Slate Digital VCC - 1 Week sale
http://www.slatedigital.com/shop/home.php?cat=249 Having not used these things a question many may ask including me: How are these things 'game-changers'? What do they do better or add that makes them worth it? Cheers

"game changer"? $150 for a channel strip PLUS an iLok...whatever the "game" is, you just lost. I've heard the demos where they show you how much "warmer" everything sounds through the console emulator, but to me the difference sounds like simple compression. (Tip: just listen to the above-linked demo without watching the video. The reviewer's description made me laugh out loud.)

Well, it's probably just because I own and use the VCC on all my stuff now;-) but It doesn't sound like "compression" to me. I really like how the VCC sounds, especially driven. But, admittedly, it is not only subtle but subjective as well.

Subtle and subjective, for sure. Watch the video I linked to above. The improvement is subtle but perceivable -- if you're watching the bypass indicator. But minimize the browser and just listen; it's next to impossible to discern when the snare starts "popping out of the speakers" and "the guitars lift up and are definitely wider". I'm glad you like it, ol' pal. But po' folk like me need more bang to justify parting with our carefully-rationed bucks.

@4:41 "It's a very hard thing to describe what it's doing". Haha! Disclaimer: I own the VCC.

You can't go by online comparisons. You need to work with it in your own project to tell what's it's doing on your material. I hate the phrase 'game changer' & wouldn't consider it to be one. Just like any good comp, eq or fx it's a great tool have in your arsenal. I have the others mentioned too & they're not in the same ballpark.

1: "until now if you were looking for the sound of a large analog console in your mixes, you had to be mixing on a large analog console". That's what all developers of similar plug-ins will tell you. 2: "as soon as this thing gets on, you can hear that there's more..." I actually listened without watching, like I often try when it comes to such comparisons. The first time he turned it on, I couldn't really tell. Music isn't a constant static noise - the changes in sound and dynamics when the song shifts from one chord to another and as instruments and voices come in and out probably make more difference. At times, you can think something got turned on, but it's just that the bass hits the fundamental or that the guitar moved to a different chord and created "space" below. One's hear could probably be tricked into believing that some device has been engaged at that point and continue hearing it through the song, because it's what it's paying attention too - more "bass", more "air" more mojo... The second time, I either heard it or guessed it. With the API model, I heard a slight difference. A bit more low end. I guess to be fair I'd have to try it for myself - but it's not something I'm really after and it's iLock protected, so that's even bigger savings for me.

Ha ha...that's hilarious. I too listened without watching and heard absolutely no difference. Then to hear the commentator remark about how obvious it is when it's on. Hee hee...

I own both VCC and FG-X from Slate. FG-X is stunning (IMO). Case in point. The other day Phil asked me what plug I used on some drums. He was hoping to get "that sound". I had to tell him all I did to the sonf was add FG-X on the master buss. VCC leaves me cold.

Nice to see the comments on the VCC. I think I'll pass for now. FG-X is an excellent plugin. I can now use very light compression and still get that loud sound that everyone wants these days but without sound degradation. Jim

I watched the video and here are my thoughts......I've recorded over the years on an API, Neve, SSL, and a Trident....and the differences between the boards are way different than what I'm hearing on this plug. I'm only going by the video, however.....I think Slate is pretty arrogant about the whole thing...making fun of his partner's french accent....wow, that's really hilarious, wtf? I have alot of the Slate drum libraries.....my ears tell me "one trick pony"......maybe the plug is no better, lol?

Well...I'm fairly certain that Fabrice and Steven are the best of friends and poke fun at each other all the time. Plus, Fabrice was giving as good as he got regarding Steven's incessant pestering. I listened without looking when that test video first came out and it's not hard to hear a very pronounced difference when the VCC is enabled. Because it's LOUDER. And warmer. And fuzzier. Bapu did an interesting test where he kept all volumes constant enabling and disabling the VCC and it was MUCH harder to tell which was which. Which, I assume, is why he is "cold" on it. But that is not the real point of this plug. It is supposed to emulate a console that is driven to slight saturation. That means make it louder. That said I like the extra drive and warm gain you can get on your tracks and mixes. I honestly do think it does.....wait for it....glue them together nicely. Just my (probably deluded) two cents.

Trying to get more info on this from the Slate site......I see a drive knob and a knob for input and output.......great......imagine if the plug had the eq of these consoles....that's what I would miss
