Shots in her neck...

My wife suffers from migraines frequently.  not only migraines, but severe chronic pain in her neck and head so much that she rarely does much of anything any more except go to work, come home and lay on the couch or go to bed.  it's very frustrating for her and for me to see her suffer like this and I'm helpless to do anything for her.

This Thursday she goes to have an outpatient procedure where they will put steroids directly into her neck.  I don't know a lot about the procedure except that she said they will put a very long needle in and run it up into her neck along the spine and then there's also something about a 2nd needle, but I'm not sure exactly what it's for.

all I know is that I pray that this will help her to have some relief.  the tests show that she has cracked and misaligned discs causing swelling in her neck which puts stress on the muscles of her neck which causes the pain and stiffness.  and these steroid procedures are supposed to relieve that pressure.

    I'm a migraine suffer myself.

So was my ex-wife. She once had the "up the nose" steroid procedure (no jokes, I'm serious).

Your wife's procedure sound like an update to that one.

I wish (for all of us sufferers) they would find the permanent cure for migraines.

that doesn't sound fun either (steroid up the nose).

I too wish they could find a permanent cure.  it seems, however, from what I've learned, that there are so many different "types" of migraines and they're triggered by so many differen things.  too many variables.

I've had that done several times for degenerative disk etc in my cervical spine (lower neck). The procedure wasn't bad but it gave me three days of relief in the middle of several weeks of rash. It seems if you have any eczema in your body, even dormant, the steroids have such a sharp dropoff that it triggers the eczema into full bloom. The same thing happened to my dermatologist of I may have never figured it out. It was like poison ivy that moved from day to day but was especially bad on my elbows. So if she gets a rash in about a week tell her it will go away in a few weeks. Really hot water helps for temporary reief. I hope she doesn't get it. I hope she just gets relief... I've also suffered from classic migraines since I was a teenager but I finally figured out that they were triggered, in me, by eating something with MSG in it. I stay away from MSG, I don't get migraines.

I am sure you know by now but ... it is always something in this world. I think whoever made up the term "golden years" must have been young laff.

thanks Julien, good to know.  she's never had any skin problems that I'm aware of, but I'll know if that comes up.

you're not the first person I've talked to who said MSG is a trigger, but that's not her problem, we don't do MSG anyway.

I think you might want to spell check your post there Julien!  LOL!

And I as well used to suffer from migraines until I found that they were actually triggered by certain things (like food combinations or too much of some types of foods) so I've gotten a pretty good handle on them.

Beagle - my wife also has had treatment for degenerative cervical discs C6 C7 in her neck the similar to what jbow described above, she had the same procedure you are describing for a few years prior to finally having to have her neck operated on once the discs became dangerously faulty.  She had surgery where two discs were replaced with cadaver bone and has been pretty good since.  She, like your wife, suffered from really bad migraines, numbness in her arms and fingers, and constant neck pain.  I do hope your wife finds some relief as I know the pain my wife went through and would not wish it upon my worst enemies.

My thoughts  are with you and your wife as you go though this.

I was a lifelong migraine sufferer from about the age of 8 or 9.  I say was because about 10 years ago my blood pressure shot up and it took (takes) three different medications to keep it in check.  After being on these meds for just a few weeks I noticed I hadn't had any migraines.  And I have not had another since.  Zero.  From having at least one a week or more to nada.  I hate taking so much medication for my blood pressure as it can have it's own set of side effects and such.  But I'd never go back to the migraines.  I know this is probably something your doctors have already "weeded out" as a treatment...but if not...you sufferers  might check it out.  Maybe ask your Doc about it.

Hope your wife gets some relief Reese, ol pal.

craig - I noticed, but wasn't going to draw attention to it!

she's tried food journals, migraine meds, homeopathic solutions, heat, cold, muscle relaxers...all kinds of things and nothing seems to help.

this doc has been the first to really find problems in her neck that others didn't see.

she was in a rear end collision about 15 years ago and we think that may have been the beginning of the decline of her health.  just a couple of years ago she built a new set of flower beds and a sidewalk in the front yard, but the last 2 years she's not even really been outside any to work in the yard.

Jind - I hope it doesn't come to surgery, but I'm glad that worked for your wife.  and if that's what it takes to get her going again, I'll be Ok with it, just would prefer a less invasive solution.

Sorry to hear about this, Reece.

Steroid shots also tend to make a friend of mine really tired. He needs the shots in his lower back. Seems to do the trick for a few days then it just drops off. When it drops off he ends up with a flare up of psoriasis....

