[Solved] Is there any way in X3 to copy midi notes by click and drag?
In X2, if I wanted to copy some midi notes I used to be able to lasso the notes to select them, and then Ctl-Click-Drag to copy. If I do that in X3 it erases the notes. I looked through the help files and did some google searches and didn't see anything on this. I've been using Ctl-C and then move the now time and then Ctl-V, but this is slower than the old way in some circumstances. Is there a new key combination for this in X3?

Try holding the CTRL key while you drag the lasso'd notes. That should copy them and leave the originals in their place.

You now have the smart tool that does things "differently" lets say! What I do now is I learned to switch the smart tool to the Select tool and then you can do exactly like you want to do. I know, when I first heard this, (as many others did also) I was like "Why?" Didn't make sense, then. Now that I have learned the new way and use it along with the other features of the smart tool, I can get -r -done fairly quick.

Yeah, I misread the OP's post. He already states that he tries CTRL click drag and it doesn't work. My bad. It does work though if the smart tool is selected. Grim is correct...once you get the hang of the use of the smart tools you'll love it.

But the OP's saying it worked fine in X2, and X2 already had the Smart Tool, which I don't think has changed in X3.

You have to right-click to lasso now.

Thanks guys. When I switch to the Select tool it doesn't allow me to Ctl-Click-Drag to copy. Nor does the Select tool allow right click lasso. I looked in the documentation again and there doesn't seem to be any way to Ctl-Click-Drag to copy with the Smart tool or the Select tool. It's like they got rid of this functionality altogether. Too bad - this will slow me down.

IDK, I ust be missing something, it works the same in X2 and X3. Using the Smart Tool, Right-click to lasso and Ctrl+click drag will copy or move notes depending on which button is released first. If the Ctrl key is released first, the notes are moved. If the left-mouse button is released first the notes are copied. The Select Tool uses left click to lasso although I prefer to use the Smart Tool and right-click for lasso.

Scook is right in that if you switch to the select tool, it should operate with a left click to select. However, if this isn't happening, something is up with that.

I try never to shift out of the smart tool if possible. The thing to watch with it is where the cursor is (and what it looks like). If you are too close to MIDI notes, the right click is the "erase" tool, so is more getting a feel for how the smart tool is functioning.

If one thing screws you up it simple changes like this. I'm JUST getting the hang of the dang thing. Problem is I'm still working in 8.5 sometimes and revert without thinking. How long did the midi editing stay the same in Sonar?

I never get away from the smart tool, unless I need the mute tool. Learn how to use all the "tools" within the smart tool and you'll be an happy man.

Regardless the omission in the help file Cntrl LClick Drag works the same as it always did. Cntrl LClick drag on a note and it will be copied. Lasso select notes and Cntrl LClick Drag and the selected notes will be copied. You have to click in the 'C' range box of the midi note (the move symbol will show). Dan

It looks like that particular help topic is specifically focused on adjusting single MIDI notes.

x2 is the same as x3. watch in the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruAnAPR6-hQ use the smart tool in the piano roll view. right click lasso, hold CNTRL and drag. make sure its not a groove clip, just bounce to clips first.

Ok - thanks guys. It must be my computer. I recently went to the dark side and got a MacBookPro. I'm running Sonar in Bootcamp and there must be some weird stuff happening.

guitartrek Can someone point to me where in the documentation for Smart Tool or Select Tool how you are supposed to Copy via Click and Drag?
Page 136 of both the X2 and X3 Ref. Guides: Copying notes To copy notes: 1. Press and hold the CTRL key down while you click the desired note(s). 2. While still holding the CTRL key and the left mouse button, drag the note(s) to the desired location, then release the mouse button. The note(s) is copied.

BrundleFly - Thanks for pointing that out. I was able to figure out what is going on. If I use Sonar in Bootcamp everything works as expected. If I use Sonar in Fusion6 (VM) I'm getting this weird result where when trying to CTRL-Click the pointer turns into an eraser and erases the note. I prefer to use Fusion6 because you can run Windows and Mac OS at the same time. Bootcamp requires direct booting to Windows. However, I've got an SSD drive so booting is fairly quick.

Just an FYI - in the future, if you're using a non-standard configuration, that's probably worth mentioning in the initial post. Cakewalk does not officially support running Sonar on the Mac precisely for the kind of reason you encountered. That said I know plenty of people who run Sonar under Boot Camp and it works great for them. But I understand Cakewalk's reluctance to say they support it, because then people would start asking Mac-specific questions re: Sonar that customer service isn't really set up to answer.

Thanks Craig. I'll make sure to do that next time. And I'm sorry if I wasted people's time on this issue. I know Cakewalk doesn't officially support Mac, and like you, I know a lot of people that don't have any problems either. Just for the record - the problem isn't with Mac or Bootcamp - it is with Fusion6.
