Smoke, by Rik Frieling and me (now w/less reverb - 6/2)
I hope I haven't posted this before. If I did, it's been a long time. I think I'm finally happy with it now. Rik's composition...I played along. Crits welcome. And thank you! http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=789731&songID=13137181 Reduced the reverb, evening of June 2. Thank you all!

Wow, really nice musicianship by both of you........had a bit of that flamenco feel to it as well.....very, very nice. The verb however, was a bit too much on the guitar (possibly other instruments) and it seemed to muddy up this otherwise wonderful piece of music. (Possibly the synth strings + guitar verb made it sound a bit over-verbed.....IDK??) Please take this slight crit with a grain of salt........this is just how it translated on my H-phones.

Thanks so much for that. I'll go back and see if I can fix that without screwing up anything else. :) Sure do appreciate it!

Love the musicianship and great piece. Production seems pretty good to my ears. I highly respect Mesh's production opinions however for this genre I would have to vote the ambiance on the nylon was nice choice and level.

Another beautiful song, Janet. I agree with Mesh on the reverb. It diminishes the beautiful finger picking and blend of piano and string. Keep the verb, just lower the mix a bit and you've got a gem.

Thanks Grant. Eenie, meenie, minie, mo... :) Thank you, Lynn. Lower the mix a bit? As in just turn down the volume? Not sure I'm following you...

He means lower the volume of the reverb Janet. I really like what you both did. The playing is really good. The melodic structure is also very good. It carries a lot of emotion between the two of you. I would pan the piano a bit more to the right so it helps the stereo image of it better. Guitar is perfect. Just backoff the reverb overall - this production does not need so much of it. Nice job.

The more I listen the more I wished you lived next door...lol Perhaps at some point you could play piano on a tune or two that I have in my head but never found the piano player I needed for that song. Best of luck with all your music Billy

Thank you so much, Rimshot. Once I opened up Sonar, that made more sense, but your directions certainly helped! I panned them both a little more and brought the reverb down quite a bit. Can't believe I didn't hear that before. Well, I can (believe it). But I wish I would have. Thanks Billy. Back in the day (a few years ago), I was that girl...did quite a few collabs around here. Now it's all I can do to drag out a few old ones and try to polish them up. Maybe some day... Another question for anyone...does this seem compressed enough? It's way 'wavier' than other files I see. I use Ozone's 'loudness maximizer' and I guess that used to do the trick, but perhaps I'm not using it right. I can use the Sonitus Compressor and that will do it but I often wonder if that's a good idea....(to use it in addition to Ozone). So...new mix up as of June 2, evening. Thanks again so much! You guys are the best!

Janet, this new mix is excellent and everything was much more clearer (verb-wise....at least to my amateur ears). Your panning them both worked really well and it translated beautifully on my h-phones....magnifique!!!!! Listened to it 3x and was a really nice way to start the morning off with this (of course with a good cup of coffee as well) :)). Of note, don't listen to what OhGrant said about 'highly respect Mesh's production opinions'.......them are blasphemous fighting words.

Ah, music to my ears! Thanks so much! I really can't express how much I appreciate you guys helping me in specifics like this. I know I can't contribute much so it means even more. Thanks again. So glad you enjoyed it. I owe most of it to Rik and his amazing skills on the guitar and composition.

I love this one Janet. I think you both did an excellent job on it! I didn't hear the earlier version, so I'm not sure how different it sounded before. I think the reverb is pretty good now. The only small nit I can hear is the underlying guitar part. Some might prefer the "cascading" effect on the guitar in the background...I think it sounds a bit busy to my ears..I would probably either slow it down to 1/8 notes or remove it all together since the guitar and piano sound so good together. The guitar cascade seems to make it too busy in the background in my opinion...and another reason possibly that getting the right reverb is difficult...when you have a part like that going through reverb it can be tough to make it sound clear with the notes moving so fast..one possible fix is simply to buss less reverb to that track. Very nice!

Thanks for stopping by again Lynn! :) Thanks Tim. I'm afraid I (or Rik) can't change the guitar part now. And I believe part of the strings part is on the same track. (It's been so long I can't remember how each of us recorded our parts.) Are you saying I should put even less reverb on that track? Rimshot: to you too. :) Thank you, Glen!