I really wish that there was a better way to treat that type of migraine/neck/head pain....

Reece, so sorry to hear about your wife's suffering (and that's what it is)

Chronic pain is exhausting and that precisely what your good lady appears to have. If this is her first serious treatment then it has to be worth trying. Reason being that you will have a reaction / symptom delta (change) to make comparison with. This would then be the point to take her ongoing treatment  into her own control, and getting the medical profession to respond to her input, and not the other way round.

A prayer from me for your lady tonight. Hope it turns out well.

Thanks Barry and Garry (HA! that's cool!)

Barry - you're not the first to say that it tapers off after a few days, I certainly hope it does better than that, but I understand it's a good possibility.

Garry - thanks!  they've really not been listening to her at all until recently.  we finally got referred to a specialist in Dallas (an hour's drive for us, but it's worth it!) who is listening to her feedback.  she keeps a daily journal of her pain and when we gave it to him the first time he was surprised at how chronic her pain really is.  she RARELY has days, even hours that she's not in pain, it's just a matter of how MUCH pain she's in at any given time.

thanks for the prayers and thoughts everyone!  I'm hoping this will at least be a start to recovery for her.

It was something we knew going in, that by seeing a neurosurgeon for her problem it would probably require come to that.  Whats that saying - surgeons like to cut?  But in her case it was that or face possible loss of mobility.  I hope this provides your wife some relief, chronic pain is never a good thing.

    Hi Beagle,
I hope the results are good and I'm wishing you the best.

I read that you all did a food journal and stuff.

I wonder, have you ever considered Nitrites as a source of the problem?

Personally, in my personal experience, both MSG and food with Nitrites give me splitting head aches within an hour of eating.

I encounter the Nitrites at bad salad bars where it is often used as Lettuce "whitener" in a spray on form.

     Yuck. Instant headache.

Nitrites are in a lot of commercial food... you may want to look into the possibility.

     best regards,
    mike

    Hi Mike,
yes, we looked at nitrites as well.  and caffiene and nicotine (not that she smoked) and a dozen other possible food / substance triggers and could not determine anything which caused it or even combinations.  once you start trying to look at combinations it gets difficult fast, tho, especially if you're trying to consider more than 2 at a time.

thanks for the tips, tho.  we're always looking for something that might be causing it.  she even started taking allergy meds even tho there were no real allergy symptoms per se.  don't know.  nothing's worked so far.

Wow, Reece.  I really feel for both of you... Both living with chronic pain, and living with the one living with chronic pain.  It tears your heart out to watch.

My MIL has had a series of these treatments... Sometimes they work, and work wonderfully... For her, it recurs, and not every shot does the trick.  But when It does work, it's SO MUCH BETTER.

Will be thinking of you two.

On the migraine front I used to be a bad sufferer from my early teens onwards but attacks started to abate from my 40's onward, although I still get the pre-warnings of an attack, where I'll normally drink plenty of fluid and take some rest, it hasn't developed into a full on attack since then.

My Mother-Out-Law who is 83 and a long-term bad sufferer uses this for the headache phase and is the most effective treatment that she specifically has used to date.

Rizatriptan was launched in 1998 and was designed as a very small molecule, allowing rapid absorption and quick access to the target areas. It was also designed to have little stimulation of other 5-HT receptors, particularly 5-HT1A. This may be of some benefit in the early phase of migraine headache treatment, as there may be less nausea caused by 5-HT1A stimulation. Tablets are available in 5mg and 10mg and there is a 10mg melt-on-the-tongue wafer version (Maxalt Melt). With the wafers, the patient merely places the wafer on the tongue and it dissolves in the saliva within a few seconds. The solution is then swallowed and absorbed from the stomach. It appears to be well tolerated and rarely causes any taste disturbance. The most commonly reported advantage of Maxalt Melt is that the drug is convenient to take; the patient can take the migraine headache treatment earlier in the attack because no glass of water is required. This gives the wafer formulation a better chance of success because the hurdle, in terms of severity, is lower early in the migraine attack.

Of course I wouldn't be recommending specific medications for someone elses particular conditions myself, I'm just reporting on the fact that it is effective in this case.  She uses the Maxalt Melt version which brings rapid relief when used as needed and may work, after a serious consultation with her Doctor, as an alternative to steroid injections.

I sure feel for those that suffer migraines.

My wife has them and has since I've known her. Others in her
immediate family do too. I wouldn't say it's often for her but
will say it's to often...they seem horrible.

I have seldom had a headache and those that I have seem to be
caused by my stomach- upset or hungry. Nothing that I would
    compare to a migraine.
