Singular CWP Project Issue - Need Help
Good morning, I've encountered a crash that is unique to me, and it happened right at the end of finishing a MIDI only project that was going very very well, and has got me very distraught to the point of me signing up and posting here. But enough of that; the issue is this. On this one CWP file only, I was busy recording the very last part of the project. I added the Piano VST (Berlin Concert Grand from NI), and my MIDI completely cut out. I exited the program and received a crash. From that moment on, every time I try to open the file, I get the exact same crash. THIS CRASH EVEN HAPPENS IN SAFE MODE WITH "NO TO ALL" SELECTED. I also installed Sonar on my other machine upstairs (running Windows 8), and the same thing happens there as well. I cannot post specifics about the crash right now as I'm at work, but I will re-post again at some point (with the CWP file as well if anyone wants it), along with the dump file from Sonar and anything else people might find helpful. The issue is the standard C000005 error, but why it's happening and WHY only on this file is beyond me and I really need help saving this file as I don't want to have to re-record it all again unless I have too. My machine specifics (though bare in mind it happens on other machines too): Windows 7 64 Sonar X1(a) Producer Edirol UA-25 Sound Card 4gig of Ram 4x AMD Processor Multiple Kontact Instruments (that I've used time and time again without fail). Any help or assistance would be HUGELY appreciated. Thank you, Steve

Hi Steve, Unless someone here knows exactly what the deal is (which you very well may get lucky on) your best bet is to call tech support later today if you can (if you're in the US) after 1 pm EST or fill out a report and mail it to tech support. The dmp file won't do anyone any good here as it can only be read by Sonar support. Mailing tech support and supplying the .cwp is a good way to go about it but you never know how long it may take them to get back to you. If you call them they may be able to work it out with you over the phone and you may be able to email the cwp to the tech you get right there in real time. That's what I'd do if I were you if it's possible. Definitely take a shot here and see what results you get. Some really smart people on the forum that may be able to work through this. I'm actually pretty decent at working this stuff out but I don't have a clue as to why something like this may be happening to you. I've been using Sonar for what feels like 100 years. Not once have I had my midi just die on me with repeated crashes. I actually never heard of anything like that being posted here before, but it's possible I may have missed it. If that NI piano plays through Kontakt, I've had so may problems with Kontakt, I don't even know where to start. That player just hates me or hates Sonar or something. I seem to be the only one that has issues with it though. Anyway, see if anyone answers you on here and if they don't, definitely call tech support if you can. If not, try mailing them. Here's the link to all the ways you can contact them. http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/contact/default.aspx Good luck and if by chance you fix this, please be sure to post back what this was and how it got fixed. Sorry I couldn't be helpful here....maybe someone else will chime in. -Danny

No, that has been helpful and I appreciate the time to reply. I'm in the UK unfortunately, but I have thought about contacting them but I was hoping to resolve the issue myself (well, almost myself :P).
The weird thing about the project is I'm not even sure that the Piano is at fault; it was actually the third instance of the Piano I was loading into the project, specifically to do the solo (which was the last thing I was going to be doing before the file was finished).
If I could just get into the damn file to extract the MIDI roll data out, I could then just re-build it from a blank project; but noooooo, the thing won't even open and I cannot think of any way of doing that.
If I manage to fix it myself, I certainly will post back; I'm not sure that's going to happen though unfortunately :(

Hi Steve, its a Friday evening here and i have some time to help. if you like perhaps you would want to PM me with the .CWP file and hopefully i may be able to extract the midi data for you. No promises though, however, am willing to try. the other thing i noticed is that you're on Sonar X1(a), perhaps you may want to update to X1(d).... BUT do finish and save all open projects before attempting. you'll never wanna upgrade mid-project.

Thank you Keyzs - I would really appreciate that.
I'm at work until well after your day would be over though unfortunately, but if it's OK to send it to you anyway I will do that. br> Upgrading was another thought I was going to try later on; I noticed a free trial of Sonar X2 on their website, which I thought I would try installing to see if it opens in that.

I see you're on X1(a). There were three more patches to X1, up to (d).
Maybe this has something to do with things ?

Thanks for the reply Paul; I'm gonna give that a go tonight just before I do anything else. I'm hoping it might help, but originally I had 1A installed and it caused issues so I went back to the default version. I'm also gonna give X2 trial a go just in case.

I have fixed this issue!!!!! I just want to thank everyone who replied, and for everyone's offer of help. It seems updating was the fix; I still don't fully understand what happened, but once I updated all the way to D I was able to open the file on my other machine. I removed the last (empty) VST that I added, just to be on the safe side, and re-saved this as a new file. I was then able to plonk it into my un-updated version and bingo; it worked perfectly fine. I've finished it now, too
