[Solved] New problem with old Sonar x1. Do I need to upgrade?
Hi everyone. I'm new here, so I apologise for my lack of knowledge, and any other bads I am going to commit trying this forum thingy! I have been using Sonar x1 Producer happily for several years, and just last week it decides it won't export, import or open a project from the file menu. I have to get Task Manager to shut it down. I am in the middle of a project so I need a fix. The project is very simple - 3 softsynth tracks successfully bounced down to 1 audio. The project still opens from the quickstart menu, and I can work in it still, just not export it. My computer is Windows 7 64 bit. I updated Java around the same time as this problem occurred, so have uninstalled that update but am still having the problem. Is Sonar x1 just too old now? Any suggestions to the cause of the problem? How do I know if I upgrade Sonar that I won't have the same problem anyway to due a computer issue that I can't figure out, rather than anything else? Because the demo doesn't export I can't tell! I mostly use the True Pianos synth, which is only available on Platinum. If I upgrade to Sonar Artist can I just load that synth from X1? I appreciate any help and advice anyone can offer. Thankyou :)

Hi Midi and welcome to the forum. I do recommend upgrading but X1 is not too old. It should work. When you say you can't export, would you give a clear step by step procedure you follow. Its possible one step is causing the trouble. Also what is the result? What happens?

You could try a re-install Sometimes things just get screwed up and a reinstall fixes what got screwed up

Wow! Hello everyone and thankyou for your replies to date :) So.... When I have bounced my mix to audio, I select the audio track, click File>Export>Audio and it's game over. The menus grey out and I get no response from clicking on anything. There is no message. Track Manager tells me the program is waiting on a response from me (as it would be had the dialogue box shown up). I get this same problem with new tracks and th others I can load from the quickstart menu. I can't load old ones from File>Open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, installed X1C and X1D, checked the location of all my folders, I tried running the program in safe mode but I don't think I did it properly because nothing seemed any different. I have 248 GB free hard disk space and 6 GB Ram. I'm not sure when I ran Windows updates. I can check and do that. Thanks again all :)

Be sure you don't have a hidden window dialog behind the main window.

Well well. I previously couldn't check for a hiding dialogue box because the minimize button is also unresponsive - something I just remembered when I went to try it. But this time upon export attempt I also got a windows Fatal error message, an error message from Cakewalk Problem Report somebody (which I have never seen before EVER!) and then windows telling me that Sonar has stopped working and that it will check for a problem. None of these have ever appeared before. The Fatal error message included the following Module: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll and then something else with lots of zeros. Does that give anyone any clues?

You may have to reinstall. In fact that is what I would do.

Thanks John. I have already done that several times. I am thinking that I have some kind of computer problem rather than a Sonar problem. There seems to be other stuff going on as well now. Thanks for your help today :)

Try a virus scan. See if you picked up one. Then if that is not the case back your data for a reformat and a full reinstall of the OS. Only do that when you know you have all your important data backed up. This includes all email and all licenses. Don't forget the Windows key. Lets us know how you come out. I hope its a simple problem and you don't have to do the OS reinstall. That should be your last resort. Good luck!

MidiMoron ...I previously couldn't check for a hiding dialogue box because the minimize button is also unresponsive...
Minimize won't work on the main window until the dialog box is cleared (assuming that the dialog box is part of Sonar). To access the hidden dialog box, either right-click on the Sonar Taskbar icon or launch Task Manager. On the other hand, some of your description seems to suggest that your problem stems from something else other than a hidden dialog box. Still worth checking though.

I went to try the "right-click" option you mentioned Kev, but didn't get the opportunity. As soon as I hit export the program froze and all the error messages came up again. Then the program got shut down. My preious method after the program froze, before I started getting error messages, was to use Task Manager to shut it down. That was effective, but gave me clue to the problem. I have done a virus scan and didn't come up with anything. I am being told that my Firewall is turned off but it wont let me turn it on. I also cant seem to disconnect from the internet! I have a lot of learning to do.

If you are able, then you might need to get a qualified IT person to assist with you with this. From what I am reading in this thread, it appears that either your Windows installation itself is borked or you may even have a hardware issue. I think the ntdll.dll file is related the the nVidia drivers... so maybe updating these might be the answer - Of course, the version you will be able to upgrade to depends on the age of your graphics card. It could even be your video card on its way out. You might, also, want to check your system event viewer for a chronological list of issues. Again, You might want to get a qualified IT person to assist with you with this whole process.

I use X1. Virtual Instruments (VSTs) can make it all crazy. If you are only using True Piano, then I don't know.

For further reference for anyone else, I ended up reformatting the hard drive and doing a fresh installation of my Windows 7. Sonar is working like a charm again. Before I got to that point I installed Sonar onto a couple of different laptops. It worked ok, so my computer was definitely the problem. Thanks everyone for your advice.
