Janet -- thanks, fun is good

Shad -- thanks for the listen and the comment, glad you enjoyed it

Larry -- many thanks. I'm still kind of tentative in a few places on the guitar .. but it was different and fun to do.

After listening this morning the mix seems to me a bit clumpy and crowded in the middle, so I'll be working up some refinements and will repost if I make significant progress.

Nice. Guitars recorded well, hard to do with acoustic slide. Like the brief sax in the back.

If I could own only one instrument, it would be an acoustic guitar... This song, very eclectic. (normally I don’t enjoy Irish music)

    Horns in the back?

    Slide?

    Strings?

    That funky percussion?

    A ray alternative lifestyle feel?

But it all seemed to fit together cohesively kinda Bob Marley meets the bayou?

Well now that is different Bill, a real melting-pot of styles and influences going on. Like David Gilmour jamming with Burning Spear and Dr John..how cool is that?
Lovely tone on the lead acoustic that comes in later on. So, how did this one start Bill, with that reggae groove?

Mark -- thanks a bunch. The guitar has a fishman pickup (piezo) and is recorded direct. The sax line started out as a prominent part of the piece but took more and more of a background role as guitars were added. Snip, snip.

Tom -- thanks, glad you found it enjoyable.

Robby -- it's funny, I don't set out to go eclectic on purpose, but often end up there just from following whatever whims move me for the song. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not . Glad you enjoyed it.

James -- many thanks. This one started with the bass strings and other stringish things as a kind of a purposeful foundation to jam over. Tried a few things with the sax patch, then broke out the acoustic and slide, and added the reggae chords to cap things off and underscore the rhythm. I am hoping to work the slide parts (maybe some compression and spatial fx) to bring them up in the mix a little more if I can.

    Hi Bill,
did listen to this the other day and caught a vibe I couldnt shake off
after repeated listens today / now I feel I'm ready to give you a little feedback

I'm not realy getting the whole "Reggea Genre" that everyone is making refrence to
    I bee hearing something else
    imo "Slippery Slope" ...
has more of a "Save My People from the Oppresor Powers that be" type of vibe going on for it....
the slide playing that you are doing on acoustic has more of a Field Call style / vibe to it
the acoustic grtr under the slide tone is almost a Middle Eastern / Oud sound
I honestly got more of a Tibeten Exodus fleeing to safetly vibe rather than a Jah Rastafeee (sp) vibe

have you ever heard Mingus's tune Freedom on Mingus Mingus Mingus ?
the vocals and choir reminds me of Slippery Slope ...the vibe message and feel
for giggles I played them one after the other , Freedom then Slippery Slope
this was in interesting little listen .....
and the I superimposed Mingus 's spoken intro over your tune by simply playing both tunes at the same time ...whew aside from a few sync ups it was uncanny how well they seemed to go together ....
anyway......... Bill I did enjoy your song as it was recorded
I just cant help myself with sone of the places music brings me to

    Kenny .....

Oh, man I loved all those sounds!

Is that a dobro sliding up and down?
Very infectious groove and pleasant allllllll the way.

    Thanks for sharing.

I don't know Bill..that was just plain fun. I know I had a crazy grin the whole cut.

Don't know if you did finger tapping on the back of an acoustic...I did that one time for bongos on a Beatles tune...crazy.

And there is some very slick picking going down.

    Excellent.

    Dean -- lol, Thanks.

Kenny -- I'll have to get a copy of that tune and check it out. The only Mingus I have heard are some of the tunes that Joni Mithcell did, but even then only a few and they were covers/interpretations. My local library loans CDs, I'll have to drop by and see if they have some Mingus. Thanks for the listens and the cool encouragement. Good to see you on the forums again too.

Rick -- no, not a dobro, just a Tacoma acoustic, glass slide, recorded direct. I did use a little distortion on during mixing though, Voxengo Boogex, great freebie. Thanks Rick.

Michael -- thanks, made my day. Yes, I have tried tapping the body for percussion, tried paper clips between the strings for sitary harmonics, violin bows, lots of zany things just for fun. Speaking of tapping, check this guy out if you haven't seem him before, EriK Mongrain, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb9cidk0Bfs, also Andy McKee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4&feature=related.

    Hi Bill,
Yeah , I miss you guys
my current vacation from the forums started off well enough
a dose of daily learning and practice on my gtr
after a while it got fugly ....I lost my focus
and turned my musical absence into an exercise of arm chair music production from the looney binn

I got to come back even if it's only to spank our mutual bud Larry with some new tunes

send me an e-mail at .....my screen name @ yahoo.com
I would be happy to send you the tune .....

Great stuff...and yeah, the Voxengo Boogex is actually pretty amazing as a freebie. Still, what's even better is the subtlety with which you applied it. Just enough tone there, man...very well done!

A good listen. I can hear where others are coming from on the Reggae with the first few bars, but after that, I agree with Kenny, as you deftly change the whole picture.

My one nit is the bongo/conga (?) sound. I think maybe a spring verb...or maybe they are too dead center...or maybe they fad too much in parts...not sure...but think you might try something else there, since they can really add to the overall feel. Nice feel on the playing.

    Well done!

Dazed -- thanks much for the listen and the kind words.

Tom -- thanks, so glad you enjoyed it.

Mark - thanks, man. Boogex is a great freebie (I am a big Voxengo fan in general). I appreciate the comment on the hand drums. I have been trying different things with hand percussion sounds 'played in' from the keys, of course I have much to learn but am learning and having fun along the way. Thanks.

This is excellent (not exaggerating). It is extremely remeniscent of the video game music from Monkey Island 3 (Curse of Monkey Island). That music had an island feel. Your music has a western town of similar weirdness.

Great drudgery rhythm (like 16 Tons). It's got a groove you can play a video game to. Capitol, capitol.
