[Solved] 60cycle Hum with BRAND NEW X3 install

I mistakenly posted this originally as a reply in the old thread, as I wanted to make it a new topic.

Hello all! Since all 60cycle hum reports and *certain fixes* seem to be related to *upgrades* I am chagrined to report that I am experiencing the hum with a BRAND NEW INSTALL, not an upgrade. I've used Sonar since V3 and am upgrading from 8, and have built three previous DAWs. Other than crashes at the most inopportune time I have never had an issue such as this. I hope I'm not missing something elementary.

I've been tracking the forum recently and noticed this thread, because I've been preparing for an upgrade to a new super-fabulous  StudioCat DAW (Pro Tower) and X3. (What a machine - thanks, Jim!) So last night I installed my Profire 610 interface, then X3, X3b, and then X3c. Fired up Sonar, dinked around trying to make sense of this new environment, loaded a project and immediately got the hum. Came to the forum for further research and first read about the VST scan for true upgraders and figured that didn't apply to a brand new install. Then I read about the 64 bit precision engine button *fix*. Remembering that I had engaged the button while dinking around after the install, I then disengaged it after reading the thread. Closed Sonar and reopened the project - still hum. I rebooted, fired up X3, and upon loading my project was immediately greeted with the hum again. And, let me be clear - the hum only appears after loading a project, and ends when closing a project, so I don't *think* there is any interference from another device.

BRAND NEW INSTALL. Any thoughts, my brothers? I appreciate any feedback - this is actually kind of nuts... TIA!

There is no such thing as an upgrade vs new installation of Sonar. Upgrade only applies to the price you pay on the basis of ownership of previous Sonar/Cakewalk software.

Each installation of a new Sonar version is a full and separate installation not dependent on any existing installed software. Any existing shared files amount to plugins etc and are overwritten by the most recent installer.

So no matter how you come to own Sonar each installation is a full new installation.

ok...thanks for clearing that up, I got it. Actually, that just makes the issue a bit more intriguing to me. I do appreciate your clarification.

Perhaps I should have initially said it was an install on a brand new box. Regardless, the crux of the matter is that, at least for me, disengaging the 64-bit Precision thing does not *appear* to be the workaround for me, although it seems to be a workaround for a good number of folks. That is intriguing to me - the *fix* apparently doesn't work with a brand new Win 7 OS on a brand new custom built, dedicated DAW. Does that make sense to you?

I've used Sonar since V3 and stopped at V8.2 or something. I've built (2) SONAR DAW's previously without any "noise" issues such as this hum. I've just spent a pretty good hunk of change on upgrading my modest studio and the *last thing* I expected was an annoying hum on my unsoiled "dream" DAW. If the problem requires a SONAR fix I have faith it will be dealt with swiftly. I'm just trying to make sure it's nothing on my end first.

I don't have the issue at all. Not on my win 7 laptop nor my win 8.1 studio daw . I'm on x3c. I don't know what to suggest. Sorry.

I must give a shout out to the resources provided by the folks on this forum. As it turns out, the "buzz" that I was hearing AFTER disabling the 64bit Precision Engine and Multiprocessing Engine resulted from a default Firewire Driver. Referencing info on the forum I learned the Legacy Driver was a better choice - WALLAH - that buzz was gone. Unfortunately the CE and MP engine noises remain, but I'm sure they're working on it.

Otherwise enjoying upgrading to a StudioCat ProTower and X3. Learning curve from V8 is a bit daunting...
