Software/Hardware Upgrade Sequence - Help

Sorry, if there is a similar thread and feel free to redirect me but . . .

I have an Intel DP35DP, Core 2 Duo E6850, & 4Gb ram running Win XP 3.  I've chosen a cheaper & shorter-step upgrade path and have a Quad Core q9550 (MB not i5/i7 comp), 8Gb ram (max for MB), and Win 7 (32/64) ready to install. Although it is a Win7 "upgrade" version, I've read that I can do either an upgrade or clean install.

I have 3 drives so OS & other programs are separate from project/data/samples.  I also have a removable hard drive bay.

So . . .
1. (my first inclination) install the processor & RAM first in current setup -> load Win7 on new drive in the removable to iron things out and load programs -> swap out OS drives?

2. load Win7 on new drive -> swap out OS drives -> install processor & RAM?

3. clone my current drive to the new drive as a backup and upgrade current drive in place.

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

I'm not overly concerned about non 64bit plugs as I use mostly what comes with my software which includes:  Sonar 8.5.3, Toontracks EZD & SD, Komplete 6, WaveLab, Ozone 4 & RX2, Melodyne, & Sibelius

You should go with Option 1.

Install the processor & RAM first in current setup -> load Win7 on new drive in the removable to iron things out and load programs -> swap out OS drives

Option 3 isn't possible because you can't actually upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows XP -- you must do a clean install.

Option 2 is similar to Option 1, but the install of Windows 7 should go faster with a faster CPU and more RAM.

If any of your non 64-bit plugins have issues, check out jBridge.

Thanks for the affirmation Fred - the Win7 version I bought is actually an upgrade version for XP/Vista so I'm assuming it is going to look for an install prior to installing.  I appreciate your advice.

All went well with the install (Opt 1).

However, it looks as though the Q9550 is running hotter (26C) than the Duo - is this normal?

26C??? Not even warm! Most new processors are good for 80+ (under full load). :]

I say that's fine. Two more cores making heat (quad vs dual).

Use Google and search for "overclocking + <your processor>".
I'm not suggesting you overclock - it's just those overclocker's *love* their temps.
They'll quote you off by heart the normal / safe / extreme temps.

That's what I was wonderin'.  Saw another thread and someone mentioned up around 32C as their norm.  I think it is just where the threshold is set for the system monitor.  Thanks nOrd.

The fan issue, bios has potential. In some systems, to assist in the bios had a problem like this. Look at a variety of public, but none of them, the fans update fixes listed in 1525 touched anything, bios. Update fails it is actually very, bios the only option is damaged is to replace the motherboard, bios you need to be updated, so you should only run them important in bios.
