Ska guitar VST plugin?

Does anyone know of a freeware ska guitar VST plug-in anywhere?

Or better yet, which CSC or TTS guitar could be tuned (via the properties) to sound like one?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

For a realistic sounding guitar a midi based instrument is not ideal.  It will never sound like a real guitarist with a real guitar. Even folks who don't play a guitar will spot it a  mile away.

Sampled guitars can get closer. However, unless it provides the articulation, it too will sound fake in one way or another.

    Check out Real Guitar  http://vstguitar.com/realguitar/

    also Real Strat   http://www.musiclab.com/products/realstrat/audio.html

these are the better options available.  Still not perfect, but close enough for rock and roll.

    a guitar tuned to ska?

I don't understand - ska is a style, not a tuning.  you have to learn how to strum in ska style, not tune the guitar to a different tuning.

    this might help:

Please pardon my mistake. At the time I said "Ska guitar", I didn't know what the name of the guitar was. I know what Ska is.

I'm trying to compose a song in the style of 311 or Sublime...trying to, in turn, replicate the sound of that reggae guitar. I tried using all electric guitars in both CSC and TTS synths, but nothing that comes close. I also tried using bass guitars at a higher octave but that doesn't sound anything like it either.

I wonder if there's a VST plugin out there offering reggae guitar variants. I realize that most VST plugins are not an assortment of different instruments, but several tunings of the same instrument sound...

can you post a link or two of the type of sounds you're trying to get?  maybe that will help.

Sure! This is pretty much the instrument sound I'm trying to achieve:

    Sublime, "Santeria" (25-second mark)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEYN5w4T_aM
    Sublime, "Wrong Way" (27-second mark)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChV5BZ8SmS0
Miley Cyrus, "Party in the USA" (opening chords)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA
Matisyahu, "King Without A Crown" (13-second mark)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChV5BZ8SmS0

From my experimentation, I'm not able to replicate it with any electric or bass guitars in the TTS or CSC inventory...

Really that's a hint at PodFarm which has nice tones. The demo shown uses a multifunction Line 6 keyboard called the KB-37 which triples as a mobile keyboard, an audio interface, and as an essentially zero latency guitar input device with loads of good guitar sounds via the included software (PodFarm). The demo suggests an answer to your request.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Re: Ska guitar VST plugin? 2014/03/14 08:57:16 (permalink)
That is simply a guitar played with a reggae style to it.... very similar to ska.

I don't think a plug in will be able to do that for you very easily. You will need a real picker to get that. It's not so much about the sound...a relatively clean single coil sound....as it is the groove and the feel of the style being played.....in other words, technique.

If you can not play the guitar like that......or enlist the talents of a guitar player who can play that style and groove for you....the only other option I can think of that might even come close is to check out Band in a Box as it has over 3000 styles of music in it at the higher levels. It's sold in graduated packages.... from the basic to the high end.... the further up you go the more styles and real tracks are included, and the more it costs as a result. Packages vary from $130 to $670 so be sure to get the one that has the styles you are looking for because they add styles as the price goes up.

Think of it this way. If you have to hire a studio musician to lay down the tracks for you.... and you have to pay them, lets say, $100 for the session... at some point, not too many songs down the road, if BB/RB is suitable, you have broken even and now, the rest of the "studio sessions" are free.

The better packages have Real Tracks in them. Real tracks are just that...real players recorded in a studio. It's not like using loops. You can write in any key and use any chord pattern and it follows exactly what you do.

I know that reggae and ska like styles are included in some of the higher levels( I think it's close to 50 or so different reggae styles, maybe more).... you can go to their website and chat live with a rep and ask them at which level the reggae/ska styles you need are included. They are very helpful.

To know what the quality sounds like.... visit my music website (link in my signature) and listen to the music I record. Understand that it's country, but the reggae styles will have that same great level of quality. I know because I have messed around with snippets in that style. You are not locked into using the entire song .... you can export just the guitar track to add to your mix.... or use the other tracks as needed, bass, drums, keys, etc....... I tend to use a combination of BB real tracks with my live tracks from my studio.

Maybe that will be the exact thing you're looking for.

LAWAJAVA - Thanks for the recommendation, however it doesn't appear that PodFarm is what I'm looking for.

However -- silly of me to neglect to notice the Sound Packs available at the Cakewalk Store. I may have stumbled upon the instrument pack I'm looking for:

    DSF Guitars Expansion Pack

According to the demo, guitars 4 and 5 may be what I'm seeking for the particular project in question...
