Since I own them I thought....
Why not use them at least once? So my plan for 2013 (if we're still around) is to do a full song each in both R*E*A*P*E*R and S*T*U*D*I*O**O*N*E**2.5. I have no plans to switch DAWs, just want to see what my learning curve would be. For R*E*A*P*E*R, my friend Tom is a MacHead and has never owned a DAW and is thinking of getting into it for at least rehearsing prior to recording in my studio. So at least I would gain enough knowledge on the product to get him going and to answer questions he may have. I hope the two UIs and controls are not that different.

I tried R****R, but it just never clicked w/ me. S1 is very easy to use, and this new update brings you swipe comping that's pretty much as good as Logic's. It's pretty hard to go back to the old way of comping once you've tasted that.

What little I tried in R*R was the fact that a track is a track and/or a bus and you can route anything to anything. I want to give that a real go if I can.

bapu Why not use them at least once? But you'll ruin their unused-mint-collectible-value in the process!

swipe comping Can you explain what this is exactly Rain? I use various comping methods depending on what I'm using but I'm not getting what 'swipe' comping actually is. Being as I use S1 for certain things I might be doing it already and not know.

Basically, you just swipe across the parts you want to hear from each take. No need to solo, mute, splice anything. The comp builds itself. When you extend or shorten a selection on one take, the other selections from other takes are automatically adjusted. It's like having an assistant doing all the dirty work for you - you just pick the parts of the performance you like. Here's a very basic preview - I picked the shortest vid, but it gives an idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_1Zdmn9jc0 Logic also automatically save playlists/comps which can be easily accessed via a menu on the comp folder track. Makes auditioning alternate comps a breeze. Don't know if S1 does that.

So the one thing that S1 improved w/ the last release is that you don't have to click on the selection and "promote" it to comp - like in Logic, it's all done automatically, in real time. Playlisting/alt comps may still put Logic ahead, I'll have to check if S1 has that too.

Thanks for the info, it's just that different apps give all these things different names but yes I can see why that method is cool. I currently go this way for most of my audio comping which I guess is similar and it's linked to the automatic generation of take lanes whilst looping through a section (or the entire song). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c326DwEDUoc It looks pretty similar to me. I would think that X2 is doing that now too, I didn't get chance to check it out on my trial but now it has take lanes I would imagine the comping has gone the same way. I can't confirm that though. I haven't done any comping in Sonar for so long, since Record (now Reason 6.5) came out, that I didn't think to check it out on the demo.

Since I own them I thought....why not use them at least once? I own an appendix, but in 61 years I've never felt a need to put it to use. In talking with others, it seems to only come up in the context of an uninstall.

Looks similar indeed. The one difference - no biggie - I see is is that you have to use the razor tool and enable crossfades, whereas in Logic you are automatically in comp mode by default, so no switching tools. Another thing which may be different is that merely clicking can select. For example, say you've swiped/selected from bar 1 to 4 of the first take. Simply clicking the same region on another take will make that the selected/audible selection. So you can effectively chop up your track into short segments and audition each take of that segment w/ one click. It's "real-time" at it's best, imho.

bapu Why not use them at least once? So my plan for 2013 (if we're still around) is to do a full song each in both R*E*A*P*E*R and S*T*U*D*I*O**O*N*E**2.5. I have no plans to switch DAWs, just want to see what my learning curve would be. For R*E*A*P*E*R, my friend Tom is a MacHead and has never owned a DAW and is thinking of getting into it for at least rehearsing prior to recording in my studio. So at least I would gain enough knowledge on the product to get him going and to answer questions he may have. I hope the two UIs and controls are not that different. Before reading the rest of the fred I have to ask, Why Bother? All it is different command protocals and GUI configurations.

Being fluent w/ a second DAW never hurts. As much as I like Logic, switching to Pro Tools when it's time to mix seems to help me shift gears, so oddly enough, even if I'm much more comfortable w/ Logic, I often mix faster and better in PT (even if I spend a lot of time cursing how convoluted it is in some areas by comparison).

Oh, and in terms of bread and butter plug-ins, S1 is pretty awesome. The gate has got to be my absolute favorite. The EQ - I wish they sold that one as a plug-in. The compressor and the channel strip are also very good. And the essential binaural pan is there.
