So, can I just buy Sonar the old fashioned way?
So, can I just buy Sonar the old fashioned way? If the only option is to buy a membership that can expire then I'll never buy any cakewalk product again.

Sure, the upgrade currently is $149. A single payment like every version before and the license does not expire, just like every version before.

Ok. Thanks, scook. I think I'll take a permanant pass on Cakewalk though. I get this nagging feeling that I'll accidentally buy something that expires, or they'll change their terms, and I just don't want to spend the time baby sitting it. It's become over complicated and just not worth the time.

The biggest difference if you upgrade now is that instead of getting only the features that were added since X3e was released, you get those features and a 12-month membership where you receive features, content, tutorials, etc. for the next year. Anything you acquire during the membership does not expire. You can pay all at once, or spread out the payments over 12 months. At the end of 12 months the membership itself does expire. If your membership expires, you won't receive new updates, features, etc. unless you renew - in other words, Cakewalk will continue to do yearly paid upgrades, like going from X1 to X2, X2 to X3, etc. However if you don't renew, everything up to that point is remains fully functional and permanently activated. It would be as if you had X2 but didn't upgrade to X3. This is not like the Adobe or Avid programs. You keep what you buy.

You've been told that paying upfront means the licence will NEVER expire. No company can change the terms of a contract - which is what this is. Can you honestly see Cakewlk turning around after say, 6, 7 months to all of thier users, "oh, by the way, your licecne is going to expire on the anniversary of your payment, even though you've paid for it"? That would be corporate suicide.

I am understanding the whole up front thing and would never consider the monthly payment plan, but what concerns me is: what will the price be in 2016, or a year later. I am sure they will still offer the choice to pay upfront or use monthly installments, but what is the cost going to be and is this what I have to look forward to every year...a $149.00 or more upgrade price. I am not complaining, just concerned, as in the past you knew what you were getting in an upgrade, but next year, if we keep getting the upgrades during our yearly membership, what will be new. Nothing, unless they withhold something or many things to make it appealing to all of us to upgrade again, or you are just buying into a membership that promises to deliver in the next upcoming 12 months. Cakewalk has never done anything that I perceived as "not in my best interests", as they have always delivered, but I am curious. I am an upgrader for sure, but I am curious how this will play out. I have not seen any other posts regarding this, so I have missed something, am over thinking it, or just stupid. Keep in mind I am a newbie with regards to real hands on...so I am blind anyway.

As I see it Cake are saying we are going to produce a product called SONAR that we will strive to constantly improve.
There will be no more new versions of SONAR just improvements and enhancements throughout the course of your membership.
You have a choice you can either buy into that membership by paying monthly or buy paying yearly your choice whatever you can afford. You can also buy in at the level of sophistication you can afford, i.e. Artist, Profesional or Platinum. There will also be add-ons that can be purchased if you so wish like the forth coming +10dB compressor and Eq from third parties and possibly even Cake themselves, but these would be things that would appeal to certain peeps and not to others. Like some of the Pro channel modules that had to be purchased separately from X1 expanded onwards. One thing to consider is that all previous versions of SONAR did not guarantee there would be fixes and or patches or and enhancements from one version to the next. Though they did they were not under any obligation to do so they just did. So the choice is yours you can join and enjoy the ride and instead of waiting from one year to the next for a new version. Cake can now concentrate on one product and just make it better. Thanks Cake and the bakers I like your plan.

This has been discussed. The current upgrade price is $199. There is a promotion going on now for $149. Cakewalk staffers have indicated the price for 2016 (and 2017) will also be $199. There could be promotions in the future but budget for $199.

Still trying to find out the definition of 'soon' will be on that offer. It would certainly help people budget their money to accommodate the purchase.

So...if they DID (which they won't) come out with a new release in 2016 and it was $300 for an upgrade for Sonar Platinum users, would that be any different than saying the membership fees where going up to $300? I think not in all reality. However, it has been stated they won't go to such a higher membership rate in 2016. 2017, who knows??.. But money wize...it isn't any different than a higher priced upgrade , than had been previous. Count your blessings you're not upgrading in ProTools.
People are really reading too much into this and think their glass is half empty, rather than overflowing full.

I got the upgrade when it came out last week and it feels solid just a few bugs that don't effect my work flow.. I am not asking this with any ill will or in a negative manner it's just a normal logical customer question. The one thing that I am wondering about is what if I decide not to upgrade every year. (I know I keep what I have) What will the cost look like to upgrade in two or three years down the road? Will I have to buy the last two years of upgrades as well as a new membership year?

I think they've said there will be incentive for people to buy straight at the end of the year - that might mean another promotion similar to this one? Otherwise it seems sensible to wait a few months after your year is up, to at least see when the next significant feature is added. I'm betting on a discounted "extend now" dealie.

I have gotten the impression (and the bakers may have even said as much), that since there are no more "versions" (e.g. X1, X2, etc.) that the renewal price will always be the same. As Sanderxpander noted above, there could also be incentives to renew when the membership expires.

I have only called Cakewalk 2 or 3 times over the years and not for product support issues, but my assumption was that if I had a product operational issue with, let's say, Sonar X1 today, I would be able to get some level of phone support if needed (although, I reckon the issue would more likely be solved by checking on the forum). My question is, with the new membership model going forward, is there any change in the support model for the version of Sonar you own if your membership ends or if it has lapsed?

We have a hard enough time dealing with the present so I'm not sure anyone could give you a definitive answer about what would happen 3 years into the future :-) However I think it would be fair to say that current members would get the best upgrade deal with lapsed members getting prorated upgrade rates. That's no different from the old model. You wouldn't be required to back pay for the previous years. Formatting fixed to make post readable.

I'm a little mystified that with this new model suddenly people are saying "but how do I know what the price will be 2 or 3 years from now?". Indeed, how do we know? Wait a minute, how do we know that the next upgrade of Cubase, or Windows, or anything, isn't going to suddenly cost 10 times more? We don't. It seems unlikely, since nobody would buy it if it did, but still, it's true, we don't know. How do we know that next year's iphone, or Audi, or anything, won't suddenly cost 10 times more? Why, for a wonder, again, we don't! We don't know how much any company is going to decide to charge for their product or service in the future, because we can't tell the future! We don't have a crystal ball! (at least I don't). News flash: nothing has changed! What we have is what we have always had, which is a great company that makes a great DAW for a pretty great price, and seems intent on continuing to do so for the foreseeable future. Personally I will continue to support them and pay for upgrades or membership or whatever you want to call it, as long as it continues to seem like a good deal to me. When they start charging what seems like an unreasonable amount, I will look elsewhere. Changing horses midstream because the one you're on might start looking like a loser at some point in the future, seems kind of crazy.
