[Solved] Cales midiFx
Hey all, I'm trying to get Cales to work. It's a midi plugin that simplifies key scales for non keyboard players like myself. The web page is here: http://codefn42.com/cales/ It's a great concept but I can't get it to work. Cakewalk scans it as an audio plugin, not a midi plugin and I can't seem to get it to work. What am I missing? Directions seem pretty straightforward. Anyone use this?

That is because it is a VST plug-ins and not an MFX. It is possible to use it but before messing with a third party VST plug-in to perform MIDI key mapping try using the Transpose MFX bundled with SONAR. It can do quite a bit in they way of key mapping and is an MFX plug-in.

Ya I looked at that but it's not quite like Cales.

I got it so I can see the Cales keys activating but I just can't seem to get the output to trigger my synth...

1. When inserting, check that "Enable MIDI Output" is checked 2. Set Synth MIDI track Input to Cales output, enable permanent echo on this track 3. focus Cales MIDI track and play (I have just checked that it works, removed it after... my own MIDI plug-in with which I manipulate MIDI is 20 times smaller and does not require "super" routing. But I have to "program" scales myself )

Did you enable MIDI output on the plug-in? mmarton Ya I looked at that but it's not quite like Cales.
Yes, aside from not providing a keyboard graphic there are more options in Transpose, including many more scales and the plug-in does not require an extra track to host it either.

azslow3 3. focus Cales MIDI track and play
Focus is not necessary, input echo is though.

When I use "looped" MIDI ( Omni->MIDI VST->MIDI Track->VST ...), I have crashed Sonar many times enabling permanent input echo on wrong track (or at wrong time, forgetting to switch Input from global Omni). That is why I advise to use automatic echo and use focus expect when absolutely necessary.

Still focus is not important, echo is. Focus does not insure echo. It requires "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" and while this is the default not everyone has it enabled. Having focus enable echo can mess with input settings. I have never crashed SONAR as a result of MIDI input settings although LoopBe will complain if I set up a loop. I can deal with that. I never use global omni either.

Thanks!!! Got it going. I'm sure transpose is more detailed but this is perfect for what I need.

Good point. I have not changed that option for long time and forgot about it.. Having focus enable echo can mess with input settings. I have never crashed SONAR as a result of MIDI input settings although LoopBe will complain if I set up a loop. I can deal with that. I never use global omni either.
With external looping I also had no crashes. But when I used MIDI output from VSTi, many things went wrong periodically. In some situations Sonar "forget" the Input assignment, reverting it to global omni. When that happens, Sonar not indicating it visually (Input is still names correctly, till project reload). May be that was my setup specific, but I had it with several different VSTi, including my own. Since then I prefer to avoid MIDI VST and that was the reason to write Lua MFX...

When "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" is enabled and MIDI input is set to None, giving the MIDI track focus causes SONAR to set the input to global omni. This is one reason I turn "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" off.
