The worst part is....I had SO MANY bugs in X1 that ruined my workflow that I never got to use it enough to find out if the current list of fixes will be enough.

Hopefully X1b will get me going far enough into the process that I can get something done while I make a list of things that need to be fixed.

Re:So did X1b fix your bug? 2011/03/21 14:50:34 (permalink)
Haven't checked everything, obviously, but here are a few:

Fixed:
- Set Measure/Beat At Now is entering tempo changes at the correct Now time!
- Universal snap value holding steady as I change to PRV or launch Step Sequencer.
- Control bar not disappearing after using Event Inspector, and hitting Spacebar to audition changes.
- Add MBT to Pool Option is now working (was always grayed out).
- Haven't checked much else.

Not fixed:
- Input echoed tracks go silent on rewind after recording (problem since going to x64 SONAR and drivers for my E-MU 1820).
- Velocity tails in the controllers pane do not change smoothly when drag-editing velocity of notes in PRV (this problem is peculiar to my DAW with 8600GT graphics - does not happen on laptop with cheapo onboard Intel graphics).
- Peak + RMS meter mode not saved for Record meters (setting is saved, but actual metering mode reverts to RMS only after re-opening saved project).
- Keyboard shortcut "P" does not open Preferences if a project is not yet opened, but Edit > Preferences does.

New issues:
- Cori Yarckin - Floating demo causes immediate dropout on playback - increasing buffer size does not help. Had no trouble playing back with 3ms buffer in X1a. Just discovered when I went to check the status of the PX-64 Attack bug, and have not done any troubleshooting yet.

I've stopped checking other things until I figure out the cause of this new issue.

EDIT: X1b did a white-screen crash after canceling the dropout warning pop-up. The more things change, the more they stay the same...

EDIT2: Hmmm.... don't know what the problem was, but the Floating demo is back to playing fine  with 3ms buffers after restart of SONAR. Audio engine must have gotten into a bad state somehow. This allowed me to check the PX-64 Attack bug, and it is not fixed. But none of the Not Fixed bugs I've listed were promised to be fixed in X1b, so I guess that's as expected.

But is it better than 8.5.3, or shall I wait a bit longer? A sincere question - I can't afford any issues in my studio.

The rhetorical question. Some users, myself included thinks it's better. Others think it's worse. It's an opinion not a certifiable fact.

There's only one way you'll answer that for yourself.

At least now it's working long enough for me to spend some time with it. Though that is now limited.

continuing with 8.5.3 and testing X1b. If I find it is stable I won't hesitate to run it in parallel with 8.5.3 until I'm totally familiar with it and happy that it's at least as reliable as what I'm using now.

First impressions

X1 still crashes randomly when opening projects started in 8.5.3

Until I get a handle on this, there's no way I can do any deeper testing

X1b seems to be able to co-exist with 8.5.3, unlike X1a

So hopefully running the 2 in parallel for a while might help me to sort things out

YES Absolutely! No question about!
I would never go back to SONAR 8.5, I have already uninstalled it. SONAR X1 are like night and day..even with small bugs!

If you still use SONAR 8.5 go a head and UPGRADE Today!!!

I like mixing in X1 much better then in 8.5 (3).  The things I do not like (maybe because I have not got the hang of it yet) is working in Staff View and Piano Roll View.   They appear both convoluted and confusing.  If you are just doing audio and/or mixing I believe X1 to be much faster and easier to work with.
Hopefully they worked out the stability issues with X1, if they did, I would say it is certainly worth the upgrade price.

My concern is that I don't want any "backward" bugs, meaning X1 affecting 8.5.3's operation, of which there have been some reports. I have the whole X1 downloaded, but not installed. Separate HDD I suppose then..

Has anyone noticed that you can right click on a single channel strip in CV and make it narrow. Yay!

Allows you to go and narrow only those channels you want. Shame you can't Ctrl click and multi select. i couldn't find any modifier to do multiples

I now prefer X1's PRV to previous versions.
Once I sussed the smart tool it's easy.....I'm just a bit annoyed that I keep having to track up to the control bar to change note lengths as I draw.

I have said it before in other threads that my pet bug was not fixed. The V-Vocal crash I experience.

Extremely disappointed.

Also I notice that X1 won't close properly by itself and always crashes on exit. By then who's bothered?

Re:So did X1b fix your bug? 2011/03/22 05:44:42 (permalink)
Twigman,
Hearing that you prefer X1 PRV over 8.5.3 gives me some hope that once I get more acclimated to the tools I will like it better as well.  With that said, my main two issues seem to be:
1- When I open PRV I try to drag a note, but all notes seem to be selected and linked by default.  The only way to unselect them is by clicking somewhere out of the PRV..this slows me down.
2- I cannot figure out smart tool CC drawing so I use the draw tool for this.  Lets say in the velocity lane, it will only allow me to change the velocitys for the notes that are highlighted.  In earlier versions I never highlighted anything, I went in and started carving out my velocity data at will, all over the place, with reckless abandon.  'Velocity freedom', if you will.
The extra steps one has to take is more frustrating than anything.  Totally killin my flow maaannn.

Re:So did X1b fix your bug? 2011/03/22 06:00:30 (permalink)
X1b seems to have fixed the disappearing Control Bar in the newly created X1b projects.

Although it did disappear on one occasion in a project created in X1, and then opened and modified in X1b. The Control Bar would disappear if SONAR was minimized or covered by other programs, and then re-animated or brought to forefront.

X1a had the problem of the Disappearing Control Bar almost every time the program was minimized.

Glad that's fixed even though it wasn't a huge deal, just very annoying and time consuming.

Another 3 or 4 hours and the download will finish, and then I can test a few things. I'm hoping that audiosnap is AOK and that various envelope/layer issues have been fixed.

PLease can someone help me out. In --->T and the Tools.
In tools menu many tools comes up but there are one tool that look like "snap values" "1/8, 1/4, 1/16 etc.." that you can select from Tool Menu.

WHAT IS IT FOR? It doesn't change any snap values either or have any logical function set to it? I can't find anything about it in the Manual either? What is it for?
Thanks in advance!

Even though CW claims the MIDI crosstalk bug has been fixed, it is not. Put two VSTi's that can send MIDI events out into two different tracks, enable MIDI output for both, press play and watch Sonar crash.

I also have X1 and the patches all downloaded, but not yet installed. I'd like to install both (8.5.3 & X1) on my sys....(after I reformat my OS drive I'll do a fresh install of X1). I currently have 4 drives...OS, projects, samples, and an empty 250GB drive.

Do you guys install 8.5 & X1 on seperate drives or all softwares on the OS drive? Or what's the best way to have both installed?

My concern is that I don't want any "backward" bugs, meaning X1 affecting 8.5.3's operation, of which there have been some reports. I have the whole X1 downloaded, but not installed. Separate HDD I suppose then..

Snap is now working probably, that was what was bugging me. I have never had too many problems with Sonar but my productions are not very complex, just a few audio tracks, soft synths and mixdown.
