Slowing down single audio track

Hi – maybe someone here has done this…
 
I am trying to take a short guitar riff from a recording and slow it down so that I can “learn it”… it is standalone – I copied the guitar riff from a song – it fills a measure with no other instrumentation playing but the guitar. I would like to analyze the notes. It’s a very fast riff so I’ll need to play it back at half the speed. Can I do this in sonar? Has anyone had luck attempting this?
 
Any insight would be appreciated.

    You can simply stretch it by 50% and it will still be somewhat in tune at half speed.

    You can also use something like Melodyne which will output MIDI notes if you ask it too.

    If you set up a grid you can even output a crude staff view.

    Hi Manny, you can make the clip a "groove clip" by right-clicking the clip and choose "groove clip looping". Then you lower the bpm for instance from 120 to 60 and the clip will play back slower.

    Thanks - both of you. It was quite easy using the groove clips. So yes, I did slow it down. Of course I still can't get it together and play the riff but that's my limitation. Thanks - the help was exactly what I was looking for.

    The groove clip and the stretch use the same math.

    If you make a copy and Bounce it to Clip you can use the offline render math which usually sounds smoother and possibly more accurate.

    Thanks Mike - the problem is also compounded by the fact that the guitars appear to be doubled and playing harmony - it sounds like one of those riffs that is designed to irritate guitarists. It's a riff from a Ventures song called Panhandle Rag (it comes in around 1:15). I love this version but just can't nail it. If you're curious, check it out:

    The little turn around?

    I might be able to play that by ear on any given day... but figuring it out is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

    I think it's 3 quick hammer on runs.

    I'll bet you if you PM spacey... he'll tell you exactly what notes to play.

    Yeah - I know it's insane to get hung up on this but it really freaks me out to hear something that I cannot decode... faking it is an option of course, but being that it's just for me (I don't play out) I will always know I'm faking it. It's silly really - a pet project but it does amaze me that I can't find anyone that knows exactly what these guys are playing (I've searched all over the net) and no matter what i do, I can't get it sorted out. Thanks for the input!
