Side-chaining in Sonar 6?
It's not possible to side-chain in Sonar 6?! How can it be? I mean you gotta be able to compress the bass with a bass-drum feed to the compressor.....aaaarch ;) I've been looking all over the net....no-one seems to do it? Thank you for your time, Steve Pittoors Belgium

Make a stereo FX bus/channel and pan the kick hard left and the bass hard right then use a compressor with sidechain then wither send THAT to a mono bus or use MDA imager to bring one of the two channels to centre (I.e the bass) and cancel out the kick so you get the kick triggering the comp/gate but you only hear the bass or whatever you want. Handy work around.

I have a collection of diff. Sonar-related-stuff.. one member posted this not long ago.. hadn't have the time to figure it out yet, seems a bit difficult to handle.. Hey guys, There's a lot of confusion about stereo sidechaining/ducking compression in Sonar 6, so I thought I'd write up this short tutorial. There are multiple ways to have true stereo sidechains in Sonar. One way used by the twistedlemon.nl sidekick plugin is to have "virtual sidechain channels" (or "universal sidechain" as the db-audioware plugs call them - those plugs allow this as well), like this: trigger -> compressor in bypass mode (only sends out trigger info to virtual sidechain) -> mix out programme -> compressor (gets trigger info from virtual sidechain) -> mix out However this isn't always totally reliable. Another way is to split your stereo programme, and send the left channel to the first instance of a mono-sidechain plugin, and the left channel of the trigger goes to the other channel of that first instance. The same thing happens with the right channels: trigger left -> Comp1 trigger input programme left -> Comp1 mono input -> Mix left out trigger right -> Comp2 trigger input programme right -> Comp2 mono input -> Mix right out But then, changing the settings in one plugin instance doesn't change the settings in the other instance. Not good if you like good hands-on control. Another way is to use a surround channel. This is the best way to do it in Sonar 6. This is how to do it, step by step: 1. Create a surround bus in your project (right click on the bus pane and "Insert Surround Bus") 2. Call the bus something recognizable, like "crunchessor sidechain" 3. Go to your programme track pane. This is the track that's going to get ducked. Set the output to our "crunchessor sidechain" bus we created in Step 1. 4. Open the surround panner for your programme (by right-clicking on the track pane's surround panner and selecting "Open Surround Panner") 5. In there, make sure the channels L and R have numbers 0.0 next to them. Do this by changing the angle, focus, and width. It should be so by default.. but just in case, here are the settings I needed: Angle 0.0, Focus 100.0, Width 60.0 6. Go to your trigger's track pane. This will be the track that will be triggering the ducking. Set the output to our "crunchessor sidechain" bus. 7. In the trigger's surround panner, make sure you get the numbers next to Ls and Rs to 0.0. Do this by setting the correct Width in the panner. I set my width to 240.5 (I couldn't hit 240 :-) ), Angle to 0.0, Focus to 100.0. Make sure the crosshair is still up on top. You can also get the Ls and Rs levels to 0.0 by using the settings Angle -180, Width 120, Focus 100, but then the triggers will be swapped: the left trigger channel will trigger the ducking of the right programme channel and vice versa. You don't want that. 8. Go to our bus, "crunchessor sidechain". Insert Crunchessor as an FX bin. 9. Open the Crunchessor control. You will notice there are 4 tabs with channel names and a fifth tab called Surround Bridge. Those 4 tabs are four separate instances of Crunchessor. 10. In the Surround bridge, use these settings: (Plugin #): 1 (Left input): Left (Right input): Left Surround (Linked): Yes (Enable): Yes (Plugin #): 2 (Left input): Right (Right input): Right Surround (Linked): Yes (Enable): Yes (Plugin #): 3 and 4 - leave everything unchanged except for (Linked): No (Enable): No. This will turn off the 3rd and 4th instance of the plugin. 11. Now go to the first tab, which should read "L / Ls" (in that order, NOT "Ls / L"). Use this setting for the Crunchessor's sidechain: SC: R. This setting will propagate to the second instance of Crunchessor ("R / Rs"). It means that your trigger is the trigger channel you have panned to the surround back, in step 7. 12. Set up all your settings as you wish. True stereo ducking. 13. One more problem: we still have the trigger in the surround back. Even if you just mix down to stereo, the back signal will leak down to your front mix. We need to cut it out in the signal chain right after Crunchessor. To do this we will use Sonalksis FreeG (it's a free download), or any other plugin which can be used to mute (not turn down.. mute) audio. Insert this plugin as the next FX bin after Crunchessor. 14. In the Surround Bridge for FreeG, turn off all instances except for the one that's got Left Surround and Right Surround routed to it. 15. In the Ls / Rs tab, use the Mute button to cut out the trigger signal in the surround back. Done! Question is: why can't S6 use Crunchessor as a 4-in, 2-out plugin, like it's supposed to? :( Cheers, D. There are also Plugins/Compressors with Sidechain-ability available where you have to use 2 instances of that plugin. One on the source and one on the trigger-track.. I guess someone will chime in on that soon, or try a search on this forum.. also I guess that sidechaining will be available in Sonar 7 (at least I hope so), in VST3 sidechain is already a build-in feature at least that's what I heard..

