Softube Console 1 integration

Just felt the need to leave a big thank you here for Cakewalk and Softube to allow the Console 1 to control the DAW and vice versa.
In combination with the motorized Fader from the Faderport htis is truly an amazing combination.
Just created a little Video so you can see how Faderort and Console 1 work together to control the DAW. Because you can now select the tracks in your DAW with the Console 1 and because they BOTH can control the Daw FADER and panning every change you make with one device gets mirrored through the DAW to the other device.
Effectively, this now allows me to use the Long Fader in the Faderport while completely turning of the screen and mix with my eyes only.
Thank you Cakewalk!!! This is just too much fun. For anyone on owning Console 1 and Sonar: I truly would urge ou to at least demo this with a Faderport.

Here is the Video.

I didn't watch the video, but based on its subject matter, it might be worthy of a YouTube upload.

Anyhow, all this positive talk about Console 1 is making me consider it for use with my DAW.

This looks attractive, maybe a hardware solution that finally "works".  If one was starting out fresh, it looks like a good way to go.

FWIW, Softube have posted their update to work with the Console 1 support SONAR added in 2016.10.

Any bad news? Depends on your perspective.

Softube have switched to Goobler for installs and updates, so you need to set up an account and install their app.

    Let's see, I've now got:

    Cakewalk Command Center
    Goobler
    iLok License Manager
    Native Access
    Toontrack Product Manager
    XLN Online Installer
    Waves Central

    What next? Sheesh.

While Softube requires you to create an account on Gobbler, the installers are available from your new account on their website https://www.softube.com/index.php?id=mydownloads and may be downloaded directly from there.

    Hi Guys,

I'm also really pleased with the console 1 integration.  Having used console 1 for about a year I'd agree it's generally a controller solution that 'just works', and the new integration brings the workflow to a new level.

Having said that, I am finding the new sonar implementation a little flakey - first time I've had the connection between console 1 and sonar dropping out.  Hopefully this will be smoothed out soon.

Watching the above video, the fader/pan movement in Sonar doesn't seem very precision oriented. Don't know if that's just the video or what?
    Why no Fader?

Are all/any of the controls touch sensitive? And, I see that the DAW follows the movements of Console 1, but, does Console 1 follow the DAW?

    Thanks

from what I can discern the console has been discontinued

BUT supposedly, a MKII version is around the corner at a lower price,  it was showing up in a major retailers catalog but not on their website

Re: Softube Console 1 integrati 2017/08/22 09:41:22 (permalink)
    hello from alaska!

i'm having issues with sonar / console 1 integration and was wondering if any one could help out?

i just bought console 1 mkII  and received it in the mail today (8-22-2017). i also bought sonar professional yesterday because it's advertised to have complete daw integration with console 1, such as track naming, track numbering, and that the volume, pan, solo, and mute controls will control sonars pan, solo, mute, and volume for the selected channel.

i have installed softube and sonar and none of the integration is working for me.

to be specific, here's what i am doing and what I am experiencing.

    1. I have console 1 (mkII, brand new) connected to my computer via the supplied usb cable and is plugged into a usb 2.0 port. my computer is running windows 7 pro, with a quad core 2.8ghz i7 processor and 16gb ram.

    2. I have installed the console 1 software on my computer using the gobbler app and i have registered it with softube by linking my ilok account to my softube/gobbler account.

    3. i have installed cakewalk sonar professional version 23.7.0 build 37. i downloaded this from the sonar website yesterday and it is the most current version (i actually installed sonar before I installed the console 1 software)

    4. i open up sonar and on track 1 inserted the console 1 plug in on track 1's fx insert.

    5. there is a message at the bottem of the console plug in when it opens that says: "the daw does not support automatic track name and numbers". according to the literature this should not be happening, i think.

    6. i put the plug in in solo safe mode. i turn the volume knob. it does not affect the tracks fader, but it does turn up / down the volume knob in the console 1 software plug in that is inserted in track . same thing happens with solo, mute, pan. they turn the knobs in the console 1 plug in but not in the daw. according to the users manual they should automatically be linked to track 1's fader, mute, pan, and solo, but they do not affect them at all, they only change the ones in the plug in itself
    .
    7. i take the plug in out of solo safe mode. it doesn't fix the problem.

it seems like only a vst2 version of console 1 can be loaded in sonar? i don't know if this matters?

i don't see any thing in the users manual other then that these functions should automatically be working by default. i'm hoping there is some setting in cakewalk or in the console 1software that i'm missing, but i can't find it. i do see that i should be able to disable (they are supposed to be enabled by default) some of these features that are not working, according to the manual, by going into the settings of the plug in in the daw, but when i go into the console 1's plug in settings none of these options are available. i'm am talking about the vst2 insert console 1 settings, not the console 1's large gui that is outside of the daw.

any ideas? anyone else have this problem with the newest version of sonar professional?

    thanks!

