So I downloaded the X1 demo - initial response

So I downloaded the X1 demo and I thought I’d share my initial thoughts.  First it’s a GREAT idea.  The idea of things being in easily managed and predictable places is wonderful.   I think it’s a great direction.

My download experience was easy and quick.  I started loading my files to test them.  I loaded a VST that I know needs to be reinstalled.  It doesn’t work properly in 8.5 but it crashes X1.  So perhaps it has stability issues still.

I was using it on my laptop (1366x768 resolution) and I could only get 2/3 of the control bar visible and the Console only about 2/4 of the height.  I couldn’t figure out any way to scroll other than the scroll bars and this was a major issue.  I have to go back and forth between my desktop and laptop daily and this is a real pain.  My resolution is not great for a Laptop but it's very common.

As I said my initial response was this was a good direction BUT I’d have to stop production and relearn virtually everything!   Everything is different.  I could not intuitively figure out anything easily.  Cakewalk has taken away most choices and forces me to use it their way.  Maybe their way is better, I don’t know, but I don’t have time to start from scratch.  I’m very busy (knock on wood) and I can’t understand why they would make a product that would require long time users to start over.  I’d actually like to buy it but I’ve got work to do. Just thought I'd share.

If you decide to take the plunge, I believe you will be very pleasantly surprised at how quickly you learn X1.

It might seem like they are asking you to re-learn everything from the ground up, but that is not the case at all.

Play with it.  I predict in one week you will not only learn it, but you will appreciate that it is the better way to go.

Yeah, Just don't do it while you're working on a project. I found the frustration unbearable while trying to get something out the door. Play with it on the side for while :)

Please post specifics on what you're stuck on, we've all gone through the same things and can probably save you tons of time.

That said, I picked up most of X1 very quickly. Do yourself a favor and create a new or dummy project to practice with. Starting clean helps a lot, migrating projects over can introduce new gremlins to chase down and that gets a little distracting.

+1 on most of the above points. When I first started using it I thought why have done this? Why have they moved that? But once I got going it all made sense, or it did to me.

Didn't take long but it is 'different' to early versions, but IMHO in a good way.

I've only loaded 8.5 once since and quite frankly it wasn't an enjoyable experience. YMMV of course.

    Cool Thanks.  How do you:

    Easily scroll the console up/down?
Make all console strips narrow at once?
Have everything I need on the control strip at once - I can only fit 2/3rds on screen - this one seems impossible.

I've assigned 'W' to widen all strips and 'N' to narrow. works for me but then I use a CS so don't need 'W' on the qwerty.

Can't help easily with the other too as it isn't a problem for me but I'm sure someone will know the answer, if there is one.

Try using Screensets. Console strips can be narrow in one and wide in another.

    ...Easily scroll the console up/down?..

WizMouse - Free app which is fantastic.  As the company which makes it says, it literally gives your mouse the functionality it always should have had.  Move your cursor anywhere on your screen, and without clicking, That's what has focus and your mouse wheel will scroll.  Instant vertical scrolling in the Console View, as per your question.  No more constant clicking to give focus, no more a slave to scroll bars.

For the Tool bar,  Just move what you use to the left side and close-out what you dont use as a last resort but screen sets are nice as well.  Check out some of the videos CW has in the University

So when you add a VSTi where does it go?  It doesn't show up in the track view.

Select the tracks you want to change.  While holding down the control key, set 1 of the I/O for 1 of the tracks to the device/FX/etc you want and they are all reset.

Just to add to lorneyb2's advice to change all tracks at once, deselect all tracks and then hold ctrl key and change setting. Works with just about all controls now.

Somebody put together a great document to help SONAR users learn Reaper. What a great idea - teaching from the perspective of a familiar framework. Somebody really ought to do that for SONAR users migrating to X1.

Sorry, but the Getting Started videos - though very nicely done - are a marketing tool, not a tutorial. It's not aimed at experienced users who can probably figure out how to insert a soft synth on their own but are wondering where the interleave buttons have gone.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Imagine somebody came into your kitchen and rearranged everything, so you had a hard time finding what you wanted. But you can still cook a great meal because everything is still there, same pans, same stove, same ingredients, same cook. Yeah, it might take you alittle while to make the meal, but it will still be as delicious. And your next meal will go even quicker. For some great X1 cooking tips, check out groove3.com

X1 is great but it is really not a perfect fit on a 768p screen. You can choose the 'compact EQ' option on the Pro Channel and switch out modules on the Control Bar and the Console, but it's far from an ideal solution. On my new 17-inch 1600x900 laptop it looks great (well, after Panu's Darkside mod which I'm pretty well addicted to) and works very well.

And this works well with X1? I'll have to check that out...I wonder why they can't build that into Sonar.
