    That makes no sense. The side chain is on the output side.

    Nah. None of that. That's just a simple stereo-to-mono converter (670-to-660). The poor bastidge didn't have a 660.

    Me thinks that door needs to be slightly open for that compression to work no?

    Indeed looks like a Fairchild Tube Limiter, but slightly dissimilar.
