Skrackfilmsproducenten new mix

I posted this song here last year, and have now done a new mix where the song is heard a little more. I have changed much in the mix (some sounds as well) so everything is a bit clearer. Well, maybe the drummers like the old version better... ;)

It is a song about a Horror movie producer that scare his wife, and he is sad she left him. I wrote it originally in 1993, did a remake last year and now a re-mix. I have struggled to find the right level for the bass volume in my songs, is the level ok now?

Take a listen to some swedish:

Nice remix on this. It would be interesting to hear and English vocals version of this. Good job. Nice instrumentation and the vocals are nice and clear. The picture you used fits right in on this song. Nicely done.

Thank you for your answer and for taking time to listen! I have thought of making an english version but haven't come up with a catchy translation yet. Maybe later.

New version is much better, and it's a very nice mix, but...
The vocals are slightly too buried for my taste. Maybe it's not a question of raising the vocals but more carving a hole for them in the mix.
Swede as well by the way, so that might be why I'm a bit sensitive on the vocals. The lyrics wasn't audible all the way.

I think this is very cool song because it is well arranged and performed.  I do think the lyrics could come up in volume a bit, but I don't care a whit about it being in Swedish.  I think it's fun to listen to a good song in any language.

    All the best,

Great stuff Lasse - I agree - vocals need to come up in the mix. Love the backing vocals - very tasteful

Notnat, Beltrom, Lynn, Daryl1968: Thank you all for taking time to listen and your encouraged comment! It got me going back to the mixing board. I still feel like a newbie in compressing, EQ and making a balanced mix. I "try and error" very much until I'm satisfied without knowing exactly what I'm doing. I guess the more I do the more I learn... Anyway most of you thought the vocals was too soft, so I tried to change volyme, raise compression, remove some reverb in the vocals, change EQ on piano, guitar and channel tooling. Every time it resulted in sounding like the background wasn't hearable and thin. I want everything to sound great (of course!) with a clear background harmonics and power in the lows. What method should I be using to accomplish this?

Always good to listen to music irrespective of the language of the vocal.  Perhaps a little less verb on the Vox may sharpen them.

You have dots over your "a". The beginning seems like a werewolf tune. But while I can't understand it, it doesn't feel scary? It kind of feels like a theme song from a TV sitcom? And that's not a bad thing. Those tunes are usually pretty catchy.

Well this is an interesting piece!Sure didn't end up going in the direction I thought it would.

Well, the bass and kick are muddied together, but there is definitely more bass than kick.  Both have got to 'hit you in the chest' (but more so, the kick).

The snare also gets buried at times, and the mix is over-all muddy.
The musicality of the piece is beautiful, mind you. That's great!  The instrumentation is absolutely fine, but is buried in the mix-mud. That mud is usually found in the 400hz range ... you can dip almost every track in that range and suddenly - WOW - everything will sit up.  The the other thing is learning to manipulate the EQ settings with more DIPS than BOOSTS.

I have a great help guide that a lot of people have resourced over the years - I mean a lot!  Nearly 12,000 downloads of one particular document called, "Mixing and EQ Guide - 2013" (v. 2013 is updated).  With it, you can perform magic.

Enjoy the guides, and please, continue to produce such interesting 'out of the regular box' pieces.  Well done in the composition end of things, for sure!

Back again after several weeks of sunny vacation. Thanks Wookiee, clintmartin, The Band19 and Flagrant Regard for your comments!

The Band19: The intro is supposed to image a trailer for one of his fright movies. A bit MJ-inspired...

Flagrant Regard: Thank you for your detailed thoughts, this is what I need! I will try cutting in the 400Hz as you said and maybe return later with another version.

    Hej Skräckfilmsproducenten!
Wonderful melodies, unpredictable chord progressions, together that rythmic feel - it's just awesome!
The mix is good, perhaps a bit overcompressed, lacks some dynamic and perhaps stereo panning as well.
    Small nits though!
    Bra jobbat!

I too would like to hear more vocals (a bit louder or a bit sharper, one or the other), and a bit less bottom end in a few instruments would help clear up the mix. A great song.
