Sliding on Scarbee Rick Bass
I have three Scarbee basses: J-Bass, P-Bass, and Rick. I love them all. One question about the Rick (my favorite): The somewhat cryptic directions for creating a slide articulation say this: "To trigger a slide, play a note legato while holding the sustain pedal pressed." I think this means: play a note, hit the sustain pedal, and then play a slightly second note so the first one slightly overlaps it. I can't get this to work. I've tried putting the sustain even before note 1, on note 1, slight after note 1, and right in-between notes 1 and 2. I have quantized the notes and also tried making note 1 a few ticks longer so it overlapped. I have also tried this in different ranges, all of which would be possible to slide on a physical bass. Any ideas? PS No issues with the other articulations, so I must be doing something simple wrong.

I have the Rick bass but haven't used it yet, however I do recall having similar articulation problems with the other Scarbee basses, in that something described in the manual simply didn't work as described, at least in the way I thought it should. It might however be a case of not fully understanding how the virtual playing hand works - this thread may or may not be relevant to you, but it does include some interesting insight from the creator of the script himself: http://www.native-instrum...ly-not-working.186584/

Sharke-man, That thread may actially help. I may need to use a keyswitch to force the bass to stay on the same string. I will mess around and report back. These are the details that slow down mixes—last minute ideas for improvements..

I tried to get that to work and couldn't, so I ended up figuring out how to make the Classic Bass instrument from the Kontakt 5 Factory Library sounds do it, and I switched out the bass sound to the Kontakt one. Sorry that's not any help - I am just commiserating with you on the challenges of doing it with the Scarbee. Bob Bone

Hi, Konrad. Although I don't know if I've tried it yet with the Rick, that's exactly how it works with the other Scarbee basses. Check your string selection to make sure the note you're trying to slide to can be played on that string. When it hasn't worked for me, that's been the reason. Say you're trying to slide down to a low E, but you're starting on the A string. It can't be done in the real world, so Scarbee has it programmed so it can't be done on his basses - at least not by default. Maybe there's a setting that allows for this, but I haven't come across it. The thing to do would be to have the slide start on the E string, so it can end on the E string. Hope this helps.

Thanks, by the way - I didn't know how to do the slides on Scarbee, so I guess I will give it a shot. Bob Bone

Hey, guys. I did try the keyswitch to force the string selection and still didn't have good results. I will try again with a fresh mind and maybe I will see what's wrong. By the way: • If Scarbee says "A0" for example, does that mean "A2" to Sonar? I tried keyswitches in different octaves and I think Scarbee is two octaves below Sonar nomenclature. • Are the keyswitches meant to be held down? (This varies by manufacturer and function.) Thanks!

The Scarbee was my "go to" bass until I did the EB5 expansion pack, where I recorded slides specifically so I could insert them like notes However, there's a way to "cheat" with bass slides. Use pitch bend, but quantize pitch bend messages not for best resolution, but to a value where each "step" of the slide creates a half-step pitch change. You can't always get it perfect, but a slide goes by pretty fast and you will hear the non-continuous slide sound associated with sliding over frets.

Hi, Konrad. Not sure if it's A0 or A2, but, if I recall correctly, selecting the A string would be done by playing the A in the octave below the low E note. Also, not sure about holding the key down, but, if you program it to play at the same time as the note the slide is starting from, it should work.
