Simple guitar & vocal song with my sister in law's gorgeous voice.

A song my sister-in-law wrote (accapella) for my brother.  I helped her by writting a basic chord structure under her melody-keeping the focus on the vocals and the message.  Very cool tune and a beautiful voice!

You should see it, she doesn't play any instruments but is pitch perfect with great melody.  She sang it exactly like this before I even picked up the guitar!

Thank you Squashman!  It was cool because I tend to write lyrics first and then I hear the melody in my head and start writing the music.  So when she starts singing these songs she writes it's no different and I can just get to work.  (not that the music on this track is anything remotely extravagant)

Hi Chuck. She does have a gorgeous voice and that's quite a talent that she can write out complete songs like this accapella. Nice job strumming along with her too. I have no knowledge or experience with vocal recording (but I'm still gonna offer my two cents. What the heck). I think a smoother or better choice in reverb would compliment her voice much better. I'm sure this is a quicky you threw together but her voice is worth the effort.

Thanks Rynosynth,  Actually I have no verb on her voice at all.  There is a bit of reverb on the 2 guitar tracks but on the vocal I have only used a couple pieces of the Vx 64 = the comp, doubler, and a little eq.

I figured out the tempo she wanted it at and set up a click, then recorded 1 pass with an open mic in the room and the click with me playing and her singing through my pa system.  Then I went back and track the 2 guitars and she laid the final vocal and nailed it in one shot, start to finish as you hear it.  I wish they all sung so well!

    Hey, Chuck,

Very nice job on this cool sounding indie style track!  She's got a great, natural voice which sounds really good floating above the verbed guitar.

The sheer simplicity of the song really lets the story flow through nicely, and this is a perfect example of "less is more" being the right choice.

Dynamite job, Chuck, and have a Merry Christmas!

Thanks Guys.   My other guitarist in the band heard this yesterday and said " Ok, here's the plan... we quit the band and take the drummer with us, we promote the hell out of her and do all the hard work to get the ball rollin', then hold on as this roller coaster takes off".

I think the other guitarist has a great idea!  lol

She DOES have a great voice and obviously lots of talent.  I'm with the reverb guys...maybe just a little bit would help the vocal sit a little better.

Now when all the laughter dies down at me giving mixing advice, maybe we can carry on this conversation.  :)

    Great job...and she's fantastic!

What a lovely voice.  Just the voice and guitar work quite well, but because the guitar is wet and the voice is dry, they sound like they're in two different environments.  Perhaps, as noted above, this song just needs to be fleshed out a bit.  Keep up the good work.

    All the best,

Anyone who can sing like that accapella has got some serious talent!

    Very nice indeed!

The tune is begging for a nice production. I look forward to it!

    nice voice.
this has some potential here to be fully developed.
this almost reminds me of the opening part of that song that LIVE did way back when....
    mid 90's, maybe...
    the one about 'lightning strikes'........

maybe you should arrange this full band, that kicks in after the first chorus...
let her have a chance to really belt it out against the power of a full band.

do the first part with 12 string acoustic....
then kick it in heavy, but not metal.

    Thanks guys,
I am playing with some ideas for a full production version of this an a couple of other songs of hers though I am concerned in that she has never worked with a full band. It would require her to (as stated above) belt it out!  I have yet to hear her do that at this point.  I am sure with a little coaching she CAN project more but I don't think she ever has.  Everything she has done (that I have heard) is alot like this... more on the mellow side and not really reaching for the rafters much.

Janet/Lynn- You may be right about the vocal being so dry against the reverbed guitar...  I'll play around with it.
