Software Authorization

I think it's time to build a new system.  I currently use a Sonar 8.5, Windows XP, AMD 3400+ system.  I want to upgrade to Sonar X1 and think my current set up may need upgrading.

My question is, for all the software that I had to enter a code, then send a code, then receive a code, then input a code, yada, yada, yada . . . If I ghost my hard drive to use in the new system, am I going to have to do that all over again?  I have many toys that I've bought over the years.  I believe two of the companies are not even in business anymore.  Will that software only work with my current processor?

Probably because your system id will change.
That happened to me when I changed my boot drive.

Yeah... probably. Most companies will work with you to get you back up and running. It's a minor inconvenience

well ghosting the drive is no good if your gonna change cpu etc also.

and well some things with newer cpu's won't work.. or they want an upgrade.. tricky to say since you don't say specifically what things.

I did have an issue when superwave vanished.. but then they returned 4 years later

The only time I got away with upgrading my hard drive(capacity) without setting off any alarms is when I switched to an HDD of the same brand and speed. I went from one Seagate Momentus and cloned it to another of higher capacity. Worth considering if all one wants to do is just increase storage capacity without hassle.

If you radically change your system's architecture (say by moving to a new i7 based machine), you want to do a clean OS install.  Otherwise, you're almost begging for stability/performance problems.  Keep in mind that your machine ID will change (regardless of whether you perform a clean OS install), so you'll have to get new response/unlock codes for all your challange/response protected software.

    Thanks everyone!

Yoropal, I think I might do that.  The system I have now was a barebones system I purchased on Ebay.  I considered building an overclocked, i7 920 system, but I don't know that I have the experience, time or money to risk it or if it's even worth it.

Anubis, will I have authorization problems even if just ghosting and replacing my hard drive if everything else is the same?

    Thanks again.

You might not. IF you stick to the same brand and type. I went from a Seagate Momentus 360 to a 500. Both being 7200 rpm, with no issue. I can't guarantee it, but it worked for me.

Also depends on the individual application/plugin
ie:  With Yellow Tools Independence Pro, if I connect/disconnect an external HD, it resets my machine ID (which invalidates my unlock code).  This is an extreme example... and it's a PITA.

Create and store roles and the use of computer services at UCSB with a feature server for the status of individuals maintain a complicated task. These products generally support single sign on and digital identity features as built-in automatic reference.
