Solved: Can't find z3ta+, any idea where it went?

I have never played with z3ta+ and decided to take a look at it today. But surprisingly, it does not appear on the plugin list.

If I pull up the Plugin Manager, it's listed under "Legacy Wrapped VST Audio Effects" and "Legacy Wrapped VST Instruments". Should it also appear under "VST Instruments"?

I have verified that the DLLs are present in c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\z3ta+. There is also a c:\program files\cakewalk\z3ta+ directory that contains wavetables, documentation and stuff.

z3ta+.dll, z3ta+_fx.dll and z3ta+_fx2.dll are all present (version 1.5.4). They are not ActiveX, so I assume they're normal VSTs and require no registration or voodoo sacrifices to make them work.

Maybe somebody would be kind enough to check and see if there is another folder or file I'm missing?

    Maybe it has failed to load once and Sonar quarantined it? Have it rescan all plugins, including those that didn't load correctly or at all. I can't think of anything else right now. Anyhow, you're not really missing much...

    Your installations sound good to me
    1) a program directory tree with Arpeggios, Documentatoin, Resources, Tunings and Wavetables directories, uninstall stuff, the standalone exe and dll.
    2) the VST dlls amd standalone exe in the VST plugings directory

    Hi Bit - For me, it's C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\z3ta+\z3ta+.dll
    Everything else is in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\z3ta+

    But no EXE file.

    z3ta+.exe
    FYI, I did not install the z3ta+ that came with SONAR. I bought it quite a while ago.

    My opinion of ZETA3 is contrary to PaPi. I'm not into electronic industrial type sounds at all..(which is what ZETA excels at ) Aside from the fact that most of the presets are geared way too loud- The underlying synth engine is fantastic. You will find a few mellow sounding presets and some goofy appregiated stuff that sounds absolutely killer. It's a very deep synth to program and there isn't much you can't create if you have a mind and desire to program.

    Ah, OK, makes sense that you might not get the standalone executable when bundled.

    Thanks everyone for taking a look for me. I guess I've got everything that's supposed to be there. Time to consider the possibility that I've overlooked something obvious and/or trivial...

    ...you might not get the standalone executable when bundled.

    But sometimes you can create one yourself. If you have Rapture (including its microhost), then the following workaround method might work:

    Create a folder somewhere away from any VST plug-ins folders.
    Copy the Rapture.exe file into this folder.
    Copy the z3ta+.dll file into the same folder.
    Re-name the z3ta+.dll file to Rapture.dll.
    Create a shortcut (in your start menu or desktop) to the Rapture.exe file (and rename it to "z3ta+ Standalone" or similar).

    Running the shortcut launches z3ta+ as a standalone. Hopefully anyway! I have not tried this method for z3ta+, but it worked for DimPro (although it turned out that a DimPro standalone was available after all so I need not have bothered contriving one).

    I'm not sure whether it came up, bitflipper, but z3eta+ is not only a VST(i) instrument but a VST fx plugin as well. It takes audio as an input for processing so there are separate dll's for that as they are obviously different 'programs'.

    z3ta+.dll, z3ta+_fx.dll and z3ta+_fx2.dll are in their own folder in Cakewalk's Vstplugins folder

    There's also a z3ta+ resources folder in the main Cakewalk folder

    z3ta+_fx and z3ta+_fx2 appear in the VST Audio Effects (VST) list in the plug-in manager
    z3ta+ appears in the VST Instruments (VSTi) list in the plug-in manager

    z3ta+_fx and z3ta+_fx2 appear in the Legacy Wrapped VST Audio Effects (VST) list in the plug-in manager

    I couldn't find z3ta+ either, but I did find Waldo!

    EDIT:

    I think z3ta+ is one of the cooler sounding soft synths. However, this is coming from someone who doesn't use soft synths very often.

    RE: Can't find z3ta+, any idea where it went? 2009/06/29 11:34:14 (permalink)
    z3eta+ is not only a VST(i) instrument but a VST fx plugin as well

    That was actually my motivation for having a look at z3ta, after reading a post by Texrat describing how he used z3ta as an effect. On the master bus of all things. It piqued my curiosity.

    I'm not a big soft synth guy either, preferring natural-sounding instruments and emulations of classic synthesizers. But you never know when you'll stumble onto a new and useful addition to your sonic palette, so I'm always trying out goofy synths and assorted sound manglers. The sheer breadth of opinions on z3ta alone make it worth investigation.

    Unfortunately, z3ta remains inaccessible. When I scan plugins with the Plugin Manager, I see z3ta+ flash in the little progress window, so SONAR appears to be finding and initializing it.

    So I've now shifted my attention to the registry. z3ta's all over the place in there, but I did find an anomaly. Perhaps someone would be so kind as to look and see if this is how it's supposed to be? Or better still, export the contents of their own three z3ta+ keys and post them?