You know I've tried doing that and it didn't work for me. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. From what I've ready I have to do these steps: 1. I created a new surround bus 2. I named it something like 'Chainerbus' 3. I set the output of the track that I want to get ducked to the surround bus. In this case I just added an instance of V-Station and set its output to 'Chainerbus' 4. I open the surround panner for the output of V-Station (by right-clicking on the track pane's surround panner and selecting "Open Surround Panner") 5. In there I made sure the channels L and R have numbers 0.0 next to them. 6. Then I added a new track and imported a Kick sound. I just put it the regular 4 beats. I also set it's output to the 'chainerbus'. 7. I added the 'crunchessor' plugin to the 'chainerbus' surround bus. 9. I opened Crunchessor. 10. I opened the Surround Bridge Tab, and used these settings: Plugin #: 1 (Left input): Left (Right input): Left Surround (Linked): Yes (Enable): Yes Plugin #: 2 (Left input): Right (Right input): Right Surround (Linked): Yes (Enable): Yes Plugin #: 3 and 4 - is unchanged except for (Linked): No (Enable): No. 11. Now I went to the first tab, which reads "L / Ls" and I used this setting for the Crunchessor's sidechain: SC: R. By what he wrote, it should allready be working by now, but I't aint for me. What am I doing wrong?

Going to try this myself too, later - but from what I read it's going to be finicky to say the least. Think you should maybe reread his step 7, he makes a few caveats there (Make sure the crosshair is still up on top), so it's probably easy to zig there where you should zag. This sounds so cool, exactly what I needed - but not easy, no. Thanks for posting that snippet, FH. [edit for typo]

Considering that side-chaining, especially kick/bass compression, is such a basic, common music production technique, it seems that CW should just buckle down and implement a simple method so we could get down to business without all this horsing around.

VC64 offers multiple side-chaining options. Wouldn't a plugin with this functionality be preferable to some of the routing nightmares described above?

(I keep the sidechain setup in a default template that I created months ago and I'm at work right now, so I don't recall for sure). But IIRC, I believe that I had to route the kick/bass to a STEREO bus that had the C1SC inserted to get it to work correctly. The problem was, the bass then only came out of one side, so I routed the output of that bus to a second mono bus. One other note: If I have a song in which the kick drops out, but the bass keeps going at any point, I will duplicate the kick track and fill in the corresponding kick patterns on the copied track wherever the bass keeps going. The reason for this is that the ducking creates a pumping rhythm in the bass line - if the kick drops out, the bass line will lose that pumping effect until the kick comes back in. By using an inaudible "dummy" kick track to trigger the sidechain, you get around that issue. Hopefully, I explained this clearly .

I know this is not exactly side-chaining, but I've had some success in rock music by simply creating a new buss called "Kick and bass", fed from the kicks/bass busses. I place a nice limiter in there, push it a bit, and BAM, it sounds great! Let's hope for side-chaining in the next release!

yepp.. a compressor/limiter.. some eq for the low-frequencies.. and you'll have parallel-compression.. some say it's the NY-Style.. results are great.. Sidechain is still a bit, hm.. very different...

