I've always thought Dolly was a happy, down-to-earth person and this thread had me reading a bit about her.  How can you not like someone who takes life like the following?
 
 

Parton has turned down several offers to pose for Playboy magazine, although she did appear on the cover of Playboy's October 1978 issue wearing a Playboy bunny outfit, complete with ears (the October 1978 Playboy issue also featured Lawrence Grobel's extensive and candid interview with Parton, representing one of her earliest high profile interviews with the mainstream press). The association of breasts with Parton's public image is illustrated in the naming of Dolly the sheep after her, since the sheep was cloned from a cell taken from an adult ewe's mammary gland. When Parton was asked whether she minded being an eponym in this way, she joked, "No, there's no such thing as baa-ad publicity."
 
She has had plastic surgery. On a 2003 broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Winfrey asked what kind of cosmetic surgery Parton had undergone. Parton stated that she felt that cosmetic surgery was imperative in keeping with her famous image, but jokingly admitted, "If I have one more facelift, I'll have a beard!" Parton has repeatedly joked about her physical image and surgeries, saying, "If I see something sagging, bagging, and dragging, I'm going to nip it, suck it and tuck it. Why should I look like an old barn yard dog if I don't have to?" and "It takes a lot of money to look this cheap."

It's a great song. It comes straight out of the Appalachian porch playing tradition.
 
You can almost hear the wash board scraping (the snare pattern) at the original 45 speed and you can hear a bodhrán (the congas) figure in the slower version.
 
The lyrics and story line remind me of the songs describing lonely wives and wandering sailors as often performed by the southern mountain high land folks.

I believe it really is Dolly slowed down, although I guess it would be quite easily confirmed by someone who has the original and can slow it down. Best results with the original 45, of course!

I think DP's great...yes she has not been taken seriously enough in Europe - when I was growing up in the UK I don't think I ever heard her mentioned if the subject wasn't large breasts. She was seen as a bimbo with a singing career, which of course could not be farther from the truth. It was only when I got older that I realized what an incredible singer she is, and such a warm genial person to boot. I always thought she was a fine ambassador for America.

And what a voice - I never liked "I Will Always Love You" until I heard the original Dolly Parton version (I believe the movie clip with her singing it to Burt Reynolds is on YouTube). So much more genuine and soulful than the Whitney Houston version.

I just did it in Adobe Audition and it's uncanny.
