Sidechaning in X1 ?..Trying to use Waves Vocal Rider..Help ?
So I had Vocal Rider for a while now and I couldn't use it with Sonar Producer 8.5.3 because Sonar didn't support sidechaning of non Sonar plugs. Well today I tried to try Waves Vocal Rider with X1...and I get the same result ? Is side chaining still no go even with X1 or am I doing this wrong ? Nuendo, Cubase and pro-Tools support side chaining.......

Isn't going to happen. That plug uses the VST3 side chaining STANDARD that cakewalk has publicly poo-pooed as insignificant. I have been mightily flamed here for requesting support for VST3. Cakewalk has their own side chaining "prom dress" which is well, for lack of a better word insignificant. Best.

Know what? Since Cakey wants to deny us the use of these tools like vocal rider and the clones, they should write us one and bundle it with Sonar. But we're all up in arms about colors. Sorry I'm a bit cranky this evening.

Damn this sux...I keep trying to dabble back into X1..the modded color screens helped me fire it back up...but only to be shot down again with this VST3 thingy not supported. How exactly did I become a sheep and buy X1 instead of starting fresh on another DAW (well you could say X1 was a totally new DAW..lol) is beyond. I can't use Vocalign either due to the VS3 support and this essential to doing Hip Hop now a days

I'm using x32 on a 64bit machine because the plugs I use most (API and SSL) are 32bit. I never bothered with the VST wrapper to use 32 bit plugs in 64 bit. I can still use the plug, since the side chain is disabled, it's not really riding the music sidechain input since well.....you cant select it :D I bought the plug a while back cause I seen my friend use it on Protools and I was impressed. It was an impluse by sorta thing. I just assumed it would "work" with Sonar, I had 8.5.3 then. Boy was I wrong, but I never really understood why it wouldn't work...now I do..lol

Yeah I too would LOVE to be able to use Vocalign - seems like pretty amazing software. And Vocal Rider. And surround support. I hope the next version of Sonar does VST3

What good is VR without the sidechain. That is is the whole point. On waves.com there is a host support table.I's kinda hard to find but it clearly states that VR does not support sonar. Because of the lack of vst3 sidechaining support. I think that cake has kind of screwed the pooch when they did their own sidechaining with their own plugs as if they were to implement VST3 Sidechain support, they would surely have to keep the old one too or the howls would go up when old sonar projects from X1 wouldn't sindechain the same in X2.

kinda ironic how sonar forces us to use protools to get vst3. soon as protools comes up with thier version of skylite there wont be much need for sonar anymore. prochannel is nice but the main reason I use sonar is for the dual monitors and composing with vsti is easier. once you finally get protools to work, there aint much that can compete with it. I'd like to see someone invent a "daw shell" that lets you take what you like most from 2 or 3 daws and combines it into a super daw that would actually be perfect for everyone.
Phenom Quad core, 8gb ram, 3.5tb of Fine Music Storage Vault Under Armed Guard w/ UAV support (air-hog chopper), set of MA-15D, Delta 10-10 pci w/interface, m-box 3 pro, projectmix I/O, Metal Pop Filters, Two SKB cases Full of Suck Removal Buttons, Cedar Walls, Stripper Pole (helps with mastering & block priceing) more stuff i'm to lazy to add. ;) P.S. good Memory foam is freakin awesome.

