Soloing Mutes Track + Track Meter Panning Weirdness
OK. So this is weird, I think. Maybe this is something folks are familiar with but I hadn't noticed this before. I have 2 recorded audio tracks (24/44.1) in a project, nothing else. The 2 tracks are 2 different mics on the same acoustic guitar, same performance. No Fx. Been trying to make my mind up about which mic to use for this, maybe both. So, did a scratch take with each mic going to a different track. On playback, I'm wanting to A/B the 2 tracks to help me with my opinion about the mics. Track 1 panned 100% L, track 2 panned 100% R. First, the panning weirdness. On track 2, which is panned hard right, the track level meter shows level only on the right side of the meter (makes sense to me). On track 1, which is panned hard left, the track meter shows equal level on both left and right sides of the meter (doesn't make sense to me). Now the soloing/muting weirdness. If I start out and solo track 1 only, then unsolo, and so forth, I hear alternately the pair of mics and then just the track 1 mic solo in the left channel. Next, I solo track 2 with results as you would expect in the right channel. Then when I unsolo track 2, track 1 audio never reappears. Track 1 meter shows no audio level. I can solo/unsolo track 2 repeatedly with no change; track 1 audio is seemingly absent. Take that scenario just described and start with soloing track 2 instead, track 2 audio never reappears after soloing track 1, so, same symptoms only flip-flopped. All this soloing is going on with playback continuously enabled. This problem of disappearing track audio solves itself if I stop playback and then hit play. The inconsistency in panning indication on the track meters never resolves. Any ideas? Is this a sleep deprivation thing?

Any ideas? Is this a sleep deprivation thing? LOL possibly. A few thoughts come to mind, though they could be way off-base as well: 1- did you do the soloing by CTRL clicking perhaps? IOW, did you somehow create a quick group or a "mutually exclusive" solo situation? 2- Are you bussing any of the tracks? 3- When you unsolo the one track, does its SOLO light go off? I'm just trying to jog your thinking a little to see if it was deprivation ;) I have seen situations where soloing/unsoloing has, in fact, not worked right. But I don't think I've seen that lately - and I'm using 8.5.2. (PS - what version and OS are you running?) As for the panning - did you by chance change the interleave on any of those two tracks? It sounds like the one that should be 100% left is set to "mono" interleave.

No bussing; routing track outputs directly to ADAT channel ports on an RME PCI card. Soloing/unsoloing causes the solo light to go on and off as expected. Version and OS are - CWSP 8.5.0.141 and XP Pro SP3 32 bit. Neither track is interleaved. I really liked this idea a lot but alas, no... Thanks for the feedback!

Can you re-create the problem in a fresh project? Or is it only this one?

John Please dl the 8.5.2 patch. John, I'm a bit skittish about 8.5.2 and some other issues (e.g., AudioSnap) I've been reading about. I've been trying to hold off until 8.5 is more substantially brought into conformance with its intended capabilities. Perhaps I'll load 8.5.2 to experiment with this issue, so long as I can fall back to 8.5.0. Thanks.

Billy, I'm liking the fresh project experiment, though this is as simple a recording session as I can imagine. I think I'll try the sleep thing first, then give it fresh start. Many thanks.

Well, Bit, as I like to say to my friends: "Hmm. Sleep is goot" ;) (Ya gotta put a little funny accent in that) lol. I still think you should try 8.5.2 anyway. It's got some stuff fixed from 8.5.0 at least.

John Please dl the 8.5.2 patch. John, I'm not saying I won't give 8.5.2 a try (I will), but there's nothing in Cakewalk's 8.5.2 fix list that describes this particular problem and its resolution - http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1882622 The list does mention a few other fixed issues related to soloing. We'll see...

Fresh project, 8.5.0, same setup - 2 mics, each to its own track - soloing weirdness persists, level metering weirdness persists. Noticed something new - track 1, which is showing audio level left and right for material panned hard left (unlike track 2 which is showing audio level right only for material panned hard right), is unresponsive to fader changes in the track inspector, where track 2 responds to fader changes as expected. Off now to set a restore point and load 8.5.2...

I wonder if you have some sort of corruption in a file or the registry :(

Things are working exactly as expected. Thanks John and Billy for the suggestions and thanks for nudging me off of 8.5.0.
