Snap To Grid - Staff View

Hello Cakewalkers.

I recently upgraded from Sonar LE (came with V-Studio 100) to Sonar Professional. Quite a bit of difference, especially when trying to use the Snap To Grid in the Staff View. In the LE version, when you chose Staff View, you would get a toolbar allowing various snap properties, note durations, etc. Professional's Staff View has no such thing, at least that I can see (although Piano Roll has a separate Snap To Grid dropdown).

When trying to do something simple, like create a high hat on every beat of a 4/4 measure, I can click the note but it rarely Snaps to the 1/4 note. Unless I hit it perfectly, it is usually just a little off. I open the "Display Resolution" to 1/32 and I see where I am off and then I have to move the note to the proper position.

I have the Snap To Grid at the top set to 1/4, the note duration at 1/4, the Display Resolution set to 1/4. the 'magnetism' set at extreme, yet it continues to do this. It appears to work fine in Piano Roll, but I prefer using the Staff View. Am I missing something? I've searched the forums but there seems to be little info on this, especially for Professional.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this problem obviously slows down composition time.

Thanks,

Jim Gore

    Hi Jim,

    First, the snap function on the control bar has nothing to do with the staff view, the staff view snap function is completely separate from the rest of the program.   Second, in Kingston, the latest Platinum update, the snap function doesn't work at all.  The good news is that whatever value you choose for note inputting will snap to the correct spot, more or less, so the snap function is barely even needed.  I have reported this bug, but it really is a bug that has almost zero impact on composing, as long as you place the note pretty close to where it's supposed to go.

    As far as note inputting is concerned, I highly recommend key-binding (hotkeys) the various rhythmic values, for example:

    w = whole note
    q = quarter note
    shift-e = dotted eighth note
    ctrl-s = triplet sixteenth note

    This really will speed things up a lot, instead of using the mouse to select a rhythmic value from the menu, which Cakewalk uses to replace the note-value icons in earlier pre-X versions.

    Sincerely,
    Jerry

    Thanks Jerry,

    I have to say I'm going to miss that functionality from the Sonar LE version I was using.  It was a painless process (I had to upgrade because I lost my computer as well as other stuff in a flood).  I'm also going to miss the vocal strip (unless it's there in Professional and I just haven't found it).

    I'll give the hotkeys a try. Anything to speed up the process.

    I have read a few posts on the forums about the problems with the staff view, though not necessarily the problem I'm having. I'm not a "note snob" or whatever they were called...it's just easier for my mind to comprehend what I'm doing when I use the Staff view and with LE note inputting was a 'snap,' pun intended.  I might try using the Piano Roll view instead. It has its own snap tool which makes me question why the Staff view doesn't have one. I played around with the Step Sequencer today....I doubt I'll use it much.

    Oh well, everything has its learning curve. It just sucks when you are also having to study Security+....too much for my old brain.

    I really appreciate the response, Jerry.

    Be well.....