From the waves website.... doesn't look like Sonar is included in documentation for support. Vocal Rider In Depth Writing Automation with Vocal Rider After setting Vocal Rider according to your program material, follow the steps below. Writing Automation - In your DAW, set the vocal track’s automation mode to 'Write' or 'Latch'.
- Enable automation for Vocal Rider's main Rider Fader.
- Set Vocal Rider’s automation mode to 'Write'.
- Hit Play.
Please note: The Vocal Rider interface window must be open during automation writing. All previously written automation will be lost in Write/Latch modes. Reading Automation - In your DAW, set the vocal track’s automation mode to 'Read'.
- Set Vocal Rider’s automation mode to 'Read'.
- Hit Play.
Editing Rider Fader Automation Controlling Vocal Rider Using a Mouse or Control Surface - In your DAW, set the vocal track’s automation mode to 'Touch'.
- Set Vocal Rider’s automation mode to 'Read'.
- Hit Play.
- Use the main Rider Fader to manually ride as needed.
When you release the Rider Fader, it will return to the previously written automation.
Using the main Rider Fader automation line in the track editor - In your DAW, set the vocal track’s automation mode to 'Read'.
- Set Vocal Rider’s automation mode to 'Read'.
- Open the Rider Fader automation line in the track editor to manually draw in your edits.
Assigning Sidechain Input Here’s how you assign the instrumental mix to Vocal Rider's music Sidechain input: Pro Tools - Select all tracks (except for the vocals) currently assigned to the Master mix output. Shift+Ctrl+Alt and click the Output menu on one of the tracks. Select an unused mono bus; it may help to name it “Music Sidechain” or similar. All selected tracks should now display the Master output with a “+” sign, indicating they are also routed to another bus.
Or On all tracks (except for the vocals) currently assigned to the Master mix output, create a post-fader Send going to an unused mono bus, which you can call “Music Sidechain” or similar. Set all those send faders to “0”. - Insert Vocal Rider on the vocal or vocal group track. Open the Vocal Rider GUI and click on the Sidechain (key) menu. Select the “Music Sidechain” bus you have created.
Logic Pro - Select all the tracks (except for the vocals) currently assigned to the Master mix output.
- In the Sends display box, select and assign an unused bus; it may help to name it “Music Sidechain” or similar. An Aux track is automatically created with that bus as an input; you can delete it, as it is unnecessary.
- Alt+click on the Send knob. It will set the send level on all selected tracks to “0”.
- Insert Vocal Rider on the vocal or vocal group track. Open the Vocal Rider GUI and click on the Sidechain menu. Select the “Music Sidechain” bus you have created.
Digital Performer - Select all the tracks (except for the vocals) currently assigned to the Master mix output.
- In the Sends display box, select and assign an unused bus; it may help to name it “Music Sidechain” or similar.
- Ctrl+click on the Send knob. It will set the send level on all selected tracks to “0”.
- Insert Vocal Rider on the vocal or vocal group track. Open the Vocal Rider GUI and click on the Sidechain menu. Select the “Music Sidechain” bus you have created.
Cubase / Nuendo - Insert Vocal Rider on your vocal track or group, and press the Sidechain button.
- For each track (except for the vocals) currently assigned to the Master mix output, select a Send route to the Vocal Rider Sidechain bus.
- Set the Send to active, and Ctrl+click to set its level to “0”. Repeat for each track currently assigned to the Master mix output.
Please note: It may be preferable to use the Mix window. Studio One - Insert Vocal Rider on your vocal track or group, and press the Sidechain button.
- For each track (except for the vocals) that is currently assigned to the Master mix output, select a Send route to the Vocal Rider Sidechain bus.
Known Issues - General: Vocal Rider GUI must be open in order to Write Rider Fader automation.
- General: When Vocal Rider is in Write mode, it is not recommended to make manual adjustments by over-riding the main Rider Fader during automation. Switch Vocal Rider to Read mode before making manual adjustments. (In your DAW, keep the track automation set to Write/Touch/Latch). Manual adjustments made using a Control Surface are also not recommended.
- Pro Tools: While playing a loop with Vocal Rider set to Write, and Pro Tools set to Write, only the first run will write automation; the second run will not Write and will not Read, but the Rider Fader will still move.
- Pro Tools: If the drawn automation is jagged and saw-like, press “Off” then “Write” again on the Vocal Rider automation.
- Logic: When bypassing Vocal Rider during Write mode, a flat line will be written at the last fader position.
- Logic: Music control is always available, even if Sidechain is not connected. In this case, it will act as an offset to the Target setting.
- Logic: When writing Rider Fader automation, it is not recommended to write automation for other controls, as it will disrupt the Rider Fader automation data.
- Logic/Digital Performer: Even though Sidechain can appear to be connected in Preview mode, it may not be connected. Toggle “Multi-Input Mode” / “Mono” to force the Sidechain connection.
- Studio One: The send to Sidechain may only be routed from Audio tracks.

Jesse G - I see that now and after I bought it back when I had 8.5.3...I just assumed it was a VST and work in Sonar. I was thinking cool, this is just a regular plug. When I found out it wouldn't work with 8.5.3 I kinda forgot about the plug. Then I just remembered I had the plug and thought maybe it would work with the new cutting X1, but I guess nothing changed. I thought I was doing something wrong cause being X1 is new, I was thinking wow, this might work now !

try loading vocal rider as the last plugin after your sidechaining plugins are loaded as a seperate plugin, vocal rider has to be the last plugin loaded in your FX bin in order to work, but it will only work in 32 bit Sonar as waves plugins do not work in 64 bit

Guys the plug works in 32 bit, which I'm happy with. Well its works, but I can't use the side is pretty much the point of the plug to begin. I tried that whole 64bit Sonar with using my plugs in 32bit and alot of the plugs were messed up and stuff, just to much to sort out when the 32bit was working fine. 64bit to me is useless, I never have any projects that takes over 3gb RAM anyways. This might be the straw that broke that boke the camels back now that PT is native ....sad to say

why side chaining is supposed to be the whole point of the plugin? Actually the whole point of this plugin is being able to use it alone and not in side chain. use it instead of a limiter, but instead of cutting everything above the given value it just decreases the whole volume. p.s can someone give an example of how to use the VR on a vocal track using side chain?

Did you not read post #13 of this thread ? The plug has to have a side chain input so it knows what to raise and lower the volune too. No simpler then that... Sure you can raise and lower the fader manually an write automation, but again, thats not what the plug was designed for, look at the Waves directions in post #13.

You ever notice at the top of the plug, the "Music" and "Vocal" section is greyed out and you cant use it ? Thats the side chain input where you let the plug control the fader based on what its hearing coming in through the side chain. Open up Sonar and load VR..the top 2 controls will be unselectable

Since those important features are not working, according to what the VR works currently? I mean the fader is still moving, so what audio information triggers the fader in order to move?

+1 Does not function properly in any version of Sonar - the automated "riding" requires side-chaining which is implemented as VST3 only

support of vst3 seems a nobrainer to me just as supporting vst natively was 10 years ago. Very strange that they would resist on this one.... all standards should be quickly adopted/supported. gotta keep your finger on the pulse of the indistry if you want to stay alive. BUT- whoever said protools (above) "does it all" needs to spend a little more time using it. protools is much more limiting than sonar. It does a few things better than sonar, but sonar does dozens of things better than it. It is much improved with vs. 9 out, but it is still a royal pain. I have both and reach for Sonar whenever possible.
