"Soft truths." he mixed it again... X2 mix 9/26

New original, it’s called “Soft truths.” I didn’t set out to write it? I am the vessel, and songs come to me, I’m just glad they’re still coming!

Mr. Markno999 collaborated with me on this gem.  I wrote it, and recorded it and then sent it to him for his opinion and to add a lead?

Well, he produced it, redid the drums (everyone likes his drums better) added some rhythm guitar, added some orchestration, did the solo, recommended the dobro in the beginning (which I added) and Mark did the mix.

He is the Seals to my Croft, he is the Garfunkel to my Simon, and I am proud to have him as a colab partner.

Submitted for your approval, I think it’s a monster hit?
At the top, “Soft truths.”

I believe we all have and live with "Soft truths..." Sometimes from us personally? And sometimes from others close to us.

I'm playing the Goodall 6, a Taylor 12, and a Warwick fretless. the bro is my Goldtone. Good mics and pre-amps, I know Mark's stuff is the shizzy as well. I did the piano in Ivory, and my strings were EWQL Gold, He redid the drums (I think with Superior?) I'm really pleased with how it turned out, but also very interested in feedback from the mix-masters :-)

Thanks Ed :-) This is the one I said "came to me?" When I was working on Gary's tune? It came on in and said "WRITE ME!! RECORD ME!?" And Mark is a freaking genius... Seriously. I wrote it? But he perfected it... Not saying it's perfect? But you know what I mean. Thanks again! We've worked hard on it :-)

And the bass my bass playing friend? :-) That's my fretless... That's a Warwick fretless thumb bass? And it's been set-up... And my friend? It is like an adult experience with your favorite actress, without the unintended consequences... I mean that bass? Well... "Mister president? FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!"

nice job on this track. calls to mind a bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bob Seger, which is always a great thing :)
guitar solo is tasty and reminds me of classic arena rock done the way it should be.  i think the slide guitar in the beginning can come up a db or two so we can enjoy it all the more.

    good stuff.

Cool song. I like it. It has a nice country rock feel to it.

Nice bass. The acoustic and dobro are nice too.

To my ears.... the vocals are a bit muffled which seems to be your default EQ setting on vox.  I'd personally like to hear a bit more crispness to the vox. Just a touch to add sparkle and air.

Other than that... man.... good job and a nice collab.

    Great job men!

Robby, well written tune as as per usual you have a unique, controlled and warm quality to your voice.

Great job on the orchestration percussion and melodic touches on this Mark, I know what your capable of.

Its all there in its glory, but I would say sometime in the future it still needs tightening with the beat, but thats a nitpick.

    Bravo guys. This is wonderful.
    nits:
I agree with Herb on the vocs.
I also thought the guit solo was a little busy for the tune.

great song, Rob, and I can deffo hear Mark's touch on this.  I enjoyed it's harkening back to the 70s...got a little "Tiny Dancer" off of it here and there before the chorus.

Some crits (as always, take them as they come):
-vocals are buried a bit, as per Herb and Tim. I think the reverb you are using needs a huge cut from the bottom end (maybe 500hz or higher)
-the placement of the dobro (?) in the intro could be moved off to the side so it doesn't clash with the acoustics (which are too loud the entire tune and require more HPFing)
-the swells at :35 are terrific
-there is a snare hit at 1:28 that sounds completely different from the rest of the hits and kinda interrupts the feel
-the string things at :50-53 are a great idea but they are too crisp: I would cut the highs pretty significantly to give them some distance
-the string riff at 1:19 sounds keyboard-y
-snare has little presence...it kinda comes and goes...needs more compression and some reverb to de-mono-ize it
-agree there is too much going on in the lead portion...I would get rid of some elements or do some drastic eq cuts if you want to leave them all in, and/or do some hard panning to make room for the lead
-the cymbals are too loud and in your face...I would do a lot of HPF on them to just make them fit

All in all, a stellar outing.

Nice song, however, I did not care for any of the drums. Sounded muffled to me and yes the cymbals were no low end or not really there just sizzle in high frequencies to me. Of course every playback system is different so I mention what was in my opinion a determent to the song with the drum sounds.

    Robby,

Thank you for sending me this song to work on and thanks a pant load for wasting my time, dude!
You hadn't even decided where you wanted my fiddle part to be yet you went on and finished it without me and didn't have the decency to let me know.  Please don't bother to send me any more of your songs to work on as I really don't have time for your nonsense. Just sayin'.

As for the mix, I agree, it needs work.

Scotty, I'm sorry :-( I know you're busy, it just moved on through the process after a couple of weeks and just happened. Would have been nice with fiddles? Because it has a pop country vibe to me? And that's what I was hearing in my head when I wrote it. But I didn't want to push, it's just a different flavor. Chocolate is good? Butter Pecan is good too. No offence was intended, please forgive me. Darn, I'm missing the dem convention? I wanted to see BJ (Bill Jefferson) Clinton!

Please don't be angry with me, it makes me physically ill "literally" when people are angry with me... My music is sad enough already.

Mark is tweaking the mix quite a bit based on the feedback (thank you mix masters!) I'll put a new mix up Thurs evening hopefully. Thanks again, with specifics to follow. Unless you're really really good at it? You can't really do it without input/feedback? Mark is really good at it, but others here are also, so we appreciate all of your opinions.

Robby/Mark this is such a fantastic song. So many elements played so well that keep the track busy with style.

I listened quite a few times as i enjoyed it so much, and i think this my new favourite of yours Robby, a great collaboration.

I really hope you both create lots more music together for many years to come.

Mr Markno999 did a pretty extensive edit based on a lot of the excellent feedback here. Thank you all for your input. I am not the guy to tell him if it's better or not, I liked the 1st version :-) I'll be able to listen to others on-line tomorrow as I've been having some issues this week which will be resolved tomorrow AM.

As a side note, my son who's 9? Listened tonight (it's a Daddy Weekend) and I was watching the windoze media visualizer as the song played, we both had phones on.

When it finished, I looked over and he was sitting there crying his eyes out! I pulled the phones of and said what is it son? Are you OK? And he looked at me, red face, big tears coming down and said "it's just so sad!"

This is a really nice song.  Not much to crit.  Nice lyrics and a very nice performance.  The violins seemed a little strong to me, but a very nice tune.  Well done guys, nice guitar work too.  More dobro would be good.

He had a "you know who" (hope and change) 2012 bumper sticker on his shopping cart/buggy with his belongings in it. He was definitely part of the 99%? Because he was giving off more scents than you could imagine? Perhaps even more than 99? I'm actually going to work on some more of that funny lap slide guitar for Mister Markno. But with the boy this weekend, it may not be until next week. We'll see, maybe I can sit him at some muted games for an hour or so.

First off this is one great tune you wrote, Robby, and the performances are outstanding.  I won't make 'mix' comments 'cause you already heard from one of the best set of ears out there in the person of Mr Yoyo.

Funny that James mentioned Tiny Dancer, because I was hearing a bit of Dobbie Gray's "Give me the beat boys and free my soul..." (sorry, blanking on the title) in more or less the same spot.

No matter, it's a great tune, well performed, and... yeah, I could hear this as a hit in the modern country ballad genre with a name artist.  So, tweak 'er up and get legging that puppy around.
