Snare mic position?

I got a snare.

It sounds pretty good to me.

I got a mic.

I put it near the snare head.

It seems to emphasize the "wood" with a deep rich sound. Sometimes I wish it sounded snappier.

I was jamming with some folks Saturday and I was drumming and someone had to sing so I sang while drumming.

I was singing through a SM58 and had it jacked up with serial compression in SONAR.


My snare sound freaking awesome coming through the vocal mic as "bleed".

Oh my.


Now I want to run my snare spot mic 2 feet away from the snare and "off-axis" too.








Does it ever get any easier?

I'm gonna find a new place for my official snare mic.

Hey mike .... If you don't all ready know about this google ..glyn johns drum recording ... 


I've was experimenting with t yesterday ... I must say I am impressed ... 


It uses three mics .... There is you tube videos all over .. One with even Glyn John himself ... 

Three mics ... It's pretty neat ... I am going to post a sample of my drum kit using it latter

I do really like the overhead sound, and that is why I think I'd like the spot snare mic to have more *snappy character* and a less full tone. The OHs have plenty of the full tone.

I happen to have a spare 414 and have been planning on setting up a bottom mic ( I'm a minimalist trying to outfit the room for modern expectations of lots of spot mics so I'm trying to evolve) as matter of practice.
I give that mic recommendation some special attention.

I'm a strong believer in where it sounds right rather than any idea of where it is 'supposed' to be.
 
The 414 is where I like to get some extra sparkle/sizzzle from around about the same frequency region your hi-hat sweet spot is, you then get some nice subtle rhythmic interplay between the hats and the snare on your ghost notes.  It also helps keep the high-frequency snare content seperate from any 'verb effects you might apply to your snare sound elsewhere. 

Where do I position the mic on my Alesis DM-5 Electronic Kit?

I wish I could afford a 414. Where do you guys get your money from? That would answer my drum sound question the best. 

I found a 414 at a pawn shop in London ON...seems to work well...
