Should I Join a Band?

Last night I went and jammed with a local band. They want me to join them, and need an answer soon because gigs are booked. I don't know whether to do it or not and am seeking the crowd's opinion.

It's an oldies band with a very good (female) lead singer at the center. I had a good time jamming with them. But I have reservations about the singer.

I broke the ice by asking if there were any Trump supporters in the band, because if there was it'd be unlikely we'd have any common ground. I expected it to get a laugh. After all, Trump supporters in Seattle? And musicians? Ridiculous. But what I got from the singer was an icy stare and a stern lecture about discussing politics.

What say you all; should I join this band?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I have some very good friends that I don't discuss politics with. Since you seem interested and you're asking , I say go for it!!! What's the worst that can happen?

Don't discuss politics (besides, Trump isn't a musician).......do what you do best, join the band, and give the world Seattle some good music.......simple.

Politics aside, I would be more concerned with how they approach their gigs, practices, etc. If you think you're compatible music-wise, go for it. Good luck!

Hi,

I say ... yeah ... and show them what a man can do!

As for politics, do ask and make sure that ... these discussions are not allowed unless you're all so drunk that no one can remember anything the next hour or morning!

After that ... it's music time, and not Trump time!

I don't get it ... so the Trump'ites don't want to do ZZ Top and you can and do? Or equivalent? What kind of joke is that?

On the grounds that I know nothing whatsoever about whether you should join this band or not...

No, she sounds like a right humourless b1tch tbph.  No humour == no thanks!

I agree that politics are irrelevant. I would join Ted Nugent's band in a minute.

Humor, however, or rather the lack of it, is a serious matter and potential deal-killer.

Marx (the funnier one with the bigger mustache) is often quoted as as saying "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." That is possibly a profound distillation of the social baggage carried by any group. If the band thing is primarily a social reward for you, then over time, like any relationship, the truth of the other's feelings will probably be revealed. In that case an early warning could save you some grief if other factors do not overcome your litmus test. If it is a musical collaboration, then the no politics rule sounds like a very practical way of avoiding irrelevant rancor. In fact I think that has even been tried in the Coffee House to limited success.

The Worship Leader at our Church had been asking me for over a year (when we joined) to play Bass in his worship band.  I finally gave in and joined last May.  I play in a rotation about every 3 weeks.  Bit, it was one of the best things I have done in the last 10 years.  It is really rewarding to get up there and play live again.  It helps that it is a low pressure environment, though it was extremely high pressure for me for several weeks, until I kind of got back into the swing of things.

I would go for it.  Who knows, maybe this lead singer will turn out to be one of your best friends, despite any differences.   Shoot...I even have some friends that are going to vote Democratic.

Hey Bit - if you enjoy the level of musicianship and the playlist, I think it's worth considering.
It's always nice to connect to the other players on some level, but not a deal breaker, as long as
they are  decent human beings.
To me, the bigger issue is whether or not we all share similar expectations for the band.  Examples:  number of gigs per week or month,  regular and productive practices, travel arrangements,  commitment level, etc.

I really enjoy playing live music with talented musicians.  It makes me better and it's fun.
I hope it works out for you.
Let us know how it goes.

PS - I never discuss religion or politics with casual friends, just no upside to it for me.

A ton of other things are more important than politics. Type of music, type of gigs, number of gigs, travel, help moving equipment, setting the stage/lights/sound system.
Payment expectations for new "common" equipment. Almost forgot: What you get paid. etc.etc.etc.....

Unless you sign a contract, you can always quit if things get too bad.

Also, I would give the singer a chance...Maybe she truly does not like the notion of members discussing politics because of any discord it might cause...not her own political leanings. I fully understand that type of thinking.

When I think back to my band days, it occurs to me we never got too heavy with our discussions. We were pretty diverse in many ways so in retrospect that was probably a good thing.

We were to busy having a blast anyway.

Hello Bit, I wish I could help you with that one.  I have never been in a band.  I tried to join them, but never was picked.  I tried to start them, but nobody would join.

I guess at this point If I were in your shoes I would ask myself

1. Why?
2. What I expected to get out of it?
3.  What is my exit strategy?

Nothing worse than a good idea gone bad.

Dave ,

WHAT ?   You actually play an instrument ?

sorry i couldn't resist......We all know you are multi talented
Hey can you help me with my math homework now that we got that out of the way

What instrument did you play when you jammed with the band ? Key's ? Guitar ? Bass ?
FWIW , that would play into it for me ...schlepping a guitar or two , an amp and a pedal board is pretty easy ...
Having to lug around a bunch of hardware Keyboards may be another story ....

Moving man logistics aside ,
I hope the Music Scene up there is better that what is down here in the lower part of the State ....
I was playing out 3 or 4 times a week down here , that part I dug ...for some reason people thought I would work for free or peanuts ...
Eventually a couple of the band members GF's told me what the band was really getting paid .
Since the band members lied to me and tried to pocket an extra 30 or 40 apiece per gig over what they were giving me for each gig  I was in the wind ...the money was always short ...once in a long while OK ..not every time .
all they had to do was pocket 5 or 10 less apiece and it would have been Even Stephen

I do miss playing out . I think if you are at a point in your life where you can enjoy some excitement and fun it maybe a good idea for you to play out again w the band that you jammed with ...they have gigs , and they wanted you to join up w them .

I'm not really big on working w female singers unless they are as stable as the rock of Gibraltar ...
way too many stories I choose not to get into ...
my other RUB is ....

Alright fellas , with out using Google

Who's the guitar player in the live bands of these Gals ?  Lady Gaga
                                                                                 Madonna
                                                                                 Christina Aguilera
                                                                                 Adele
                                                                                 Beyonce
I sure as hell don't know , it may just be the nature of having a female front person .... Yet ,somehow I don't think so

PS , that may be perfectly OK if your not looking to blow your cover in The Witness Protection Program ...

I'm here to tell you that Anonymity Suck's when you are looking to get out there and make the rounds as a player on the scene .

Good Luck on how ever you decide ,

Kenny

I'm not voting with the majority. The chic is likely the centre of the band. If you don't get along with her then you are going to be unhappy, and if she doesn't like you she will rally the drones to drive you out.

I would want to sit back with them and talk. If there's common ground and a good personal fit then go for it. If you still feel discomfort with any of them then I'd take a pass. When it comes to people my gut tells me how to treat them.

I just can't believe she didn't get the Trump joke???
Oh well..
As for joining the band, I figure you've probably already made your mind up and just need a little push (here or there). So....

Will it work into your schedule? (Do you actually have a schedule now?LOL)

Can you try it for a while and see?  You know, sorta like a "trial offer" kinda thing?

Does it require you spend more money then you will make?? (kind of like what we do with Sonar?)

Joining a band can be a big commitment that lasts a long time...
Will you need to bring your meds?
Food and drinks included?

Given the face value of the words she either does or does not endorses said Trump. And she may be way of you asking without revealing your proclivities. Based on what you posted you did not make it clear to me that you made it clear to them (your proclivities).
