - Thanks for the listen, I'm glad you liked it. I am open for the 'tweaking' suggestions. My latest mix uses a bit more surround mics on the woodwinds and more verb on the piano. I havent updated that mix to this thread yet....maybe I should do that

I love stuff like this and this is great. It would fit in to a movie or TV drama really well. If I were to say anything about the mix I thought the piano could sound a little better, perhaps the reverb you mentioned will help. I'm no expert so can't quite put my finger on it, but it doesn't sound quite 'right' to my ears. I don't mean bad though, just not quite right and that's being hypercritical. If it's any consolation I always think the same of my piano sound so perhaps it's just my cloth ears.

FBB - Thank you, after considering your post and reviewing the piece, I am betting its a matter of velocity and timing with the piano. All the notes in the chords are hit exactly on the beat and with the same velocity. I didnt fiddle with it much because it was supposed to be in the background but since it is noticed I will go play with it.
Janet - Thank you. ..and also thanks for not noticing my skill-less midi piano lol. Someday I will actually practice and play my own chords instead of typing them in :)

Nice. U heard a "bad" piano note at like :33. I have the feeling it was intentional though. It just sort of stuck out to me. Nice piece.

Tmidi - Thanks for the listen and compliment. I think the note you heard was a D over the A. it then resolves to the C# for a 4/3 suspension on the A chord.
The music was written for a sad scene I had for a project, the breaks are related to that scene and so were the suspension chords to build up the suspense or drama. I realized it might not make complete sense without the video but it mostly stands on it's own. It's unfortunate I can't show the video because I think it was my best work yet. Anyhow, thanks for the listen, I've been working on the piano velocities a bit hopefully fixing the fake soundingness.

I wasn't worried about the piano at all. But now I see you are, working on the velocities, etc. Would you like me to play it for you? If you send me the midi track and all the info (bpm, etc.), I don't imagine it would be too hard to play it. Then the velocities would sound natural (I hope!). I won't be home for another week, though, so that won't work if your'e in a hurry. Just an idea.

Got your email...and as I mentioned there, I should be able to see the midi file as sheet music. :) But give me a week at least, as I don't get home till Sunday and I imagine there will be a few things to catch up on there. :( Although I'm itching to record again!!! :)
