Shure ksm44 - acoustic & voice test

Shure ksm44 - acoustic test

http://www.lightningmp3.c...e/84869-ksm44test1.mp3

i bought a ksm44 a couple of months ago, hadn't had time to really play with it yet...
this is a quick demo

down and dirty, 3 separate vocal tracks, i copied all three and panned hard left/right, 4 separate acoustic tracks, threw a compressor and limiter across the mas bus, faders up
some reverb and delay for ambience

seemed more appropriate to post this here, instead of SONGS

Love this. Vocals need to be more upfront IMHO (harmonies are just too good to be overshadowed by the guitars). No nits with the acoustic guitars at all, although I have the impression that regardless of the hardware used, your acoustic takes will always sound good. It's a performance thing. I can't really "technically" comment on the mic per say, but it does sound good to me. Always a pleasure bat!

Listening in the cans (ATH M50).

took a listen , very nice, but to much going on to comment on the mic, single guitar and voice would work much better

thanks for checking this one out...
the vox are mixed back, as if they would be if it were another instrument..
they're only there to fill the sound out...
it was really featuring the guitar, i added the vox as an afterthought, and then decided to mix them behind the guitars.
think of them as another instrument!
    heheh

    thanks for listening.
you know, i'll never record a tune with only one voice, one guitar, so i like the idea of using the equipment that is actually indicative of the way it will be used in the studio on real material.
the real test of a mic, isn't the way it sounds all by itself, but the way it translates when you start stacking tracks with the same equipment....
most times, any deficiency in the mic or preamp, for that matter, will start to really rear it's head with multiple tracks.

There was a short interview in a recent Guitarplayer magazine with Andy Johns. Andy said that the KSM44 has become his "go to" mic. He was really hyped on it.

Thanks and I will listen now. Do you check out recordinghacks.com ? They have a LOT of great mic info, comparisons, and clips.

Your tune sounds nice and the guitars sound really good. I've been interested in the KSM44, I'm glad you took the time to post this.... now you need to get Robert Plant to write and sing  some lyrics with that.. it would fit (that is meant as a compliment).

sorry Batsbrew, I will disagree with you on this, I hear what you are saying but I would lose the
effects and double tracking. Thanks for posting though!

    thanks for checking this out...
and yeah, i read that GP interview with johns as well.
funny, that he'd come to that mic so late in the game....
i'm sure he's always had access to them before...

i got a call into robert...... no reply yet.
    heheh

that's ok, disagreeing is fine, we've all got our modus operendi that works for us, i've surely got mine.
i'm more concerned with end results, than a 'true' mic demo.
like i said, i'll never record anything with just a voice and guitar....
but the capture quality is still good on the single tracks!