Re: Softube Console 1 integrati 2017/08/22 09:55:34 (permalink)
ok, i'm going to answer my own question because it appears i fixed my issue and i now have full integration.

i did two things and i don't know if one or both fixed it?

    1. i went into cakewalk plug-in manager and went to the vst3 plugins, high lighted "console 1"  and clicked on "add plug in". then i saved that as a plug in layout file.

    2. I went back into cake walk and tried to add console 1 to an existing track (one that opened up with the 16 audio tracks template). i still didn't have integration, so i deleted all audio tracks from the template and added a new one. then i added console 1 as an insert fx on this track. it added as a vst3 this time and now i have full integration.

not sure if both or either fixed it but i suspect it had to do with the fact that it was loading the vst2 version of console 1 before and now for some reason it is automatically loading the vst 3 version.

i hope this is helpful to someone. just so you know, it seems to fully integrate as advertised, and is awesome, but for me it wasn't plug and play.

    one more thing to add.

after i figured this out i received an email back from softube. that means they responded to my message in 10 minutes. i'm impressed.

    here's what they said.

    Hi Steven,

This is Mattias from Softube support. Sorry to hear about your issue!

I think you have pin pointed the root of the issue yourself. The integration needs VST3.

Can you check your VST3 folder to see if the VST3 Console 1 has installed correctly?

    Best regards,
    Mattias

Re: Softube Console 1 integrati 2017/08/22 12:36:10 (permalink)
    heya ken!

i'm happy to be on this forum now! i've used logic, protools, tracktion, studio one, and reaper, and have been on reaper for the past few years. i pretty much treat a daw like a tape machine. after a few hours with sonar i can do most everything i need which is the fastest daw learning curve for me so far. i was also able to integrate and get my presonus faderport, audient id22 and softube console 1 all up and running and integrated in that two hours. i've never had that turn around time with the other daws, although i really do dig reaper.

i have used console 1 for an hour or so now and as far as i can tell i've figured out everything about the unit (i did read the manual), it's fully integrated, and it's awesome. after my initial confusion with it i find it's just as easy and fun to use as the video's make it look.

although i'm versed in the daw world, i'm actually quite a computer recording hater...mostly because i use computers for my non-music gig and it's enough computers for one day :) so, = for the past 5 years or so i've gotten into recording to tape. i rebuild old tascam 388 machines that i've found around the usa and they are alot of fun to record with. i love not staring at a screen when i record. the main problem with the tascam is it's a huge beast and it's difficult for me to deal with using the machine while sitting in front of a couple of microphones with a guitar in my hand. also the lack of eq precision / and having to print compression to tape is also ok but doesn't allow me to shape the sound as much as i'd like after i'm no longer trapped behind mics and guitars as the performer.

but this console 1 thing has me rethinking things... if i can find a simple transport that also shows the playback time then i can shut off the screen when i'm recording. yes!

if this works, i probably will still use the tascam 388 reel to reel, but now it will be acting as my mix down summing plug in :)

i plan to record, eq, compress and mix in sonar with console 1 (which gives me the tactile feel of these sweet old channel strips) and then i'll dump everything out in 8 stems to tape, using the channel inserts of the 388's mixing board so i can sum analog.

i'm wondering if i'll find i no longer need the tape machine or analog summing at all? i'm guessing that won't be the case and i'll still enjoy using it a bit, especially with daw processed tracks that can push the tape inputs to it's limits with out overloading the machine. the 388 is finicky as it's a 1/4" tape machine that doesn't do the tape saturation thing like a larger format tape machine, but if you get the levels consistently in the sweet spot it sounds surprisingly soft and lovely on the ears. perfect for acoustic music with daniel lanios-ish soundscaperly electric guitar accompaniment. i'll create a separate thread if i have permission to post results of such daw / mid-fi tape machine collaborations.

The VST3 console 1 plugin with SPLAT is amazing.  It imports track names, controls faders, pans,  solos, mutes... plus you get both the SSL 4000 channel strip and whatever UAD plugins you have that UA/ST have worked into Console 1.  It makes setting eqs and gates so much easier.  And it has an unlimited track count capability.

From what I understand Cakewalk and Presonus both worked (separately of course) to get the unit to seamlessly integrate into the respective DAWs.  I got one right after Sweetwater began stocking the new model and I cannot imagine working without it.

Cake and Softube did a righteous job!

BTW- the only dropout issues I ever have is if i swing around in my chair quickly and whack the Console 1 with a guitar headstock hard enough to disconnect it.  I am more worried about my guitars. The console 1 is built like a tank.
