Simple instrument track ain't so simple?
I don't get it; I split a simple instrument track and then want to put it back together so with both tracks selected (audio and MIDI) I right-click and select "make simple instrument track" and nothing happens"...so I look in my trusty Sonar X1 Power! and it's not listed in the index...so I open up the Comprehensive Sonar X1 user guide and ctrl F "simple" and nothing shows up there either...what am I missing here??!! Thanks very much, Randy

Hi Randy, No idea why it's not working... works fine here. You CTRL+clicked on both track numbers to make sure the tracks are selected? Also, why split the tracks in the first place? With the new Inspector, you can select the instrument track and then use the Audio and MIDI tabs at the bottom of the Inspector to access all track parameters. Scott -- Scott R. Hey Scott, Yes both selected ....I split them because it wasn't working when I tried to route it to another instrument so I thought I could if I just had the MIDI track....anyway, not sure that's important but I'm really surprised there is no mention of the Simple Instrument Track thingy in your book or the user guide. I'm just now starting to use them regularly and I was just going to read up on it but can't seem to find it!

I should have been more diligent and looked there but figured it would be listed in the index. Anyway, when I select either (your book states I can just click either) or both and right-click and choose "make instrument track" I get a dialogue box stating "Making an instrument track requires that a single audio and MIDI track are assigned to the same track" (I click ok but they don't merge)...do you get this message before they merge successfully? Thanks very much Scott, Randy EDIT: also if I wanted to try another instrument on an established simple instrument track how should I go about doing it....do I need to split it? EDIT 2: I just found the workaround to merging the 2 is to simply drag the MIDI data to the instrument track and then deleting the MIDI track but I'm guessing the only way to audition another instrument would be to split them first right?

Hi Randy, No, I don't get that message. 1. What did you change after you separated the instrument track into two tracks? 2. When you say "try another instrument" do you mean you want to assign the MIDI track to a different synth? If so, that synth needs to be inserted into the project already or you need to insert it and then assign the output of the MIDI track to the new instrument. Scott -- Scott R. I have a couple of edits I added to my post just above your most recent...please let me know if I have assumed incorrectly...if not, I think you've straightened me out on the matter. Thanks again Scott, Randy

That message, "Making an instrument track requires..." means that you have more than one midi track pointed to the same synth. That's why your workaround seems to work. Possibly, what you meant to do is direct your copy of the MIDI track to a different synth audio track so you could try different instruments. Bill B

yes that is what I was trying to do...is splitting it the only way to do this? Thanks very much, Randy

g_randybrown yes that is what I was trying to do...is splitting it the only way to do this? No, you don't need to split the track. That's why I mentioned the Inspector earlier. Just select the track. Press I to open the Inspector (if it's not open already). The click the MIDI tab at the bottom of the Inspector. This displays all the MIDI parameters for the selected Instrument track. Then change the O (output) parameter to the new instrument (which must already be inserted into the project). That way you can quickly change the track to different instruments without having to split it. Scott -- Scott R. --This thread reminds me of why I still use the good ol' fashioned combo of two tracks, a MIDI track and an Audio track. No confusion about what's what, and when I don't want the MIDI track visible anymore, I just make it go >poof!< with the Track Manager. Randy B.

I don't expect anyone to believe me but I swear that's exactly what I was doing yesterday but when I selected the midi or audio tabs I only had the audio options available....there were no synths listed after clicking the midi tab. Thanks everyone, Randy
