Sign this thread if you want Cakewalk to FIX METRONOME ISSUES
First of all, I would personally rate X1D a HUGE success! Thank you, Cakewalk! It was definitely worth the wait. Thank you for not only giving us an "update," but also for taking the time to ADD huge things, like the new EQ, which is fantastic, by the way, and metronome subdivisions. FANTASTIC. THANK YOU! But, there's just one more issue many of us would like you to address, either in future X1 updates or whatever your next DAW might be -- metronome STABILITY. Many of us rely on the metronome for recording and use it extensively. I personally do and it seems as if a lot of other people on this forum do as well. I remember in Sonar Home Studio 6XL, the metronome just stopped working for absolutely no reason. Just disappeared. Nothing. No metronome. If it happened to one or two people, fine, but it was like.... tons and tons of people. I'm sorry, that's just unacceptable. So, I am asking you, as a customer, to at least consider looking into the problems that we, as customers, have experienced with the metronome. I am, by no means, "calling you guys out." You have all been amazingly polite, courteous and helpful on this forum (even when we, myself included, haven't returned the same courtesy).... my goal is just to show you guys how much of an issue it really is. Thanks!

People who have criticised the metronome have gone missing and never been seen again. Just saying like. I think they have been trying to improve any metronome issues. Didn't it get a fleeting mention in Webinar:The Movie. Mine went AWOL in Sonar 6 or 7 but I think that's been sorted in later versions, although it never was at the time. It was only cured by buying a new version. £89 was worth it just to hear that soothing click.

Well Jimmy, what I think you have here is the same thing I have with the PC modules turning on/off by themselves on some systems ... and that is, I'm the only one stupid enough to keep bringing it up because, well, everyone else experiencing it abandoned ship. Yeah, I've seen problems with the Metronome, but I've always got it working again by a reboot, which is something that I've learned is just part of using Sonar. We could jump ship, but I'm pretty sure it's just about the same on board other vessels as well, so we might as well stay on this one until she's sea worthy or sinks.

I think you might have more success requesting a fix, or receiving technical support via the recommended support mechanism than asking people to sign a virtual petition of sorts. While a thread can demonstrate whether your issue is something others are having by their responses, Cakewalk still has a recommended problem reporting system by which they document and possibly prioritize valid problems. Have you used the Problem Reporter? http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/problemreport.aspx Have you requested assistance from technical support? 1-888-CAKEWALK or Email http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/csr.aspx If others have the same problem and use the same systems I think the fine folks at Cakewalk will more readily be aware of the problem and whether others are having it. Just a suggestion and no I'm not joking or being a smart @#$ - we have various tools at our disposal for a reason. As for signing the petition - doesn't happen to me (so far), when it does I'll be sure to report it.

John T What's actually wrong? Maybe someone will know how to fix it. Sometimes the Metronome will stop outputting sound and you will have to reboot Sonar to get it working again. It happened a lot to me in Producer 8.0 ... but seems to have gotten progressively better from version to version, but it still does happen from time to time.

Though I don't recall any details, I think the metronome is a plugin of some sort. I wonder if a VST scan would help?

As I said before I've experienced the metronome going silent on me in versions of X1 before X1D. I haven't been in X1D much since the update, so I haven't seen this happen, yet. Furthermore, when it happens it's radomly and there is no set of steps that I can report to reproduce the issue. The same was the case with SONAR 8.5. Yet, without steps to reproduce the problem, I think it's useless to log a bug report. Bub mentioned a restart would get the metronome sounding again. I never tried that (I usually have to start a new project to get it sounding, again,) so I will give it a shot next time, but it's still a creativity smasher. I need the metronome the instant I need it, not a restart away.

I just tested my system with using all the different options for metronome (count in, audio, midi, etc.) recording, playing back, etc. and it works as it should. If I find a problem, I will get back to you. I don't think this is a problem that many have so I don't get the "jump ship" remarks. I think working with support is #1. Rimshot

There's definitely something strange with the nome at times. I can't make it do it all the time, but there are times when I start a new project, click on "metro on during recording" and it doesn't turn on. I have to literally right click on the icon, bring up prefs and I just click ok because it's already set and should work. I press record, it works. So something is weird...I just don't know hy this happens. I'll tell you what else I'm going to do which maybe all of us should consider. It may not be a bad idea to create new project templates as well as track/instrument templates based off of this new version of Sonar. I know we had to do this in the past and it did help with quite a few of my issues. I'm going to start doing them a little at a time this week until I've got them all ready. We may even be able to get away with loading in an old one and just over-writing it using the new version. I'm going to try that first and see if any weird anomalies pop up. But that metronome thing has definitely got me a few times. I've never had an issue with it disappearing or never turning off/never turning on to where I needed to reboot. That's definitely scary and I'd be concerned with that situation. But I've seen it not work for me several times at the start of a project. Gonna resave some templates and see how I fair. :) -Danny

Good point that Danny about templates. I always re-create mine out of habit now after a big update, just did it yesterday for X1d (I'd also done a full uninstall and re-install from scratch). Not much of a hassle for me as I only have one template. No idea whether this is the problem here or not, mind you.

stevec Though I don't recall any details, I think the metronome is a plugin of some sort. I wonder if a VST scan would help? The (DXi) plugin in question is GroovePlayer.dll. It should live its own "Groove Player" folder somewhere under the "Shared <somethingorother>" folder. If you've deleted this file because you didn't think you needed it for anything...then I'll bet this is your problem. (Being as how it's not a VST, a scan won't help. The easiest thing to do is to reinstall it from your distribution media.)

I have rarely had mentronome issues. It might be due to the fact that I use an external midi device. I have an old Alesis D4 drum module that I payed some good money for years ago and rarely used it. So I feel guilty to toss it. Anyway the only real problem I have is using an odd meter in the middle of normal meters. After the sequence passes thru the odd metered measure the click is happening on the after beat. So my point is...an external midi device might solve 99% of your metronome issues.

I know it's not a 100% acceptable workaround but couldn't you just create an instrument track with a midi metronome? Would save you having to reboot/restart all the time.

Yeah... I don't know if the metronome works or not.... I reckon it does because I hear it clicking away for the count in. I always turn it off. ALWAYS. I prefer instead to use a drum track as my timing reference. If you have any of the Cake products of recent..... you will have drum loops in there. Find a nice simple drum loop, drag it in and stretch it out. Problem solved, and it sounds better.