Well, there are workarounds and there are solutions. Side-chaining has been on the wish list for Sonar 6 and probably also on the wish list of Sonar 5. We got VC64, which is great. There must be something about side-chaining that makes it hard to implement. Maybe one of the SW engineers can tell us. (?) Wilko

Kick & bass out to same bus, with L1 in the fx field (threshold:-12.1 / out ceiling:-10.4 / release:48.98). the kick put an attenuation on the bus and the volume remains controlled. Maybe this is not what you looking for, but it can do a good job. "Production Mixing Mastering With Waves"...

Could be, it's been a few years, but for the life of me, cannot remember seeing one, ever - and quite a few people have them, also in my surroundings - must be all oldies, I guess. Anyway, too late for me. Also, does not detract from my other points: Macs are for stylish people, Wintel boxes for Joe SixPack, and Linux boxes for geeks - cliche, but like all cliches has a stinging bit of truth at its heart. I sortof hang in the limbo between Wintel and Linux, but would probably have bought a Mac if I had had the dough, the need to belong to a certain crowd.

I was shocked when i moved over from logic 5.5 on my pc to sonar 5 last year.. logic has had side chaining a long, long time. its saddens me a little that sonar -good as it is-doesn't have this. to me that seems like a huge oversight; its one of them things that helps rhythm sections gel naturally, and for a product aimed at pro's it just reeks of amatuerism (real word??). especially when you consider how long it has been since ogic was even available on the pc in a relevant incarnation they really need to get on this cos we shouldnt have to be going to these lengths for something that should be relatively simple to implemnt. cheers for the workarounds and plug in links tho guys; i've been knocking my head against a brick wall for a while with this one. its nice to have a couple of alternative solutions.

Ah, just found a how-to in a book, 3 different ways even, using just Sonar + standard plugins (Dynamic Processor, Surround Comp etc). Need a real-time one myself anyway, so if that works as advertized (it should, the author really knows his stuff), I'll post the run-down here somewhere later this weekend - if you're really in a hurry, go get a Sonar 5/6 Overdrive book yourself, it's chock-full of such beauties.

So if I have a 3-input VST 2.4 plug, is that 3 mono ins? Or 1 stereo + 1 mono sidechain? 2.1? Or what? VST 1.x/2.x doesn't support the notion of "sidechain", so as a general-purpose VST host you can't simply start making assumptions about the intent of those extra input pins, etc. You would need to put that explicit control into the hands of the user... ... What SONAR would need today is to have their own special-purpose routing scheme which seperates plugins from FX bins -- you need a special "multi-routing" FX bin that routes inputs from outputs and outputs to inputs freely between tracks/busses and plugs. The user decides which track outputs go to which plug pins and which plug pins go to buss returns and etc. etc. etc. I believe the DAW Software That Shall Not Be Named (but rhymes with Creaper) has such a open-ended routing matrix (or some limited notion of it) that would allow for sidechaining to be set up. SONAR as implented today has a strict notion of plugins being plugged into tracks/busses, indeed with flexibile bussing, but not a total free-for-all in terms of plugging inputs and outputs. So... you go spend a bunch of money and time coming up with your own routing technology just to support the way that sidechain-capable plugins are implemented today (two main ins, plus two sidechains, or whatever). IMO you leave yourself with a liability in the long term. The advantage of Cake NOT implementing their own solution: 1.) Workarounds already exist today to get the desired result -- free plugs, surround busses, whatever... 2.) Cake's special-purpose solution needs to make sense to users as a general feature -- yes, in the way the Creaper routing matrix may make sense to users. In essence, you're introducing this whole new concept into the core of your track/FX/bussing/mixing topology -- is that a road you really want to go down (from a product development perspective)? 3.) Cake needs to support its own obsolete, special-purpose implementation for many versions to come once a standard, general-purpose solution is available (e.g., VST3) -- now you support the old thing, whose only purpose in the first place was to support sidechaining, plus now you have to also support the new "standard" sidechaining! Then you have to exaplin to new users why there's two ways to do it, which one is better, and why support for the old way is being dropped in SONAR version 9! etc. Anyway... it's a shame that there's no general solution to date, and that SONAR itself doesn't have a intrinsic workaround like some other software (except for sourround bussing)... On the other hand, being a soft eng myself, I am no fan of the "workaround mentality" -- esp. if there are out-of-band solutions that work. Leave he hacks and workarounds to the developers of the free plugins!

You can also use Reaper as a ReWire client to Sonar. Reaper's uber-flexible routing will allow you to get a true stereo side chain without all the hassle.
