ston For myself, I'd like to see some more guitar-related content. As mastering is something that's very specific to the piece of music in question (and how it's been mixed), as well as requiring a particular listening environment and good, experienced ears, I'm not sure how much can be taught/learnt from a video. Having said that I like all your videos so would buy another whatever the content :-)
+1 on guitar related content. It is amazing how much you can learn from these videos. It was not enough to watch the video. I followed along doing the tricks Craig taught in his first two videos. You got to experiment with the ideas in the video and put them into practice. For me the easiest way to do this was with my computer setup and a dual screen monitor. The video played on one screen and Sonar was open on the other screen. It really helped in getting all I could from the knowledge presented. I just followed along on what was being taught. I did the same thing with all the videos I purchased from cakewalk. This is a great way to learn how to get the most out of Sonar.

Uh, YES! I'm a big believer in real-world exampled are the best teachers, but even in the case of a mastering video, I'd say take an actual project and master it, hitting the necessary teaching points along the way. If it's a common technique but not applicable to the project you can always A/B that concept...but using MiLaR as an example having a real-world project to reference back to makes for good material!

Where did you get that idea? Craig is doing this in his time - afaik he does not work for either CW or Gibson - just because he is an admin of the site does not make him an employee. Further, nothing in his OP suggests Gibson (CW) is paying him anything for this work. I find that while may people are full of enthusiasm and promises when something is free, they suddenly lose said enthusiasm if it is something they need to contribute to ($'s wise) at least with something like "crowd funding" Craig gets a list of genuinely interested folk (not tyre kickers) prepared to invest a little in the overall project

musichoo Yes mastering is a great idea. I have not "exploit" the Sonar tools enough yet. I have a couple of suggestion. Show us how to set the frequency range of a multiband compresser like the LP64. Show us some common mistakes of mastering so that we know what not to do. Perhaps show us how to master 2 to 3 different styles or music. For example a guitar based rock/metal music and somethings else like EDM.
co-sign on this. A lot of mastering videos do the one size fits all approach. Mastering a full orchestra track, minimalist techno, solos didgeridoo songs and top 40 hip-hop will undoubtedly have variation in process.

I may be mistaken, but it is my understanding that Craig is an archangel at Gibson. And this should probably appear somewhere in Craig's signature, as it does for Cakewalk employees.

First of all, thanks for all the great ideas, like showing common mistakes as well as what to do right. Some other points: Yes, I am currently a Gibson employee. Never thought of including it in my sig because I come to this forum primarily as a user; participation is not part of my job description and I come here on my own time . The only exception to that was answering questions about Gibson's intended acquisition of CW when that was first announced. As to whether the video would be done on my own or be part of what I do for Gibson, that remains to be seen. Gibson is into educating users so it would be a good fit, but there's a lot to do at Gibson. The video might end up being a "weekends" project...we'll see. As to people being interested in the video but ultimately not buying it, that doesn't concern me. The first two videos did very well. People asked for more videos at the time, but I said I wasn't going to do videos just for the sake of doing videos. However, I think mastering in Sonar is a video well worth doing. In addition to techniques I would also cover some of the background on mastering. As to guitar-oriented material, that's something else I've considered. But that might lend itself more to a series of videos on YouTube or something...not sure. For now, a video on mastering with Sonar seems to feel right. Thanks again for all your input and the great suggestions!!

Craig, Having seen your presentation on mastering at AES in SF a year or so ago, I know you can present the topic with great clarity. One thing to consider, however - many of us have separate video-watchin' machines and music-makin' machines. In other words, the audio on the machines with which we access the net (i.e., not our DAW machines) is likely to be inadequate to convey the nuances of mastering. Edit: Maybe I misread your intent and you're talking about doing a DVD tutorial to be sold as opposed to online tutorials ... in which case, never mind. :-)

Craig - + a bunch for the suggestion and idea. It would be fantastic to have some tutorial coverage on mastering and with Sonar tools for that. I like just about all of the suggestions above. Great crowd sourcing on thinking about what could be helpful. I would think the tutorial could be cool if you covered mastering a few tracks - each with its own set of problems, and how you would point out what's making each one sound bad, and how to approach deducing how to get each one better. I would add that it would be cool if you discussed reference tracks. I realize you'll be using Sonar stuff only, but I'm using Magic A B now at the very end of my bus/signal flow and that's really convenient for flipping back and forth between what I'm working on and a song or songs of a similar energy.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Excellent idea Craig. I would add my voice to those calling for starting at the end of the mix process. Also, I like the idea of doing both a quick walk-through of an entire mix, then adding tips and tricks, both positive and negative.

I would also very much appreciate a tutorial on mastering, as I currently have nothing on the subject. I've got all the other X-series videos. I'd prefer a video download like the others so it can be viewed off line. I buy no third-party plugins so it would be great if the tutorial used only tools available with X-3.

wow! another Ted Greene human.... brings me back to the days in So Cal when we were all enamoured with Ted's amazing playing skills in the San Fernando Valley. We often played together at the old Tri Center in San Fernando Valley... Mike Gannon and Ted together, with Butch singin' up a storm....we were all kids then and what a different world it was. Ted put the ole' fender amps on the map! I vote for mastering vids... many of my ideas suffer from poor mastering and I'd love to get better at it, as next year I'm planning to be immersed in songwriting like never before!

I don't think of mastering as being one song. I would like to see at least 3 songs. Matching volumes, fades and getting all 3 to sit beside each other as a group. You could showcase Sonar's metering, Quadcurve, PC4K bus comp and Concrete limiter. Then you could export into Pyro and set the markers or whatever. Any video would be great though!

I would love to know how to take the few to several to many tracks that comprise the songs I write and sing/play with varying degrees of (non-)expertise and craft them into something really solid, sonically. I tend to write wordy songs that are long and fairly simple, instrumentally. I have a soft voice (female) but good pitch and am decent, but by no means great, on several instruments. My strong points are probably lyrics and song structure and my weak point is probably a lack of bravura technique on any one instrument. Typically, I'll have at least one voice and acoustic guitar. From there, maybe an acoustic 12-string and some harmony vocals. Possibly play a bass track on my good old Fender bass. If there's more, it may be to stick on some keyboard parts posing as various instruments to fill in the extra sounds that I may have in my head. Artificial drums may or may not ice the cake. Whatever the combination, it's all played by me, so necessarily recorded one part at a time. So, it's always some actual acoustic tracks and sometimes additional various synthetic sounds that I have to fashion into some sort of pleasing and cohesive whole. I include all of these details in case it may have a small influence on what is included in any mastering tutorial you might release. Many tutorials seem to begin with the idea that most music consists predominantly of midi or at least of electronic tracks. I'm hoping you wouldn't forget us mostly acoustic musicians. Any guidance and/or tips from you would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and best of luck!
