Side-chain help

I am trying to learn about side chaining and am interested in setting up a compressor on the bass track to be triggered by the kick. Here's a snippet from a Sound on Sound article:

The sense of separation between kick and bass can often be further improved by rigging a 'ducker' on the bass channel — that is, a compressor whose side‑chain is triggered from the kick‑drum track. Whenever the kick hits, the bass dips in level to make more space for it. A level drop of around 3dB still sounds pretty natural.

Can someone explain or point me to a link as to how to do this in Sonar Platinum please?

Hi. Try putting a Sonitus Compressor on your bass track. Add a send on your BD track to Sonitus Comp (Post). I usually use fast attack / release. Others will know far more about this than me.

All the best.

Guys - just wanted to thank you. I have remixed my latest song (as per signature below) using side chaining. I cannot believe the difference ducking the bass guitar to hear the kick has made. I have been aware of side chaining for years but thought it sounded way too advanced for me. Not saying I have it nailed completely but this has made me happy - massive step forward for me personally.

I've just started doing it too.  Makes a surprising difference.
