Should I take the tags off?

When  my husband asked me whatI wanted for mothers day... and pressed me for an actual answer, I told him that I wanted a new mic cord.

I'm not actually sure if there is anything wrong with my OLD one, except that the cover that goes over the connector slides back and forth, and maybe it's not getting the best connection, maybe giving me some static? I don't actually know.... It's also been run over by my wheeled chair a million and a half times by both me and the kids. On carpet.  But still.

So.  Last night, I was given a Standard 100 Monster Microphone cable.  My current cable was probably purchased as the lowest cost option, whatever that may have been at the GC.

The question is.... Do I want a BETTER one?  Will it make an appreciable difference?

it really depends.  I'm not a fan of Monster myself.  they're overpriced for what they are, the quality is decent, but some of their products I would not use because they use non-standard sizes.  for example, a lot of their 1/4" instrument cables have a larger diameter than most.  they'll fit in the jacks tighter than standard ones do and Monster claims that makes them have a better connection.  I think it just makes them have a higher stress on the jack.

the cable you have, if the backshell is coming off, that may or may not be an issue.  it might still be fine, but the backshell is there to protect the connection from dust and other elements and to help secure the connector and for strain relief.  if it's coming off, I would certainly think about repairing it or replacing it.

running over it with a chair with someone in the chair is never a good thing.  that will likely cause breaks in the strands of wire in the cable which causes a higher resistance, less copper to use for the current being sent and could easily cause "static" or popping depending on how bad the breaks are.

so, yes, I would want to replace that cable (and put it up out of the way of the chair!) but I personally would not likely replace it with a Monster cable.  I'd go with a good Mogami or even Hosa has some decent cables now (just not the lowest end ones).

Extra cables never hurt!  They only tend to stop working at the moment of greatest need so a backup helps avoid pulling your hair out.  Like Reece I feel that Monster's are usually just overpriced hype (and I only have a LOT of them because they were being blown out at 20% during a Labor day sale when they were changing the packaging).

Again Reece is on target about running over your cables.  This also applies to how you store them as well.  Learning to "Roadie Wrap" your cables (there are training videos on YouTube) will save you some headaches since they won't tangle and they will last much longer than just winding around an arm.

I like the "Berries" from Blue (Blueberry and Cranberry) and I've heard a lot of good things about the Mogami cables.

MAN, the things I DON'T know....

    Thanks, Beagle.  Good info.

Edit: and you, too, Craig.  This particular cable is not going anywhere.  It's part of my always-there-just-move-the-mic-stand-two-feet-to-the-left DAW set up, and I HAVE fixed the running over the cord problem (actually did so awhile back, but the damage, if there was any, is still there).  It's a 15' cable, that really only needs to be 5'... The extra is loosely coiled and hung on the stand. But, I'll probably watch those videos anyway, because you never know when my international stardom will take off. HAHAHAHAHA!

i have custom cables made for me at a local store...

they use Neutrik ends, and Mogami wire.

sounds so much better than any monster cable (high end and cheap end) i've ever used.....

and they make them for me for a fraction of the cost of a typical 'mid grade' monster cable.

Holy cow, why is it that every time I decide to do something good for myself, music wise, it always turns into another freaking chapter in the stuff I don't know but should catalog????

Thanks, Bat... I'll take a look at other options before removing tags.  :)

I never remove tags from cables anyway.

I normally find I can write something useful on them, like what they are connected to, or stick a coloured dot on them to code them.

Experience has shown that the monster products are great looking with average quality. I fix a lot of pedal boards and cables and the Monster stuff seems to break as often as the rest. I know that if you go to a specialty cable you can get a cable with les noise and more hum resistance. Mogami, evidence audio etc.

If the cable was crazy money you may want to exchange it for a lesser brand and go out for a nice lunch with your hubby using the change.

I know it sounds corny, but kindly thank your husband for the gift and be happy, after all it was what you asked for and he in thoughtful and loving kindness went out and purchased what he was probably told by an overbearing and impatient sales "guy" that the cable would suffice. Enjoy your gift and if it's not up to snuff purchase one that is and remember your husbands gesture by not creating an unnecessary fuss. Happy mothers day.

My man is so cool that he actually said as he gave it to me, "If it isn't what you want, go get what you want."

    And he meant it.

I AM inclined to follow your suggestion, though-- barring any major discrepancies here.  I likely wouldn't be able to hear the difference anyway. :)
