mmmm..still has to know a few things about theory from the looks of what he was doing....iPads and such are neat little things.

I'd have to say yes...he still has to know the notes on the frets and the correct drums to strike and chords to play.  Beginner...or sophmore...but defintely a musician.  These are not loops he drug into the screen.  Sorry.  I sighed too:-)

Heh, I remember that!  No, I'm not THAT old, but I recall watching some show about a year ago that used video of the first time he plugged in and all the boos he received.  I especially recall how he wasn't affected by them at all as if he knew which way the future lay.

Those apps will breed a new generation of instrumentalist. That kind of technique is not easy to learn if you've played "normal instruments" for thirty years. The sensibility of touch alone is so different, you break the pad if get too emotional :o)

That's pretty cool... plus I think he's playing 8's on the Les Paul.

You mean these loops were so reluctant to appear he had to sedate them first or do you really mean he dragged them?

There was an article just yesterday in one of our local magazines that has a "Words" column about that very usage.  And, as an astute englishman such as yourself might imagine, we here in America have denigrated the language even further as "drug" is now accepted usage.  "Dragged" is still preferred but ol "drug" has been given a pass.  Similar to "hung" (no, not that particular usage) and "hanged".  I'm afraid it's been welcomed into the American lexicon as well.  Sorry, ol pal.

I thought the drum interface was especially cool.  The way I play midi drums it would not work out for me unless I could move certain instruments out of their normal place. (Kick drum mainly)

If people who make music from loops only are musicians... then this guy certainly is... and I do remember when Dylan was booed off the stage at the Newport Jazz Festival... the beatniks really disowned him for going electric, considered him a sellout for not staying pure with an acoustic guitar and bongos... The same people probably still have a 50 year old hairstyle... God save me from that. I make myself listen to current top 40.. you have to have a current ear I think. Though everything I listen to that has come out in the last few years has WAY more bass in the mix than I am comfortable with.... reminds me of when I first became aware of popular music. Console stereos were in style and were heavy on the bass. My cousin had one and I remember she played Streisand and "My Generation" on it.. a big long Motorola console, bass turned up treble turned down... didn't like it then, don't like it now.

Interesting stuff, and it seems to me to that maybe it's an extension of the American (?) habit of creating verbs from nouns.
 
I'm thinking of things like 'Googling' and 'To Xerox', and the rather awkward 'Medalling' - e.g. "He medalled in the last Olympics". Or the even more horrible 'Diarise' - for adding an entry to a diary.
 
Or how about 'Gifting' for giving someone a gift? Or let's 'Dialogue' when 'Talk' is much better.
 
There are lots of examples around, but it seems business use and sports commentary are rife with them.
 
And as for 'Hanged', I was always lead to believe that the past tense of Hang is 'Hung'; usually the word 'Hanged' is reserved for the act of putting someone to death on the end of a rope - more specifically in Britain the act of using a gallows and trapdoor combination so the victim's neck is broken, rather than being slowly suffocated to death.
