Software for backing up a Cell Phone address book?

My current cell phone is nearing it's end.

I always feel like my address book is at risk when the phone gets old.

The guys at the store say that the address data transfer applications cost lots and lots of money.

I don't believe em... does anyone know if you can get a small app to backup your phone to your personal computer?

thanks,
mike

mike - the cell phone drones at the store should have told you that it's much simpler than that if your phone still works.  all you have to do is copy each of your numbers onto the SIM card.  once their copied onto the SIM card, then you just use your SIM card in the new phone and all of your numbers are on the card to use.

personal pet peeve about this:  why do the phones have a separate memory for the contact list as well as the SIM card?  why don't they just automatically store to the SIM card instead of to the phone memory and then you have to manually transfer to the SIM card?

    Thanks Beagle,

I wonder if my old fashioned phone even has a Sim card?

I have heard of them and they are sort of infamous in my mind... but I don't really know what they are.

I usually ask for the least featured phone they sell... so I may not have a sim card.

    Or maybe I do?

    Thanks for the info!

    best regards,
    mike

hey mike - it would depend on when you got your phone.  SIM cards have been in use for all phones for quite a while now.  my phone is about 5 or 6 years old and it has one.

what make and model is it?

you can probably figure it out by going into your contacts menu and see if there's an option to SAVE TO SIM or something similar.

I have backup software for my phone... I imagine it didn't cost too much or we wouldn't have bought it.  It works so slick even I can use it!  :-)

I also backed up stuff from my Blackberry I got last year but I can only recover it onto another Blackberry.  :-(  (or, they can do it in the AT&T store for me...onto another Blackberry.   (Actually when I had my first Razr phone they transferred all my files to my new phone.

So...I imagine it depends on your phone....but it's certainly possible and doesn't cost a lot.

If you have a SIM card, and you're worried about the phone dying, make sure you copy the contacts to the SIM now.

Sometimes even if you have a SIM card, it won't have enough memory if you have lots of contacts (my GF just replaced her phone and had this problem). So if you have hundreds of contacts, you might have to go through them one by one to decide which ones to copy. But if the old phone still works, and you replace it, you should be able to see the contacts on it, even if you can't use it as a phone anymore.

Modern phones might have microSD memory cards or connect to a computer via USB with (free) software to do this (and more).

There's also a way to sync your phone with your Outlook contacts...if you use Outlook.

not necessarily for the older phones.  mine has a SIM card, but I can't sync it with outlook.

Another way to look at this is that it could be a great opportunity to lose some contacts.  I get rid of more extraneous people like this...

Well, no, I'm not younger than you.  But you need to keep up.

It really helps if your cellphone breaks every year of so. Then you can't help but keep up-to-date.  AND lose some of those pesky contacts (and to-do lists!).

so about every year I should drop my cell phone in my iced tea?  or spill rubbing alcohol on it?

    Now you're getting the idea!

Or just use it so much that the buttons wear out and you can't see the screen anymore.  Of course, if you continue getting older, the screen gets harder and harder to see anyway.

There are lots of ways to get to upgrade periodically.  Just don't tell Mrs. Beagle that it's intentional, of course.

Every town of any size has a cell phone store (not one run by the big service providers) that has a hacker on staff or retainer who will do what you want for a reasonable charge. Many of them offer this as a free service if you buy your plan/phone through them.