    Under HKCU\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\Cakewalk VST\Inventory there is a key for each VST, including z3ta+. However, while the other keys contain 37 values, the z3ta entry contains only 2: "isVst" (value zero) and "touch" (value 1). It would appear that a great deal of information is missing.

    Here are the values for Kontakt3 for example:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\Cakewalk VST\Inventory\c:/program files/cakewalk/vstplugins/Kontakt/Kontakt 3.dll]
    "clsidPlug"="{141AC902-4E69-4B33-4B4F-4E54414B7E34}"
    "clsidProps"="{141AC903-4E69-4B33-4B4F-4E54414B7E34}"
    "FullName"="Kontakt 3"
    "FullPath"="c:\\program files\\cakewalk\\vstplugins\\Kontakt\\Kontakt 3.dll"
    "Vendor"="Native Instruments Software Synthesis GmbH"
    "DosName"="KONTAK~4"
    "PresetPath"=""
    "isBad"=dword:00000000
    "isSynth"=dword:00000001
    "isVst"=dword:00000001
    "isX64"=dword:00000000
    "numInputs"=dword:00000000
    "maxUsedInputs"=dword:00000000
    "numOutputs"=dword:00000020
    "numPrograms"=dword:00000001
    "numParams"=dword:00000200
    "progsChunks"=dword:00000001
    "registerAsPlug"=dword:00000001
    "registerAsSynth"=dword:00000001
    "uniqueId"=dword:4e694b33
    "wantEvents"=dword:00000001
    "cxEditor"=dword:00000000
    "cyEditor"=dword:00000000
    "forceStereo"=dword:00000001
    "nrpnPassThrough"=dword:00000000
    "delayCompensation"=dword:00000001
    "registerAsTempoBasedEffect"=dword:00000000
    "generateEvents"=dword:00000001
    "isShell"=dword:00000000
    "isShellRoot"=dword:00000000
    "forceSuspendOnStop"=dword:00000000
    "vstVersion"=dword:00000001
    "forceMono"=dword:00000001
    "translateProgramChanges"=dword:00000000
    "addVstPrefix"=dword:00000001
    "touch"=dword:00000001
    "modStats"=hex:00,e8,11,f7,74,7a,c8,01,60,46,8f,01

    Now here's the entry for z3ta+:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\Cakewalk VST\Inventory\c:/program files/cakewalk/vstplugins/z3ta+/z3ta+.dll]
    "isVst"=dword:00000000
    "touch"=dword:00000001

    The value of zero for isVst probably explains why z3ta's not listed in the context menu.

    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    If it helps any, mine matches scook where "isVst"=dword:00000001, not 0 as in your case.

    Thank you, Steve. I'm going to try importing your registry values and see what happens.

    (Maybe it all comes down to the "isBad" value. I wonder what it means when isBad = 1. Bad like Michael Jackson, or bad like Ashlee Simpson?)

    Glad I could be of assistance. BTW, if you want classic sounds for z3ta+ check out the Muz3um patches. http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.asp?m=1720034

    Thanks man!! Same thing happened here!! Any ideas as to why this isn't coming up in some installations? Complete wipe of machine and reinstall still didn't fix it!! Grr

    I have no idea why or how this happened. Something went awry during installation, but we have no way of knowing what. CW probably has a clue, though.

    I know that the SONAR installer must generate a log during installation, which is how installation problems are identified, but I've never been able to find said log file. Since you've recently reinstalled SONAR, you might poke around the \program files\Cakewalk and \documents and settings trees and look for files named "install.log", or something like that.

    Hi Bitflipper,

    I had a similar problem and did the registry edit myself with two programs that weren't showing up on the VST plugins list:

    Beatscape and z3ta+

    and Dimension Pro was reporting back to me that it wasn't properly installed. I found that despite the fact that I have adminstrative rights on my Windows XP computer, I had to log in as "Administrator" in order for these programs to install and work correctly (even with the registry hack for the z3ta+, I still had to run Sonar as an Administrator for the synth to play from the rack once it appeared!).

    I have now set up an administrator account and run all my Sonar related software there instead (even my project 5 installation was asking me to reinstall from the original CD!!)

    I don't know when my security permissions changed on my system (I'm the only one who uses it, so suspect some foul play from the internet!) but it caused the same symptoms as the ones you described for z3ta+.

    Hope this is of some help

    Hi all,

    I had a similar issue after upgrading to Windows 7 and Sonar 8.5. z3ta only appeared in the 64-bit version of Sonar. The registry entries for the 32-bit version had just two entries as show above by BitFlipper.

    I tried all of the solutions given above, but in the end re-installing just z3ta from the 8.0 DVD done the trick. The DLLs looked the same although they got installed to a different location.

    Cheers, John

    I've done the same using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, run all my apps from the Administrator account.
    Seems to have solved the "Permissions Issues" I was experiencing.

    BMOG, have you checked your VST directory locations under Edit->Preferences, and performed a complete re-scan?

    Well I feel silly I was launching X3 and not Platinum, there were all there in Platinum.  That is rust from not working in a while
